Death Deceit and the Nile : The Mysteries of the Nile Revealed
Available on DVD from www.digitalclassicsdvd.co.uk and all major retailers. Only 150 years ago, the area of Africa south of the Sahara desert remained a vast, unexplored wilderness and a place of myth and danger. In 1856, two starkly contrasting Englishmen set out for the centre of Africa in search of the greatest geographical prize since the 'discovery' of America: the source of the White Nile river. The expedition was led by the celebrated explorer Richard Francis Burton with Indian Army officer, John Hanning Speke, as second in command. In Death, Deceit & the Nile, the present-day explorer and writer Michael Asher follows in the footsteps of these two men. For Asher, one central mystery lies at the heart of Burton's turbulent life: why, after this groundbreaking expedition to Africa, which should have guaranteed his place in history, did Burton become an outcast? Also, why did Burton and Speke become mortal enemies? And why did Speke claim that he made the discovery before meeting a violent and mysterious death.

Speke Bay Lodge
Welcome to Speke Bay Lodge Speke Bay Lodge is located on the south-eastern shore of Lake Victoria in Tanzania, East Africa. It is 15 kilometres from the Serengeti National Park, and 125 kilometres north of Mwanza. Speke Bay is part of Speke Gulf, named after the famous explorer John Hanning Speke, who, in 1858, discovered Lake Victoria to be the source of the Nile. Embraced by savannah, the Lodge looks like a small village, stretched out along the shores of the lake. The main buildings and luxury accommodation are round in form, built to perfection, painted white and thatched with a grass roof in the traditional style of the local tribe, the Sukuma. Since the Lodge is outside but close to the Serengeti National Park, it is the ideal place to start or end your safari, or relax during your travels. Excursions in boats and on mountain bikes are offered, so you can truly experience Africa close up; you can fish from the beach for Tilapia, go out in a boat to catch Nile perch, or wander around on the Lodge's 100 hectares of savannah, looking for birds. ©2009 www.moivaro.com / Tanzania Safari Channel

Lake Victoria, Jinja, Uganda
Lake Victoria or Victoria Nyanza (also known as Ukerewe, Nalubaale, Sango, or Lolwe) is one of the African Great Lakes. The lake was named after the United Kingdom's Queen Victoria, by John Hanning Speke, the first European to see the lake. With a surface area of 68800 square kilometres (26600 sq mi), Lake Victoria is Africa's largest lake, and the largest tropical lake in the world, and is Earth's second largest freshwater lake - Only North America's Lake Superior is larger. In terms of volume, it is the world's eighth largest continental lake, containing 2750 cubic kilometres (2.2 billion acre-feet) of water. The lake receives most of its water from direct precipitation. Its largest influent is the Kagera River, the mouth of which lies on the lake's western shore. The only river to leave the lake, the White Nile (known as the "Victoria Nile" as it leaves the lake), leaves at Jinja, Uganda, on the lake's north shore. Wiki

www.piersgibbon.com 150 years ago, Africa south of the Sahara desert remained an unexplored wilderness. It also held a secret that obsessed Victorian geographers the source of the White Nile river - the greatest geographical prize since the 'discovery' of America. In 1856, two Englishmen set out for the centre of Africa -the celebrated explorer, scholar and linguist Richard Francis Burton and an Indian Army officer, John Hanning Speke. The present-day explorer and writer Michael Asher follows in the footsteps of these two men. For Asher, one central mystery lies at the heart of Burton's turbulent life: why, after this groundbreaking expedition to Africa, which should have guaranteed his place in history, did Burton become an outcast, finally buried in an extraordinary tomb in an obscure west London cemetery? Asher has searched for clues to explain how, in the space of two years, Burton and Speke, once close friends, became mortal enemies. Why was it that Speke claimed that he, not Burton, was the discoverer of the true source of the White Nile? And why, on the day before Speke's claim was to be publicly evaluated, did he meet a violent and mysterious end?

SPEKE'S GAZELLLE
Speke's Gazelle (Gazella spekei) is the smallest of the gazelle species. It is confined to the horn of Africa where it inhabits stony brush, grass steppes, and semi deserts (Kingdom 1982, 1997). This species has been sometimes regarded as a subspecies of the dorcas gazelle though this is now widely disregarded (Groves 1969). Severe habitat fragmentation means it is now impossible to assess the natural migratory or nomadic patterns of G. spekei. (East 1996). Its numbers are under threat, and despite an increase in population it was announced by the IUCN in 2007 that its status had risen from vulnerable to endangered. Captive population is maintained, and the wild population exists in the lower ten thousands. This Gazelle is currently (2008) classified as endangered under the IUCN Red List. Speke's Gazelle is named after John Hanning Speke, an English explorer of Central Africa.

The Eightfold Life of Marco Pallis (1895 - 1989) by Alexander Maitland
Recorded at the Buddhist Society - Wednesday 6th June 2012 at 6.30 pm Marco Pallis's first book, Peaks and Lamas, published in 1939, describes how mountaineering expeditions in the Himalayas and Tibet introduced him to Buddhism and a lifelong spiritual quest. Buddhism and music became vital preoccupations. Together they inspired an opera based on the 11th century saint, Tibet's national poet, Milarepa. This work remained, sadly, unfinished at the time of Pallis's death. Alexander Maitland vividly portrays Marco Pallis from personal recollections and the recollections of others who knew him. He was a fine mountaineer, soldier, Buddhist, teacher of the viol, concert artist, composer, philosopher and writer. His books and his music are among the surest keys to an appreciation of Marco Pallis's way of life, his philosophy and wisdom. Alexander Maitland's interests include music, painting and architecture. He first met Marco Pallis in 1966, while researching a life of the explorer John Hanning Speke. Later he wrote biographies of Freya Stark and Sir Wilfred Thesiger with whom he collaborated on other books including Freya Stark's Rivers of Time and Wilfred Thesiger's Among the Mountains. Alexander Mailtland is married and lives in London.
