A Republic, If You Can Keep It - The American Form of Government
There is a reason we refer to "the rule of law and not of men" when discussing the American political system. It is because a republican form of government seeks to restrain the unbridled and quixotic passions of pure democracy, rather than yield to them. It also rejects the desire of the majority in favor of individual rights. Democracy seeks to assert the right of the group, but so does a mob with a hangman's noose. There's also a reason why lady justice is blindfolded: She is not to see the individuals, interest groups, race, or any characteristic at all of those that plead before her--her proper concern is not directed towards them; her care is to decide the law. It's also why the question of justice as presented before judges is not one of mercy (that belongs in the will of the people as expressed through their representatives in law), but one of exacting only what the law requires be exacted. The rule of law is all about the removal of arbitrary will from its application. A judge who seeks to apply his own notions of justice and mercy (as opposed to those notions being defined by the people through law) is a judge who seeks to impose arbitrary will in opposition to the rule of law. And it is arbitrary will that is the very definition of tyranny.

Ancient Rome V - Politics of the Republic
This is the fifth ofmany chapters in History with a Twist of Lime's look on "The Historical History of Ancient Rome." This chapter deals with the different branches of the political system under the Roman Republic, including the jobs of magistrates such as consuls, praetors, aediles, quaestors, proconsuls, and censors, the increased prestige of the Senate, the roles of the Century and Tribal Assemblies, and an example of one of the few civilizations in recorded history where its citizens willingly allow a dictator to have complete rule. As this is one of many chapters being produced over this project, I would invite you to watch the other chapters dealing with the history of Ancient Rome. Russian Red Army Choir & Leningrad Cowboys - "Battle Hymn Of The Republic" - 10/11
TOTAL BALALAIKA SHOW (1993) - part 10 of 11 -------------------- -- "Battle Hymn Of The Republic" ======================================== Russia's renowned Alexandrov Red Army Ensemble jams with Finland's outlandish rockers the Leningrad Cowboys. The odd pairing of these two groups results in an inspiring collaboration. The concert took place on 12 June 1993 on Senate Square in Helsinki, Finland. The event drew a crowd of approximately 70000 people from two nations - Finland and Russia - that had been engaged in a state of "peaceful coexistence" during the Cold War. The concert featured an eclectic mix of Western rock and Russian folk music, including a balalaika rendition of "Stairway to Heaven", and folk dancers performing to rock songs. ======================================== The Leningrad Cowboys is a Finnish rock and roll band famous for it's humorous songs and concerts featuring the Soviet Red Army Choir. Currently, the band has eleven Cowboys and two Leningrad Ladies. The songs, all somewhat influenced by polka and progressive rock, and performed in English, have themes such as 'vodka', 'tractors', 'rockets', and 'Genghis Khan', as well as folkloric Russian songs, rock and roll ballads and covers from bands as diverse as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, all with lots of humour. ----------------------------------- TheRed Army Choir (Choir Aleksandrov) is a performing ensemble that served as the official army choir of the former Soviet Union's Red ...

Estonian War of Independence [Part 1 : Birth of the Republic]
-Part 1 : Birth of the Republic I will happily answer to all questions. The first part of a little series I´m making about the Estonian War of Independence (1918-1920) . The first part tries to give a brief picture about the road to independence in 1917, ending with total independence in 1918 . I apologize for all the grammar mistakes. More is coming soon! Dedicated to all who fought in the War of Independence ! In November 1917, upon the disintegration of the Russian Empire, a diet of the Autonomous Governorate of Estonia, the Estonian Provincial Assembly, which had been elected in the spring of that year, proclaimed itself the highest authority in Estonia. Soon thereafter, the Bolsheviks dissolved the Estonian Provincial Assembly and temporarily forced the pro-independence Estonians underground in the capital Tallinn. A few months later, using a moment between the Red Army's retreat and the arrival of the Imperial German Army, the Salvation Committee of the Estonian National Council Maapäev issued the Estonian Declaration of Independence in Tallinn on February 24, 1918 and formed the Estonian Provisional Government. This first period of independence was extremely short-lived, as the German troops entered Tallinn on the following day. The German authorities recognized neither the provisional government, nor its claim for Estonia's independence, counting them as a self-styled group usurping sovereign rights of the Baltic nobility.

Where is Azerbaijan?
• ITV - Public Television and Radio Broadcasting Company • en.itv.az Azerbaijan (i /ˌæzərbaɪˈdʒɑːn/ az-ər-by-jahn; Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan), officially the Republic of Azerbaijan (Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan Respublikası) is the largest country in the Caucasus region of Eurasia. Located at the crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe, it is bounded by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south. The exclave of Nakhchivan is bounded by Armenia to the north and east, Iran to the south and west, while having a short borderline with Turkey to the northwest. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the first democratic and secular republic in the Muslim world. was established in 1918, but was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1920. Azerbaijan regained independence in 1991. Shortly thereafter, during the Nagorno-Karabakh War, neighboring Armenia occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, its surrounding territories and the enclaves of Karki, Yukhary Askipara, Barkhudarly and Sofulu. The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic continues to be not diplomatically recognized by any nation and is still considered a de jure part of Azerbaijan, but has been de facto independent since the end of the war. Azerbaijan, a nation with a majority Turkic and Shia population, is a secular and a unitary republic with an ancient and historic cultural heritage. Azerbaijan is one of the six independent Turkic states as well as the active members of the ...

62nd UN General Assembly - Macedonian President speech (1)
25.09.2007 Speech of the Macedonian President Crvenkovski at the 62nd UN General Assembly in New York The new president of the United Nations General Assembly, Srgjan Kerim called the Balkan country's head of state, Branko Crvenkovski, as president of the Republic of Macedonia when he came to the rostrum to address world leaders, prompting an immediate protest from the Greek ambassador in the chamber. Greece objected to the name when Macedonia declared independence from the former Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, contending that it implied claims on the northern Greek province of the same name. But in 1988 the Greek state renamed their Northern region from 'Northern Greece' into 'Makedonia', that part of Macedonia (Aegean Macedonia) which was "given" to the Greek kingdom in 1912/13 by the Bucharest Treaty. The Treaty of Paris and Bucharest after the Balkan wars partitioned Macedonia finally into 3 parts (Vardar Macedonia to Serbia, later to Yugoslavia, Pirin Macedonia to Bulgaria and Aegean Macedonia to Greece). After the break up in Yugoslavia, Greece deprived the Republic of Macedonia's right of self-determination, starting anti-Macedonian propaganda and forced Macedonia to use a ridiculous referance-name.
