USA VS SPAIN 2nd Quarter JULY 24 2012

The USA-Spain exhibition is the first matchup between FIBA's No. 1 and 2 world powers since the two national teams squared off in 2010 in an exhibition game in Madrid, Spain. The USA, in preparation for the 2010 FIBA World Championship, pulled out a narrow 86-85 win in the friendly. In that last meeting, the 2010 USA National squad fought through adversity and fended off a second half attack to edge host and the defending world champion Spain team 86-85 on Aug. 22, 2010, inside the Magic Box in Madrid, Spain. Playing in a raucous stadium filled to its 10,960 capacity, the USA's charge was led by Kevin Durant, who posted game-highs of 25 points and 10 boards, and also had a pair of key blocks in the closing seconds. Also in double digits for the U.S. were Derrick Rose, 13 points; Lamar Odom, 12 points and nine boards; and Chauncey Billups, 10 points. The last official FIBA competition between the two squads came in the 2008 Olympic gold medal game. In a down-to-the wire game that has been described as one of the greatest international games ever played, the USA fought off the determined Spaniards 118-107 to earn gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Two years earlier, while the U.S. finished third at the 2006 FIBA World Championship after being stopped by Greece (101-95) in the semifinals, the Spaniards defeated Greece 70-47 in the gold medal game to claim the '06 World Championship title. Spain, currently ranked No. 2 in the world by FIBA, won the 2009 and 2011 EuroBasket titles, placed sixth in the 2010 FIBA World Championship, earned the silver medal in Beijing at the 2008 Olympic Games and won gold at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan. Since NBA players became eligible to participate in FIBA competitions, the USA has compiled a 5-1 win-loss record versus Spanish national teams in official FIBA competitions. USA Basketball National Teams comprised of NBA players are also 2-0 versus Spain in exhibition action. The USA nipped Spain 86-85 in a friendly in 2010 held in Madrid prior to the start of the 2010 FIBA World Championship and the USA defeated Spain 95-66 in the opening game of the Super Dream Games 2000 in Saitama, Japan. The USA team is scheduled to arrive in London for the 2012 Olympic Games on July 26, and open play July 29 versus France in a 2:30 p.m. (local London time) game. The San Angelo Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division is asking for the public's help in identifying and locating a man who robbed the Walgreens Drug Store located at 3328 Sherwood Way in San Angelo. On July 24, 2012, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a man came to the Pharmacy counter and handed a technician a note stating this was a robbery and demanding prescription drugs. The suspect then verbalized he had a handgun as he patted his waistline. After the technician gave the suspect the prescription drugs, he exited the store. The suspect is described as being a white male, wearing a dark baseball style hat with a "D" on the front, white T-shirt, blue jeans, and white athletic shoes. View from the roof of 1615 Poydras on July 22, 2012 (about 24 stories high). The structure is the Grand Palace Hotel @ Canal & Claiborne. The time was approximately 8am. Skip to 1:49 for the explosions and 1:54 the actual implosion. Obscene, hateful or other wise IMO inappropriate comments will be deleted. You can see three people on the roof of the building very close to the structure (right hand side of the picture right below the green I-10 direction sign. The 17-story hotel was imploded on Sunday July 22, 2012 @ approximately 8:02am. New Orleans' old Pallas Hotel on Canal Street, also known as the Grand Palace, was Imploded with a reported 400 tons of explosives. The city closed many streets and the elevated Interstate 10 passing next to the building before and after the demolition. The interstate was reopened Sunday morning after about 3 hours. The building was demolished to make green space for the new University Medical Center, a hospital being built to replace the old Charity Hospital, which was closed after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. The Grand Palace Hotel went by several names including the Pallas Hotel. The building, originally called Claiborne Towers as one of the first mid rise apartment complexes built after WW-2. It changed hands, names and uses several times since its 1950 opening. It was abandoned since approximately 2004. It was an apartment complex, a hotel and an assisted living facility at one time before being shuttered. Mayor Mitch Landrieu was quoted in the Times Picayunne as saying the event was "an important milestone" for the city and its plans to build a biomedical corridor. The demolition was originally scheduled for last 11/20/2011 and then rescheduled to 12/18/2011 date was scheduled but then postponed until July 22, 2012. (all rights reserved copyright 2012)

Jan Karski (24 April 1914 -- 13 July 2000) was a Polish World War II resistance movement fighter and later professor at Georgetown University. In 1942 and 1943 Karski reported to the Polish government in exile and the Western Allies on the situation in German-occupied Poland, especially the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto, and the secretive German-Nazi extermination camps. In November 1939, on a train to a POW camp in General Government (a part of Poland which had not been fully incorporated by Nazi Germany into The Third Reich), Karski managed to escape, and found his way to Warsaw. There he joined the ZWZ -- the first resistance movement in occupied Europe and a predecessor of the Home Army (AK). About that time he adopted a nom de guerre of Jan Karski, which later became his legal name. Other noms de guerre used by him during World War II included Piasecki, Kwaśniewski, Znamierowski, Kruszewski, Kucharski, and Witold. In January 1940 Karski began to organize courier missions with dispatches from the Polish underground to the Polish Government in Exile, then based in Paris. As a courier, Karski made several secret trips between France, Britain and Poland. During one such mission in July 1940 he was arrested by the Gestapo in the Tatra mountains in Slovakia. Severely tortured, he was finally transported to a hospital in Nowy Sącz, from where he was smuggled out. After a short period of rehabilitation, he returned to active service in the Information and Propaganda Bureau of the Headquarters of the Polish Home Army.[citation needed] In 1942 Karski was selected by Cyryl Ratajski, the Polish Government's Delegate at Home, to perform a secret mission to prime minister Władysław Sikorski in London. Karski was to contact Sikorski as well as various other Polish politicians and inform them about Nazi atrocities in occupied Poland. In order to gather evidence, Karski met Bund activist Leon Feiner and was twice smuggled by Jewish underground leaders into the Warsaw Ghetto for the purpose of showing him first hand what was happening to the Polish Jews. Also, disguised as a Ukrainian camp guard, he visited what he thought was Bełżec death camp. In actuality, it seems that Karski only got close enough to witness a Durchgangslager ("sorting and transit point") for Bełżec in the town of Izbica Lubelska, located midway between Lublin and Bełżec.[4] Many historians have accepted this theory, as did Karski himself.[5] From 1942 Karski reported to the Polish, British and U.S. governments on the situation in Poland, especially on the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto and the Holocaust of the Jews. He had also carried out of Poland a microfilm with further information from the underground movement on the extermination of European Jews in German-occupied Poland. The Polish Foreign Minister Count Edward Raczynski provided the Allies on this basis one of the earliest and most accurate accounts of the Holocaust. A note by Foreign Minister Edward Raczynski entitled The mass extermination of Jews in German occupied Poland, addressed to the governments of the United Nations on 10 December 1942, would later be published along with other documents in a widely distributed leaflet.[6] Karski met with Polish politicians in exile including the Prime Minister, as well as members of political parties such as the Socialist Party, National Party, Labor Party, People's Party, Jewish Bund and Poalei Zion. He also spoke to the British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden, giving a detailed statement on what he had seen in Warsaw and Bełżec. In 1943 in London he met the well-known journalist Arthur Koestler, the later author of Darkness at Noon. He then traveled to the United States and reported to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In July 1943 Karski again personally reported to Roosevelt about the situation in Poland. Karski met with many other government and civic leaders in the United States, including Felix Frankfurter, Cordell Hull, William Joseph Donovan, and Stephen Wise. Frankfurter, skeptical of Karski's report, said later "I did not say that he was lying, I said that I could not believe him. There is a difference."[7] Karski presented his report to media, bishops of various denominations (including Cardinal Samuel Stritch), members of the Hollywood film industry and artists, but without result. His warning about the Yalta solution and the plight of stateless peoples became an inspiration for the formation of the Office of High Commissioner for Refugees after the war.[8] In 1944 Karski published Courier from Poland: The Story of a Secret State (with a selection featured in Collier's six weeks before the book's release[9][10]), in which he related his experiences in wartime Poland.
