FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Will this be on iTunes?
--No, not the iTunes store, but it can be in your iTunes for free. Download it from my website, djearworm.com. You don't need to pay the iTunes store to put free mp3s in your iTunes software, you just download the mp3 and then double-click on it (or drag it into your iTunes if that doesn't work).
2. Why is that artist I hate in your list, and why isn't that artist I love in your list?
--This is based on the Top 25 songs of Billboard's 2009 year-end list. I didn't choose the songs. The complete list is here: http://www.billboard.com/charts-year-end#/charts-year-end/hot-100-songs?year=2009
3. Why is that song from last year in the list? Why isn't that song which was so popular toward the end of the year on the list?
--Billboard's cutoff date is Dec 1st, to give them time to calculate the results and publish them well before New Years Day, which is good for me, since I need a little time to put this together and release it before the end of the year!
4. How long did this take you?
--If you add it up, about a month. About two weeks earlier in the year using educated guesswork, and then two weeks between when Billboard released the list and when I put it out.
5. What software did you use?
--Ableton Live for arranging the music. It's AWESOME, and it's what I use to DJ live with as well. Final Cut Pro for the video. For acapella extraction, see the next question.
6. How did you get the vocals without the instruments?
--if you search for "acapella" with the name of your song, you might find an isolated vocal. In some cases, I use a bit of Adobe Audition (the Center Channel Extractor effect) for vocal isolation. This removes instruments that are to the left or right in your stereo, and leaves only the sound that's in the center. You can also use this effect to take an instrumental and a full track to create an acapella. Check out my book "Audio Mashup Construction Kit" for more details on this technique, there's a whole chapter on it. In a few instances I used Melodyne Studio for vocal isolation.
7. What are the lyrics? Who sang that one part? I didn't hear that one artist!
--I've posted the complete lyrics here, as well as a guide to where each of the lyrics and instruments came from:
http://djearworm.com/united-state-of-pop-2009-blame-it-on-the-pop-lyrics.htm
8. I want to make mashups, do you have any tips?
--Learn as much music theory as possible! Get ACID or Ableton Live, and learn it well. Make sure you understand key and tempo, so you can sync everything and get the parts to harmonize correctly. If you're of a technical mindset, my book "Audio Mashup Construction Kit" covers my techniques in great detail.
9. Can I repost this video?
--please, no, and thanks for asking! Use the music however you want, but don't simply repost the video in its entirety on your channel. I lots of people are doing it, but I wish they wouldn't!
10. Doesn't this prove how much pop music sucks nowadays and is basically interchangeable?
--Not at all. If you alter the tempo and pitch of any music enough, you could get anything to fit together, whether it's Bach or the Black Eyed Peas. What it does prove is how far technology has come to make these alterations sound convincing. I've manipulated some of these vocals HEAVILY.

Jan. 20, 2009: Inaugural Ceremonies for Barack Obama
The nation's first African American president took office while American troops were carrying out military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan and a financial crisis had plunged the economy into recession. Obama was also the first U.S. Senator to be elected president in forty-eight years, having defeated a fellow Senator, John McCain of Arizona, the Republican candidate. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office before an immense crowd, estimated at 1.8 million, as Obama swore on the same bible used by Abraham Lincoln in 1861.

Midnight Sun | Iceland
BEST VIEWED IN HD AND FULLSCREEN (with scaling off)
Midnight Sun: A natural phenomenon occurring in the summer months north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle where the sun never fully sets and remains visible 24 hours a day.
This short time lapse film was shot during the Icelandic Midnight Sun in June of 2011.
For 17 days I travelled solo around the entire island shooting almost 24 hours, sleeping in the car, and eating whenever I had the time. During my days shooting this film I shot 38,000 images, travelled some 2900 miles, and saw some of the most amazing, beautiful, and indescribable landscapes on the planet. Iceland is absolutely one of the most beautiful and unusual places you could ever imagine. Especially during the Midnight Sun when the quality of light hitting the landscape is very unusual, and very spectacular.
Iceland is a landscape photographers paradise and playground, and should be number 1 on every photographers must visit list. Iceland during the Midnight Sun is in sort of a permanent state of sunset. The sun never full sets and travels horizontally across the horizon throughout the night, as can be seen in the opening shot and at the :51 second mark in the video.
During the Arctic summer, sunset was at midnight and sunrise was at 3am. The Arctic summer sun provided 24 hours a day of light, with as much as 6 hours daily of "Golden light". Once the sun had set it wouldn't even get dark enough for the stars to come out, and they don't start to reappear until August.
My advice to everyone out there, photographer or not, is simple... You MUST visit Iceland sometime during your lifetime. You will never regret it.

The Longest Way 1.0 - walk through China and grow a beard! - TIMELAPSE
In 2008, I walked through China - one year, more than 4500km. All the while, I let my hair and my beard grow. This is the resulting video.
Add me on FB: http://www.facebook.com/crehage Or drop by on my blog: http://www.thelongestway.com
Additional info:
- I never finished my original goal of walking to Germany. Instead, I walked for a year and roughly 4500km, passed the Gobi desert, and then decided to stop walking for now.
- All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi was completed solely on foot, straight good old walking. There are instances where you can see me in the video sitting on a plane or riding a boat, but those are during breaks I had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal things.
- I had been planning this trip for over a year before I even started, and getting as far as I got was an experience for which I am very grateful.
- Obtaining the necessary visa for a trip like this was not very easy, hence I had to go back to Beijing a few times to resolve some issues.
- This is not a strict "1 pic a day" video, because I wanted to make it a bit more alive by adding some additional movement. Sometimes during the film you would follow me turn around, or something would happen in the background. I tried to capture these moments to make the video more interesting.

Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama: Swearing-in Ceremony and Inaugural Address (2009)
http://thefilmarchive.org/
January 20, 2009
The inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States took place on Tuesday, January 20, 2009. The inauguration, which set a record attendance for any event held in Washington, D.C., marked the commencement of the four-year term of Barack Obama as President and Joe Biden as Vice President. Based on the combined attendance numbers, television viewership, and Internet traffic, it was among the most-observed events ever by the global audience.
"A New Birth of Freedom", a phrase from the Gettysburg Address, served as the inaugural theme to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth year of Abraham Lincoln. In his speeches to the crowds, Obama referred to ideals expressed by Lincoln about renewal, continuity and national unity. Obama mentioned these ideals in his speech to stress the need for shared sacrifice and a new sense of responsibility to answer America's challenges at home and abroad.
Obama and others paid homage to Lincoln in the form of tributes and references during several of the events, starting with a commemorative train tour from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Washington, D.C. on January 17, 2009. The inaugural events held in Washington, D.C. from January 18 to January 21, 2009 included concerts, a national day of community service on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the swearing-in ceremony, luncheon and parade, inaugural balls, and the interfaith inaugural prayer service. The presidential oath as administered to Obama during his swearing-in ceremony on January 20 strayed slightly from the oath of office prescribed in the United States Constitution, which led to its re‑administration the next evening.
In addition to a larger than usual celebrity attendance, the Presidential Inaugural Committee increased its outreach to ordinary citizens to encourage greater participation in inaugural events compared with participation in recent past inaugurations. For the first time, the committee opened the entire length of the National Mall as the public viewing area for the swearing-in ceremony, breaking with the tradition of past inaugurations. Selected American citizens participated in the train tour and other inaugural events, and a philanthropist organized a People's Inaugural Ball for disadvantaged people who otherwise would be unable to afford to attend the inaugural festivities. Among the celebrations for the inauguration, the committee hosted a first-ever Neighborhood Inaugural Ball with free or affordable tickets for ordinary citizens.
A central theme of President Obama's inaugural address was a call to restore responsibility—both in terms of accountability in Washington and the responsibility of ordinary people to get involved. Obama's address did not have memorable sound bite phrases. Instead, he used traditional references to connect his new administration with the nation's history in a speech that was understated deliberately, according to rhetoric expert James Mackin.
Obama concluded the second paragraph of his address by saying, "we the people have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears and true to our founding documents." The speech reinforced words such as "legacy" and "heritage", as well as values such as "honesty", "courage" and "patriotism", which "are old" values. Near the end of the speech, Obama referred to words written by Thomas Paine in The American Crisis, which were ordered by George Washington to be read to his troops: "Let it be told to the future world ... that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive ... that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet [it]." Because Obama's campaign message focused on the need for change, Mackin noted that Obama sought to reassure Americans that he would operate as President within the margins of the nation's traditions.
Obama's goal for his Inaugural speech was to stir the following response among Americans: "This is why I want to go into public service and be a better politician. This is why I want to go home and be a better parent, better worker, better citizen."
As part of Obama's call for responsibility, he said "what is required of us now is a new era of responsibility—a recognition, on the part of every American" and "those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account." Obama quoted the lyrics of the Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields song "Pick Yourself Up" from the musical comedy Swing Time, saying that "starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America." In an article for The New York Times, columnist and former drama critic Frank Rich noted the link to the lyric in Field's song from the movie, writing that Obama offered in his address "one subtle whiff of the Great Depression."
