add video playlist The Pakistani Taliban say they'll use suicide bombers and snipers to kill former President Pervez Musharraf when he returns to Pakistan. In a video released on Saturday, a member of the Taliban who's alleged to have taken part in a previous assassination attempt on Musharraf, said a special squad has been prepared to kill the former president. The video claims the squad consists of suicide bombers, a sniper team, a special assault team and close combat forces. The video then shows the assassination squad training in combat uniform. The authenticity of the video has not been verified. Musharraf angered the Taliban and other Islamist groups by supporting the US war on terror, following the September 11th attacks in 2001. He later launched a major crackdown on militants in Pakistan. Musharraf is due to return to Pakistan on Sunday, after 6 years living in exile in London and Dubai. He's planning to take part in the coming parliamentary elections on May 11th.

The Pakistani Taliban say they'll use suicide bombers and snipers to kill former President Pervez Musharraf when he returns to Pakistan.

Pope Francis was flown by helicopter to Castel Gandolfo for the private lunch with Pope Emeritus Benedict. Benedict has lived at the lakeside castle south of Rome since last month, when he became the first pope in six centuries to resign, citing ill health. Cardinal Jorge Maria Bergoglio was elected to succeed him on 13 March. No known precedent There is no public record of any previous meeting between a Pope and a former Pope, as the new head of the Catholic Church is usually elected after the death of his predecessor. In 1294, former hermit Celestine V resigned after five months as Pope. Boniface VIII was elected days later, and had his predecessor imprisoned. Celestine was dead within a year. In the week marking the 10th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, we spend the hour looking at the remarkable life and imminent death of Iraq War veteran Tomas Young. Citing his overwhelming physical pain from wounds that left him paralyzed in Iraq, Young recently announced he has decided to end his life by discontinuing his medicine and nourishment, which comes in the form of liquid through a feeding tube. Young joins to explain his decision from his home in Kansas City, along with his wife Claudia Cuellar. We're also joined by Phil Donahue, the legendary TV talk show host, whose 2007 documentary, "Body of War," follows Tomas' rehabilitation and his political awakening to become one of the most prominent antiwar U.S. veterans speaking out against the invasion and occupation of Iraq. "On one hand, I am sick and tired of being sick and tired," Young says. "And on the other, I don't want to watch my body waste away." Donahue calls Tomas' announcement "a very unusual act of moral courage. He wants people to see this because he came home from the most sanitized war of my lifetime. We don't see this. Less than 5 percent of us have made a personal sacrifice for this war. And Tomas is one of them." Take a moment to view our interactive Iraq War timeline at http://owl.li/jd2ur. Syrian WAR - Lebanese Prime Minister Quits - Najib Mikati
Syrian WAR - Lebanese Prime Minister Quits - Najib Mikati
  • Order:

  • Updated: 23 Mar 2013
ARTICLE ~ https://sites.google.com/site/kitkirja/syrian-war---lebanese-prime-minister-quits ~ ~ John Rand ~ https://www.facebook.com/groups/John.Rand.Group/ ALSO https://www.facebook.com/JohnA.Rand/ Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati Just as Lebanon is struggling to bring security situation under control with fighting in Northern Tripoli claiming six lives, the political situation also entered a period of uncertainty. Lebanese premier Najib Miqati announced his resignation following a lengthy cabinet session. The agenda of the cabinet session included extending the tenure of Lebanon's police chief and a new electoral law; Two issues which turned out to be sticking points that led Miqati to his decision. The issue of police chief Ashraf Rifi in particular was the dividing matter. The majority of cabinet ministers which includes Hezbollah and its allies rejected the extension for Rifi, who is known to have close ties to Saudi Arabia. But experts say there are factors behind the scenes which also played a major role in this development. Lebanon's political vacuum could put the already delicate security situation in jeopardy. The country is already deeply divided between those who support a political settlement in Syria and those who support the removal of Bashar Assad. It is not known now in which direction Lebanon's political landscape is heading. National salvation government appears far off amid political divisions, which leaves the most plausible scenario being the Miqati government remaining as a caretaker government. It appears that Lebanon's destiny is to face permanent political and security dilemmas. But this time the situation might be even more dangerous with the unprecedented crisis in Syria which seems to be on its way to creating an unprecedented crisis in Lebanon. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has resigned after a deadlock in his cabinet over preparations for forthcoming legislative elections in June. "I announce the resignation of the government, hoping that this will open the way for the major political blocs to take responsibility and come together to bring Lebanon out of the unknown," said Mikati. Mikati's resignation came after disagreements on the formation of an electoral watchdog and the extension of the term of office of police chief Major General Ashraf Rifi. "There is no way to be loyal to Lebanon and protect it other than through dialogue that opens the way to the formation of a salvation government that represents all Lebanese political powers and takes responsibility for saving the nation," Mikati said. US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Washington was "watching the situation in Lebanon very, very carefully." "Our basic view of this is that we believe the Lebanese people deserve a government that reflects their aspirations and one that will strengthen Lebanon's stability, its sovereignty and its independence," she said. Mikati quit against the backdrop of tensions in the northern city of Tripoli where six people, including a soldier, have been killed in clashes between supporters and opponents of the Syrian government since Thursday. The Syrian conflict has spilled over into Beirut and other Lebanese areas, and clashes have frequently been reported along border regions. Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence. 2013-03-23

SYRIA-Armed group detains 20 UN peacekeepers near the Golan Heights BEIRUT, March 6 (Reuters) - Syrian rebels say they have seized a convoy of United Nations observers near the Golan Heights, according to videos posted on the Internet site YouTube on Wednesday by a violence monitoring group. A young man saying he was from the "Martyrs of Yarmouk" brigade said the convoy would not be released until forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad withdrew from the village of Jamla, a mile east of the ceasefire line with the Israeli-occupied Golan. Surrounded by several rebel fighters with assault rifles, the man stood in front of a two white armoured vehicles and a truck with "UN" written on them. At least five people seen sitting in the vehicles were wearing United Nations light blue helmets and bullet-proof vests. "The command of the Martyrs of Yarmouk announced that it is holding forces of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force until the withdrawal of forces of the regime of (President) Bashar al-Assad from the outskirts of the village of Jamla," said the man, wearing civilian clothes. "If no withdrawal is made within 24 hours we will treat them as prisoners," he said, accusing them of collaborating with Assad's forces to push the rebels out of Jamla. Collection of http://zomidaily.com Burma :: State of emergency imposed in Meiktila MEIKTILA, Myanmar: Myanmar declared a state of emergency on Friday for a riot-hit town where 20 people have been killed in violence that has sparked fears of spreading unrest. Swathes of Meiktila, located 130 kilometres (80 miles) north of the capital Naypyidaw, have been reduced to ashes as the authorities struggle to establish control after three days of clashes and arson. "At least 20 people have been killed. We estimate that it could be higher but it is also difficult for us to gather all the figures," a police officer who did not want to be named told AFP. The president's office said the state of emergency would enable the military to help restore order. The situation was extremely tense on Friday with groups of men armed with knives and sticks prowling the streets. Many of the town's residents have fled their homes. A journalist saw the incinerated remains of two victims on a roadside, just one of several reports of bodies in the town, as flames raged from torched mosques and houses while other buildings smouldered unattended. "The situation is getting worse," a local resident said. "People are destroying buildings. Many people have been killed. We are scared and trying to stay safe at home." A group of reporters were stopped at knife-point by a group of men and forced to hand over their camera memory cards, according to one of the journalists. It is the worst communal violence since a wave of clashes in the western state of Rakhine last year that left at least 180 people dead and more than 110,000 displaced. A local lawmaker said that about 25 people had been killed in Meiktila, but it was not possible to verify his figures. "The situation is not good... although the government has said everything is under control," parliamentarian Win Htein, of the opposition National League for Democracy party, told AFP. As international alarm grew, a senior UN official said authorities needed to act "to prevent further loss of life or spread of violence" in the nation. "Religious leaders and other community leaders must also publicly call on their followers to abjure violence, respect the law and promote peace," Vijay Nambiar, special advisor to UN leader Ban Ki-Moon, said in a statement. The violence comes as Myanmar struggles with worsening tensions that have marred international optimism over dramatic political reforms since the end of military rule two years ago. A local police officer said an order had been given on Thursday to shoot rioters below the waist if needed to quell the violence, which apparently began with a row in a gold shop that turned into a mass street brawl. "There is a real risk of further violence unless the authorities take immediate steps to protect those at risk," said Isabelle Arradon, Amnesty International's deputy Asia Pacific director. Sectarian unrest has occasionally broken out in the past in some areas across the country, with Rakhine state a flashpoint for the tensions. Since violence broke out there last year, thousands of Rohingya -- including a growing number of women and children -- have fled the conflict in rickety boats, many heading for Malaysia. - AFP/xq
