The First Television Remote Control! (1961)
The Remote Control used to be more complicated than setting the clock on your microwave. It's no wonder that the word "couch potato" is a recent term and not an old adage. People before the 1950s actually watched TV without a remote, as I'm sure all of your elders have told you about already. That means no channel surfing, no immobility for hours, no perfect modern-day relaxation/fattening and, most importantly, no DVRs. Instead, they had to sit up close to the TV to manually push buttons to change the channels or lower the volume. That, or walk back and forth from their seat. It's a real toss up on which one's worse. So, you can imagine the great fanfare that came with the invention of the remote control. In all its black and white glory, the video on the right exhibits the grandeur of the 500 pound-looking remote control meant to make life so much easier. See the brick for yourself at 0:49, complete with awesome narration. The amount of programming and complication that went with these early TVs is amazing. It's great when technology actually scales back and makes things simpler to move forward. When I get home, I'm going to hug my remote. Producer: Handy (Jam) Organization Sponsor: RCA Victor

Pit and the Pendulum 1961. (Vincent Price) Full Movie * www.webcaffe.rs
Follow as on twitter twitter.com "The Pit and the Pendulum" is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe and first published in 1842 in the literary annual The Gift: A Christmas and New Year's Present for 1843. The story is about the torments endured by a prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition, though Poe skews historical facts. The narrator of the story describes his experience of being tortured. The story is especially effective at inspiring fear in the reader because of its heavy focus on the senses, such as sound, emphasizing its reality, unlike many of Poe's stories which are aided by the supernatural. The traditional elements established in popular horror tales at the time are followed, but critical reception has been mixed. The tale has been adapted to film several times. www.webcaffe.rs

Mysterious Island (1961) Part 1
Jules Verne's classic adventure is perfectly matched with Ray Harryhausen's timeless movie magic in Mysterious Island. Based on Verne's sequel to 20000 Leagues Under the Sea, this rousing Civil War-era fantasy begins when a band of Union war prisoners(Michael Craig, Michael Callan and Gary Merrill) and one Confederate straggler escape in a hot-air balloon, which crash-lands on the titular island of mystery. Under the capable direction of genre specialist Cy Endfield, the story features giant oysters, bees, a prehistoric Phororhacos (a giant chickenlike bird!), an undersea cephalopod, a giant crab, and enough danger to keep its resourceful ensemble on constant alert. Captain Nemo (Herbert Lom) is a third-act hero, pursuing an ill-fated dream to save humanity from hunger and war. Also stars Joan Greenwood.

RABINDRANATH TAGORE (1961,Documentary) - by Satyajit Ray
Rabindranath Tagore Script. commentary & Direction: Satyajit Ray 1961, India. Documentary, 54 min, B/W Producer: Films Division, Govt. of India Cinematography: Soumendu Roy Editing: Dulal Dutta Art Direction: Bansi Chandragupta Music: Jyotirindra Moitra Cast Raya Chatterjee, Sovanlal Ganguli, Smaran Ghosal, Purnendu Mukherjee, Kallol Bose, Subir Bose, Phani Nan, Norman Ellis Summary The documentary details the life and work of the celebrated Bengali writer Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West." Rabindranath Tagore was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore, born in Calcutta. He was educated at home. At seventeen he was sent to England for formal schooling, which he did not complete. Tagore was knighted by the ruling British Government in 1915, but within a few years he resigned the honor as a protest against British policies in India. The documentary was made to celebrate Tagore's birth centenary in May 1961. Ray was conscious that he was making an official portrait of India's celebrated poet and hence the film does not include any controversial aspects of Tagore's life. However, it is far from being a propaganda film. The film comprises dramatized episodes from the poet's life and archived images and documents. Comments ...

The Best View in the Solar System.
Exactly 51 years ago today, on April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit earth. Today, man-kind has the International Space Station, which has continually been inhabited by humans since the November 2, 2000.
These lucky explorers and scientists clearly have the best view in the solar system.
Time-lapse sequences looking back at our multi-colored planet from low earth orbit, as viewed from the International Space Station. Images edited using Adobe Lightroom with some cropping and image manipulation.
The video plays best if you let it load a bit first.

A very big thanks to NASA astronaut Don Pettit (@astro_Pettit) for taking most of these images.
This time-lapse is dedicated to the next big step in human exploration, and to those who are brave enough to take it.

Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. On his own he added stints in New York and Los Angeles with leading acting teachers, as well as learning the grace and style of many forms of dance and athletics. With courses perceptively, he has also recognized the importance of acquiring an understanding of the business side of the industry, and the varied aspects of technology and production. There are some people clearly born to follow the path they have chosen from the start. Mani Nasry has the passion to succeed, the curiosity and ingenuity required to lead and collaborate in an industry known for its impact and appeal, and the strength of character and work ethic to immerse himself in finding and telling an unforgettable story.

Who Put The Bomp - Barry Mann
The single debuted on Billboard's Hot 100 on August 7, 1961, and remained for twelve weeks, peaking at # 7[3]. Mann's version did not chart in the UK, though a cover version by the Viscounts reached # 21 there in September, 1961, and another version by Showaddywaddy charted at # 37 in August, 1982. "Who Put the Bomp (in the Bomp, Bomp, Bomp)" is a Doo-wop style hit song from 1961 co-written (with Gerry Goffin) and recorded by Barry Mann. He was backed up by The Halos, who had previously backed up Curtis Lee on the song "Pretty Little Angel Eyes". The song was originally released as a single on the ABC-Paramount label (10237). In this song, Mann sings about the frequent use of nonsense lyrics in Doo-Wop music, and how his girl fell in love with him after listening to several of such songs. Examples of the type of song referred to include the Marcels' version of "Blue Moon" (in which they sing "Bomp bomp ba bomp, ba bomp ba bomp bomp" and "dip-de-dip-de-dip") and the Edsels' "Rama-Lama-Ding-Dong", both of which charted earlier the same year. The song inspired the title of a music magazine, called "Who Put the Bomp". The song fits into the category of "self-referential" songs. Rock songs are often about rock (We're gonna rock around the clock), reggae songs about reggae, rap songs about rap, etc. In this particular song that aspect is accentuated by the fact that Mann is a songwriter singing about songwriters. It is also an ironic, lightly self-mocking song. This is a ...
