The Pakistani Taliban say they'll use suicide bombers and snipers to kill former President Pervez Musharraf when he returns to Pakistan. In a video released on Saturday, a member of the Taliban who's alleged to have taken part in a previous assassination attempt on Musharraf, said a special squad has been prepared to kill the former president. The video claims the squad consists of suicide bombers, a sniper team, a special assault team and close combat forces. The video then shows the assassination squad training in combat uniform. The authenticity of the video has not been verified. Musharraf angered the Taliban and other Islamist groups by supporting the US war on terror, following the September 11th attacks in 2001. He later launched a major crackdown on militants in Pakistan. Musharraf is due to return to Pakistan on Sunday, after 6 years living in exile in London and Dubai. He's planning to take part in the coming parliamentary elections on May 11th.

Newly elected Pope Francis has met his predecessor for lunch, the first time such a meeting has been possible for more than 600 years. Pope Francis was flown by helicopter to Castel Gandolfo for the private lunch with Pope Emeritus Benedict. Benedict has lived at the lakeside castle south of Rome since last month, when he became the first pope in six centuries to resign, citing ill health. Cardinal Jorge Maria Bergoglio was elected to succeed him on 13 March. No known precedent There is no public record of any previous meeting between a Pope and a former Pope, as the new head of the Catholic Church is usually elected after the death of his predecessor. In 1294, former hermit Celestine V resigned after five months as Pope. Boniface VIII was elected days later, and had his predecessor imprisoned. Celestine was dead within a year. Israel and Turkey to restore diplomatic ties

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Latest-News/101615183364879 https://twitter.com/__LatestNews__ The move follows apology of Israeli PM for a deadly naval raid against a Gaza-bound international flotilla in 2010. Israel and Turkey have agreed to restore full diplomatic relations after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologised for a deadly naval raid against a Gaza-bound international flotilla in a turnaround partly brokered by the US President. Netanyahu said on Friday he "expressed apology" to Turkey for any error that led to the death of nine Turkish nationals in the 2010 incident. Israel also agreed to compensate the families of the victims, he said. It was a surprising turnaround for Netanyahu who had long rejected calls to apologise. He announced the breakthrough after a 20-minute phone conversation with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. US President Barack Obama helped broker the fence-mending while visiting Israel, but the sides had been reaching out to each other before. "They agreed to restore normalisation between Israel and Turkey, including the dispatch of ambassadors and the cancellation of legal steps against Israeli soldiers,'' a statement from Netanyahu's office said. Netanyahu "regretted the recent deterioration of relations between Israel and Turkey and expressed his commitment to overcoming their differences in order to advance peace and stability in the region," it said. "In light of Israel's investigation into the incident which pointed to a number of operational mistakes, the Prime Minister expressed Israel's apology to the Turkish people for any mistakes that might have led to the loss of life or injury and agreed to conclude an agreement on compensation/nonliability." During the phone call, Erdogan underlined the importance of strong cooperation and friendship between Turkey and Israel. "Erdogan told [Israeli premier] Binyamin Netanyahu that he valued centuries-long strong friendship and cooperation between the Turkish and Israeli nations," Erdogan's office said. Comments 'misunderstood' It said Netanyahu appreciated Erdogan's interview with a Danish paper in which he said he was misunderstood in remarks at a UN conference in Vienna. Erdogan said Islamophobia should be considered a crime against humanity "just like Zionism, like anti-Semitism and like fascism." His comments drew wide condemnation. Erdogan later told Politiken that he was misunderstood and was criticizing Israeli policy. Erdogan's office said: "Our prime minister accepted the apology in the name of the Turkish people." Erdogan "expressed that it was saddening that relations, which are of vital strategic importance for peace and the stability of the region, have been soured in recent years," the statement said. Al Jazeera's Elif Ural, reporting from Istanbul, said that Hamas, armed Palestinian group, has sent a message expressing disappointment that Turkey has accepted the apology. Israel and Turkey were once close allies. Relations began to decline after Erdogan, whose party has roots in Turkey's Islamist movement, became prime minister in 2003. Tensions raged after Erdogan attacked Israel for the high Palestinian death toll in an Israeli campaign aimed at stopping daily rocket fire from Gaza on Israel in the winter of 2008, at one point storming off a stage he shared with the Israeli president at the high-profile World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Commando raid Animosity peaked on May 31, 2010, when Israeli commandos boarded a flotilla of six humanitarian ships on their way to Gaza. Nine Turkish activists were killed on the lead ship Mavi Marmara, sparking international condemnation and contentious diplomatic dispute between Israel and Turkey. An inquiry into the incident said Israel broke international humanitarian and human rights law. The inquiry, which was later endorsed by the United Nations Human Rights Council, found "clear evidence to support prosecutions" for crimes including "wilful killing; torture or inhuman treatment; wilfully causing great suffering or serious injury to body or health." Al Jazeera's Anita McNaught, reporting from Cairo, said Turkey got "almost everything it wanted" from the apology, including acknowledgement of Israel's "operational errors" and offer of compensation. "This is an extraordinary event and a completely unexpected one," our correspondent said. "This has been enormously damaging schism between these two countries [Israel and Turkey]". Israel has imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip since June 2007 after Hamas took control of the territory. Though the Israeli restrictions have been eased, Israel still enforces a naval blockade on the territory. The lifting of the blockade, which Turkey has also demanded from Israel, is not covered in the apology, according to Al Jazeera's McNaught.

Abu Sayyaf release Australian hostage Warren Rodwell. An Australian man kidnapped 15 months ago by an al-Qaeda-linked group in the Philippines has been released. An emaciated-looking Warren Rodwell was freed on Saturday near Pagadian city in the southern Philippines, police said. He was kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf militants in 2011, and had last been shown alive in a video posted on social media websites in December. Abu Sayyaf is considered the smallest and most radical of the extremist movements in the southern Philippines. Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr welcomed the news, saying the release had been the result of a joint effort by authorities in both countries. "The Philippines government had the lead role in this case and deserve congratulations for their tireless efforts on Mr Rodwell's behalf," said Mr Carr. He added that Mr Rodwell was being moved to a safe location and that the focus now was on his recovery.

Syrian WAR - Lebanese Prime Minister Quits - Najib Mikati
Syrian WAR - Lebanese Prime Minister Quits - Najib Mikati

ARTICLE ~ https://sites.google.com/site/kitkirja/syrian-war---lebanese-prime-minister-quits ~ ~ John Rand ~ https://www.facebook.com/groups/John.Rand.Group/ ALSO https://www.facebook.com/JohnA.Rand/ Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati Just as Lebanon is struggling to bring security situation under control with fighting in Northern Tripoli claiming six lives, the political situation also entered a period of uncertainty. Lebanese premier Najib Miqati announced his resignation following a lengthy cabinet session. The agenda of the cabinet session included extending the tenure of Lebanon's police chief and a new electoral law; Two issues which turned out to be sticking points that led Miqati to his decision. The issue of police chief Ashraf Rifi in particular was the dividing matter. The majority of cabinet ministers which includes Hezbollah and its allies rejected the extension for Rifi, who is known to have close ties to Saudi Arabia. But experts say there are factors behind the scenes which also played a major role in this development. Lebanon's political vacuum could put the already delicate security situation in jeopardy. The country is already deeply divided between those who support a political settlement in Syria and those who support the removal of Bashar Assad. It is not known now in which direction Lebanon's political landscape is heading. National salvation government appears far off amid political divisions, which leaves the most plausible scenario being the Miqati government remaining as a caretaker government. It appears that Lebanon's destiny is to face permanent political and security dilemmas. But this time the situation might be even more dangerous with the unprecedented crisis in Syria which seems to be on its way to creating an unprecedented crisis in Lebanon. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has resigned after a deadlock in his cabinet over preparations for forthcoming legislative elections in June. "I announce the resignation of the government, hoping that this will open the way for the major political blocs to take responsibility and come together to bring Lebanon out of the unknown," said Mikati. Mikati's resignation came after disagreements on the formation of an electoral watchdog and the extension of the term of office of police chief Major General Ashraf Rifi. "There is no way to be loyal to Lebanon and protect it other than through dialogue that opens the way to the formation of a salvation government that represents all Lebanese political powers and takes responsibility for saving the nation," Mikati said. US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Washington was "watching the situation in Lebanon very, very carefully." "Our basic view of this is that we believe the Lebanese people deserve a government that reflects their aspirations and one that will strengthen Lebanon's stability, its sovereignty and its independence," she said. Mikati quit against the backdrop of tensions in the northern city of Tripoli where six people, including a soldier, have been killed in clashes between supporters and opponents of the Syrian government since Thursday. The Syrian conflict has spilled over into Beirut and other Lebanese areas, and clashes have frequently been reported along border regions. Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence. 2013-03-23
