New Orleans -- Bobby Hackett, Jack Teagarden 1955
New Orleans -- Bobby Hackett, Jack Teagarden I could not resist to post another audio clip from this wonderful recording session from California in October 1955. Many musicians have played and recorded Hoagy Carmichael's "New Orleans" and all these musicians had this 1955 recording in their mind while playing it. It is the ultimate melody phrasing of Bobby Hackett that has become a challenge to every serious jazz cornet or trumpet player. However, none has even come close to the Hackett standard. This made Hackett the ultimate jazz master in playing his sweet style of jazz. Even today on the musac channels and even in supermakets one often hears a melody been played by strings intertwined with the intriguing brilliant improvisations of Bobby Hackett. In this recording: Jack Teagarden trombone, Abe Lincoln trombone, Matty Matlock clarinet, Nappy Lamare guitar, Don Owens piano, Phil Stephens bass and Nick Fatool drums.

BOBBY HACKETT THE GREATEST CORNETIST
Bobby Hackett, the cornetist whose mellow tone and graceful style made him a favorite of both jazz and pop music audiences. Whitney Balliett described Bobby Hackett in The New Yorker as "a unique and extremely successful alloy of Beiderbecke and Armstrong." "His tone." Mr. Balliett wrote "which is quiet and shining, resembles Beiderbecke's and so does his three-steps-up, two steps down method of improvising. But his sustained notes and way of playing just behind the beat and of occasionally slipping into double time are straight out of Louis Armstrong." Born in Providence, RI Bobby Hackett began his music career by studying the violin but switched to the trumpet and later to the cornet. He began playing professionally while in his teens and was soon appearing with some of the best known names of the "Big Band Era." Bobby Hackett appeared with Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller and Paul Whiteman among others. "Music should be pretty," he said. "You should hear and recognize the melody. And real greatness is in the simplicity. Simple things are the hardest to play and the easiest to listen to."

When the Saints go marchin' in - Bobby Hackett.1962
When the Saints go marchin' in Hackett Bobby 1962 The Bobby Hackett Sextet performs a live set in a film originally commissioned by the Goodyear Tire Company and shot on 35mm film with professional stereo sound. The shows were presented in 16 mm with a mono track Over the years the tracks faded to pink bacause of an unstable print stock and what once was an professional looking endeavor now certainly looked somewhat out of date. For years I already had these clips in my collection and I guess these were copies of the 16 mm films video and yes, mine are a bit pinkish. So what, the music is there with Hackett's beautiful cornet phrasing. Whatever tune Hackett plays, it is always worth listening to Storyville Films has painstakingly restored some of these these historical film tracks to the best possible quality. Three tracks each from the Hackett show are available on Storyville's Jazz Festival Volume I and Volume 2. The Danish Storyville Company's catalogue is presenting a heap of re-issued films on DVD and it is certainly worth visiting their website if you want to order very reasonably priced jazz films for full screen watching on TV. storyvilledvd.com These performances were recorded in New York City in 1962, and offers a look at these legendary performers in their absolute prime. Bobby Hackett cornet at 47, Bob Wilber clarinet at 34, Urbie Green trombone at 36, Dave McKenna on piano at 32. Nabil Totah on bass and Morey Feld on drums.

Jazz me blues - Bobby Hackett 1938
Jazz me blues Hackett 1938 Bobby Hackett and his Dixieland Band. This was part of a show called Saturday Night Swing Club in 1938, usually a presentation of the big bands from that time, but once in a while a jazz band was added as well. The musicians I recognize in this clip are Bobby Hackett trumpet, Ernie Caceres clarinet, Brad Gowens on the valve trombone and Eddie Condon on the tenor guitar. If anyone recognizes other musicians, let me know, I can edit the text of this comment.Yes, I've got control.
