"Love the Way You Lie" is a song recorded by American rapper Eminem for his 2010 studio album Recovery. It was the second single from the album, released by Interscope-Geffen-A&M on August 9, 2010. It was inspired by American songwriter Skylar Grey's idea of being in an abusive romantic relationship with the music industry. After Eminem heard the demo track, recorded by Grey and British producer Alex da Kid, he wrote the lyrics and asked Barbadian singer Rihanna to sing the chorus. The recording sessions were held at Effigy Studios in Ferndale, Michigan, and Sun Studios in Dublin.
Produced and composed by Alex da Kid, "Love the Way You Lie" is a midtempo hip hop ballad with a pop refrain. Accompanied by guitar, piano and violin, the lyrics refer to two people who want to end their abusive relationship but love each other regardless. Journalists suggested that the song was influenced by Eminem's ex-wife Kimberly Scott and Rihanna's ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. It was received favorably by critics for its lyrics and melody. Rihanna has said that its theme of domestic violence, a topic on which she claims many people do not have insight, is what makes the song effective.
Eminem performed "Love the Way You Lie" live at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010, MTV Video Music Awards and many music festivals. The song's accompanying music video, directed by Joseph Kahn and filmed in July 2010, stars Dominic Monaghan and Megan Fox in a violent relationship while Eminem and Rihanna perform in front of a burning house. Although Kahn and some critics praised the realism, acting and visual appeal, the scenes with domestic violence caused an uproar. Fans and critics suggested that the video is based on the personal lives of Eminem and Rihanna.
Certified as Eminem's best-selling single, "Love the Way You Lie" was listed by publications among the best of 2010 and of Eminem's work. It reached number one on 25 weekly charts worldwide, including the United States Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks. The single sold more than five million copies in the US and became the best-selling single of 2010 in the United Kingdom. "Love the Way You Lie" received five Grammy Awards nominations and won a Teen Choice Award, Billboard Music Award and two People's Choice Awards. Artists and groups such as Taylor Momsen, Cher Lloyd and The Band Perry recorded cover versions. For her album Loud, Rihanna recorded a sequel titled "Love the Way You Lie (Part II)", which is narrated mostly from the female perspective.
Rihanna's approval of the song's topic ultimately influenced her decision to work with Eminem.
Development of "Love the Way You Lie" began with the creation of a backing track and hook melody. This was done by British hip hop producer Alex da Kid,[1] who wrote music mostly on his laptop.[2] At the start of production, he created loops for a few hours and produced a drum rhythm with software, before adding real instrumentation. The drum sounds were sampled from live recordings that he had saved from past years.[2] He recorded an acoustic guitar for the verses, which was the first he had ever bought: "Live guitar is definitely an element that I try to bring in and that I wanted to bring back to hip-hop."[2] He recorded the sound with a Georg Neumann U87 microphone and an Avid Mbox audio interface.[2]
In July 2009 Universal Music Publishing Group's vice president of creative affairs Jennifer Blakeman visited Skylar Grey in New York.[3] A new artist, Grey wanted help presenting her music; Blakeman suggested she collaborate with Alex da Kid.[4] Writing began in fall 2009, when the singer lived in Bandon, Oregon.[5] Alex da Kid sent Grey the track he had produced as an email attachment. The track suggested a theme of abusive relationships to her and she spontaneously sang lyrics to the melody.[6] She told Los Angeles Times that she was in an abusive relationship with the music industry: "I love it so much, and I give it all that I have, yet it beats me down."[7] The writing came naturally, as if she were composing an alternative pop song for herself.[8] She wrote the chorus to "Love the Way You Lie" in 15 minutes and recorded vocals for a demo track, which she sent to Alex da Kid.[4][9]
In early 2010 the producer offered the Shady Records Senior Director Rigo "Riggs" Morales a selection of backing tracks he had produced.[10] Morales enjoyed the tracks and sent them to Eminem, who wanted to take a different approach for Recovery, his seventh studio album.[10] The rapper first listened to the B.o.B and Hayley Williams song "Airplanes", to which he later recorded a sequel.[10] When he asked Alex da Kid for more tracks, the producer played "Love the Way You Lie". Eminem chose it and told his manager Paul Rosenberg that he wanted to collaborate with Barbadian singer Rihanna.[10] He told Paris radio station Skyrock FM that he had chosen to work with her because she was ideal for the part.[11]
Rosenberg sent the track to Rihanna, who accepted Eminem's request.[10] Eminem then wrote the rapped verses.[9] Back in February 2009, Rihanna had been assaulted by American singer Chris Brown and their relationship had subsequently ended.[12] She joined the collaboration because she could relate to the song's theme as both she and Eminem had experienced domestic violence on "different ends of the table".[13][14] Describing "Love the Way You Lie" as a unique and realistic record,[13][15] the singer labeled the lyrics in an interview for Access Hollywood as beautiful, deep and intense.[14] She added that the song "broke down the cycle of domestic violence" because only a small number of people had insight on such a topic.[15]

Recording sessions were held at Effigy Studios in Ferndale, Michigan, where Mike Strange recorded and mixed his vocals.[16] Strange's brother Joe engineered the track.[16] The sessions were finished in two days.[17] Alex da Kid was absent.[10] Strange edited the vocals with D-Verb—a reverberation software—and an Extra Long Delay plug-in. Strange preferred making very few changes, but used board compression and equalization (EQ) on "Love the Way You Lie".[1] Two to three weeks after the recording, Alex da Kid returned to help mix and master the track.[10] Strange used the Bricasti and Eventide Reverb 2016 mixing tools for brighter reverberation.[1]
On most Eminem songs, Detroit musician Luis Resto adds to the musical arrangement, but did not contribute to "Love the Way You Lie". According to Strange, "Everything we needed was already in the track, apart from the vocals." [1] Alex da Kid had wanted to replace the acoustic guitar on the demo, but Eminem liked it.[2] Strange used Waves RVerb and REQ equalization on the main kick track and used a MaxxBass plug-in on two others. He used the console equalization and compression almost exclusively.Strange said, "it was simply a matter of trying to match and then to improve on the demo [Alex da Kid had] sent us."[1]
Rihanna's recording sessions were at Sun Studios in Dublin. Marcos Tovar mixed her vocals, which were engineered by Spike Lindsey and mastered from Detroit over the Internet.[10][16] American songwriter Makeba Riddick provided additional vocal production.[16] SSL EQ, compression and reverberation were added but the vocal balance was left unchanged. Strange assumed that Rihanna had recorded her vocals to her satisfaction and thus major changes on the seven stereo vocal tracks were not needed.[1]
"Love the Way You Lie" is a midtempo hip hop song that runs for 4:23 (4 minutes, 23 seconds).[8][18][19] Critics Gil Kaufman, Mayer Nissem and Kyle Anderson deemed the song a ballad.[20][21][22] Writing for Entertainment Weekly, Anderson likened its "slow-burning" composition to that of British singer Adele's 2011 single "Someone Like You".[20] The lyrics are mainly about two people who want to end their abusive relationship despite loving each other.[23] According to the sheet music published by Universal Music Publishing Group, it is in the key of G minor with a 4/4 time signature and a tempo of 84 beats per minute.[24] The vocal range spans from B♭3 to D5.[24] "Love the Way You Lie" opens as Rihanna sings the pop refrain over a piano:[22][25]

The hook is based on a Gm–E♭(add2)–B♭–F/A chord progression.[24] According to Fraser McAlphine of BBC and The New York Times' David Brownie, Rihanna feels confined "in a cell of [her] own creation" and her voice, having no vibrato, shows grief and regret.[23][26] After her part, Eminem "zap[s] into" the rap:[22] "I can't tell you what it really is/ I can only tell you what it feels like."[25] The song switches to a Gm–E♭(add2)B♭–Fsus/A chord progression in the verses,[24] in which lyrically, Eminem regrets an end to an abusive, failed relationship, describing mutual violence and expressing both fondness and anger.[27][28] The two artists portray personae in a romantic relationship when Eminem responds to Rihanna by concluding the verse: "I laid hands on her. I'll never stoop so low again/ I guess I don't know my own strength."[23] Rihanna returns each time to sing the chorus,[22] which is backed by an electric guitar and a piano.[2]
An acoustic guitar,[2] pounding drums and squealing violins play in Eminem's verses.[29] As the track progresses, the lyrics transition from discussing the positive aspects of love to describing negative and violent events.[28] Jayson Rodriguez of MTV News found emotion and power in the rap and said that in the second verse, Eminem accepts the outcome after initially feeling sorry, as the rapper admits, "Yesterday is over, it's a different day."[27] However, his frustration increases as the song progresses,[25] rapping that two different personalities can clash and cause devastation: "maybe that's what happens when a tornado meets a volcano".[23] Eventually, the love–hate relationship worsens and domestic violence occurs.[30] Eminem admits to lying about promises he initially makes and says late in the song, "If she ever tries to fuckin' leave me again, I'ma tie her to the bed and set this house on fire."[28]
Journalists and experts have variously interpreted the song's message. According to Anderson, writing for MTV News, it carries a dark theme.[31] Editors of The A.V. Club compared "Love the Way You Lie" with earlier songs by Eminem that reference his ex-wife Kimberly Scott—"Kim" and "'97 Bonnie & Clyde".[32] They wrote that "Love the Way You Lie" finds him more tempered when discussing a "mutually destructive relationship".[32] Similarly Sady Doyle of The Atlantic said that Eminem "turns the anger and accusations toward himself" and even confesses to abusing Scott.[33] Allie Townsend of Time magazine, Jocelyn Noveck of The Associated Press and other writers suggested that the previous relationships of both artists influence the song.[28][34]
Eric Hayden of The Atlantic Wire interpreted the message as influenced possibly by Rihanna's relationship with Brown; he added that the lyrics discuss issues of an alcoholic couple.[35]However, in an NPR article that discussed the controversy surrounding hip hop duets, writer Maura Johnston interpreted the lyrics differently, suggesting that they portray Rihanna as the subject of Eminem's violence.[36] According to Marjorie Gilberg, executive director of Break the Cycle, a group against teenage violence, "Love the Way You Lie" describes the myths of domestic violence.[28] He believed that because popular culture usually depicts what is socially acceptable, people may more easily accept such violence. Gilberg argued that the victim is often accused of being as bad as the partner and that he or she really wants to be loved rather than being abused.[28]
On May 27, 2011, Eminem revealed "Love the Way You Lie" with the rest of the Recovery tracks,[37] which was released on June 21, 2010.[38] "Love the Way You Lie" was distributed by Interscope-Geffen-A&M, following an Internet leak on June 8, 2010.[27][39] Polydor Records released a CD single in the United Kingdom on August 9, 2010.[40] Interscope Records released the single in the United States on August 17 and in Germany on August 20, 2011.[41][42] Alex da Kid told Billboard that he was not surprised by its success, further praising Rihanna's contribution.[17] "Love the Way You Lie" received favorable reviews from most critics. A writer for Rap-Up listed "Love the Way You Lie" alongside "Talkin' 2 Myself", "Not Afraid" and "No Love" as one the four best tracks from the album.[43] The Atlantic's Doyle and The New York Times writer Jon Caramanica labeled the song respectively among Eminem's most affecting tracks and "one of the album's most engaging songs".[33][44] According to Caramanica, it shows that Eminem can assess issues from the perspective of both sexes.[44] Nick Levine of Digital Spy and McAlphine of BBC both gave the song four stars out of a possible five, commending its realistic theme and suggesting that the lyrics may pertain to the artists' past relationships.[23][45] McAlphine wrote that Eminem understands and discusses the topic with accuracy and Rihanna's involvement to represent the opposite side of the relationship shows "proper storytelling" and "sends a message" due to her breakup with Brown.[23] Winston Robbins of music website Consequence of Sound called the song raw and emotional, attributing its power to Rihanna's past abusive relationship and its theme.[46] MTV's Rodriguez said that it echoes content from Eminem's previous albums, but finds him sober and more mature.[47] He suggested that the lyrics indirectly refer to Eminem's past relationship with Scott and the track is his closest approach to a love song.[27]
Rihanna's addition and the song's production were received favorably. Kyle Anderson of MTV News said that the song showcased Eminem's "most intense rhymes about his tumultuous relationships with women" and Rihanna's emotional, but enjoyable part.[31] Houston Chronicle pop music critic Joey Guerra stated that the song brought a "sandpaper and silk sheen" to Rihanna.[48] Michael Menachem of Billboard praised Rihanna's "exquisitely melodic and surprisingly hopeful" vocal performance and "Eminem's dark, introspective" rapping."[19] He commended the production, noting the percussion and Alex da Kid's abilty to give classical arrangement a more mainstream touch.[19] On the critical side, The Daily Telegraph's Jenny McCartney dismissed Rihanna's metaphors in the chorus and opined that the song's theme was over-hyped.[49] She disagreed with the critical praise, arguing that there are more important reasons behind an abusive relationship than sexual and emotional pleasure, such as family and financial issues.[49]
"Love the Way You Lie" ranked in the best-of lists of various publications. Time's Suddath listed it at number five in the magazine's top 10 list and felt that its subject made it effective and powerful.[25] AOL Radio considered the song the best of 2010 hip hop music, regarding Eminem as imaginative and passionate.[50]It placed ninth on MTV News' top 25 list.[51] He attributed the song's success to its theme and relationship to the artists' past abusive relationships.[51] Montgomery concluded that "You cannot write a song any better than that, because that's how this kind of thing happens in real life."[51] New York Post listed the song at second place on its top 210 list and regarded it as a "comeback club anthem."[52] On April 26, 2011, Gabriel Alvarez of Complex magazine put it at the bottom of its 100 Best Eminem Songs list, writing that it is a love song in which Rihanna's voice is beautiful.[53]
The song reached #1 on many sales charts around the world. On July 2, 2011, "Love the Way You Lie" debuted at number 17 on the Swedish Singles Chart, on which 7 weeks later, it began a five-week run at the top.[54] The song entered the Australian Singles Chart at number 14 on July 4, 2010, rising to number 1 after 3 weeks, lasting there for 6 weeks and spending 38 weeks in total.[55] It first appeared on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 2 in the July 10, 2010, issue.[56] The single entered at number 1 on the US Digital Songs after selling 338,000 digital copies in its first week.[57] In the Digital Songs issue dated August 28, 2010, it regained the top position with weekly sales of 254,000 copies.[58] "Love the Way You Lie" began a 7-week run at the top of the Hot 100 to become Eminem's fourth and Rihanna's seventh number-1 US hit.[59][60][61] The single rose from number 13 to number 8 on the Billboard Pop Songs in its fourth consecutive week and became Eminem's ninth and Rihanna's fifteenth top-10 song on the chart.[62]
On the week of August 14, 2010, "Love the way You Lie" sold more than 300,000 digital copies and claimed Billboard's "Airplay Gainer" honor for 5 consecutive weeks.[63] It reached new peaks the same week on the Pop Songs and Radio Songs charts, both at number 2.[63] In the Billboard issue dated August 21, 2010, Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems recognized the single with the BDS Certified Award for 50,000 radio spins.[64] It topped the Pop Songs chart in the same issue,[65] giving Eminem his fourth number-1 hit on the chart and tying Rihanna with Mariah Carey, Beyoncé Knowles and Lady Gaga for the most Pop Songs chart-topping singles.[66][67] "Love the Way You Lie" later reached number 1 on the Radio Songs chart and peaked at number 23 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs.[68][69] The single became Eminem's first number-1 hit on the Rap Songs chart since "The Real Slim Shady".[70]
On July 4, 2010, the song entered the UK Singles and UK R&B charts at numbers 7 and 3 respectively.[71][72] Towards the end of the month it climbed to number 2 on the Singles Chart and to number 1 on the R&B Chart.[73][74] In October 2011 "Love the Way You Lie" became the 109th song to reach one million sales in the UK.[75] By the end of the year it had sold 854,000 copies in the UK without having reached the top spot, making it the biggest-selling song of 2010 in the UK.[76] On the Danish Singles Chart, the song first appeared at number 14 and rose to the top 6 weeks later.[77] It lasted 26 weeks, 8 of which were spent at number 1.[77] It charted in Canada for 35 weeks.[78] The song spent 4 weeks at number 1 in New Zealand and lasted from June 28 to November 22, 2010, with a re-appearance on December 6.[79] In Norway it held 4 weeks at number 1 out of a total of 21 weeks.[80]
"Love the Way You Lie" received a double-platinum certification in New Zealand that denoted 30,000 shipments to retailers.[81] It was the seventh-best-selling single of 2010 in the US, with sales of 4,245,000 copies.[82] The song was certified sextuple-platinum in Australia for 420,000 shipments.[83] It became South Korea's third-best-selling song in 2010 by a foreign artist with 1,200,653 downloads.[84] According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, it sold 9.3 million copies worldwide in 2010.[85] More than five million digital copies were sold before August 2011 and four months later, the song was certified as Eminem's best-selling single of all time.[86][87] As of February 2012, it had sold 1,020,253 copies in the UK.[88]

Megan Fox accepted a starring role in the video. Director Joseph Kahn said that she helped the video have a strong impact.
The music video for "Love the Way You Lie" was Eminem's third to be directed by American filmmaker Joseph Kahn.[89] Despite having planned to shoot a feature film and stop directing videos, he directed "Love the Way You Lie" because according to him, the song touched on an important topic.[90] Mikey Fresh of Vibe wrote that it was his best opportunity to direct a video for Eminem without the comedic themes of their previous collaborations.[91] For the video he considered English actor Dominic Monaghan as a co-star due to his versatility, which would help him play a dark role effectively.[92] He cast American actress Megan Fox, which Kahn had presumed would be almost impossible due to her popularity with directors.[91] But Fox, a fan, accepted the role without hesitation.[91]
Rosenberg gave Kahn 1 day. Kahn wrote a storyline that he said was not based on Eminem and Rihanna, taking 45 minutes to produce the full treatment.[91] Filming began with Eminem's and Rihanna's parts on July 21, 2010, in Los Angeles; Fox's and Monaghan's parts were shot at a later date.[91][93][94] Photos of Rihanna filming in front of a burning house leaked onto the Internet that day; Kahn, tweeted his request to paparazzi to "stop trying to ruin [his] shots, thank you."[95] The clip was produced by Kathy Angstadt and Maryann Tanedo of HSI Productions.[96] On July 24, 2010, Kahn tweeted that he had finished the shoot and the video would premiere in one week. The next day he confirmed the completion of the director's cut.[94] He commented for Vibe on the theme of the video and Fox's acting:
We wanted to make a specific story about two people—Meg and Dom—not a video that was representative of all couples or all domestic violence situations. I'm not saying that all couples fight this way. I just want people just to be able to identify with the characters and recognize that they've seen relationships like this where two people are together that are completely wrong for each other and things spiral out of control. ... Megan was the key to this video. ... I'll tell you as a director the reason why their scenes in the video feel so real is because in the moment they were real.[91]
Kahn said that Fox's involvement increased the video's impact.[91] Shortly before the its release, Eminem reported in a press statement: "Joseph and I worked pretty closely together to make sure we got this right".[98] According to him, the difficult topic resulted in a powerful video thanks to the participation of Rihanna, Fox and Monaghan.[98] Fox donated her appearance fee to the Soujourn House, a battered women's shelter.[99] On August 5, 2010, the video premiered on MTV at 9 pm ET as well as on music video website VEVO.[94][100]

The video opens with a close-up of Rihanna, singing in front of a burning house, as an interspersing scene shows fire on Fox' palms. Fox and Monaghan lie asleep, but the woman suddenly wakes up, while Eminem begins to rap in an empty cornfield. After the woman sees the name "Cindy" and a phone number written on her boyfriend's hand, she attacks him.[101] He tries to kiss her, but is spat on the face. She then attempts to leave him, but starts to fight again after she is brought back. The man slams her onto the wall and aims his fist at her, hitting through the drywall instead. After Rihanna sings again, the video flashes back to when the man and the woman first met "at a seedy dive bar next door" to a liquor store.[101][102]The man steals a bottle of vodka after they fall in love and kisses her on the rooftop.[103]
The video shifts back to the present, as the man apologizes and later drinks a glass of liquor. Rihanna sings, while the couple are reconciled. In another flashback, the man attacks someone who played pool with his girlfriend.[101] After the video returns once again to the present, Eminem joins Rihanna in front of the burning house and raps the final verse. The man follows his girlfriend, who walks away but locks the door to stop him from coming. In a different scene, she handles fire in her hands again and closes them to extinguish the flame. The couple, along with Eminem, are then engulfed by flames.[104] A scene shows them in front of the burning house. In the end the couple remain together and the video returns to the first frame, in which they sleep.[101][105]

The video was watched 6.6 million times in the first 24 hours after its upload to VEVO, breaking a YouTube record for the most hits in one day.[107] However, explicit and overt usage of imagery that suggested domestic violence caused an uproar.[108] On AOL Music's list of the "Top 10 Most Controversial Music Videos in Pop", "Love the Way You Lie" was listed at number five.[108] According to Fox News reporter Hollie McKay and the executive director of sexual assault and trauma resource center Day One—Stephanie Nilva—the video mainly raises "the topic of dating violence among young people" and teenagers.[106][109] Nilva praised the clip for accurate depiction of patterns in an abusive relationship and said that its potency came from Eminem's history of violence-themed songs and Brown's assault on Rihanna.[106]
Mariel Concepcion of Billboard said that the clip focused on the risks of domestic violence, which should be avoided before it is too late.[100] Peter Gicas of E! News noted that the two stars act violently and there is "combustible behavior the tune is hellbent on describing." Gicas contrasted the video with Kanye West's clip for "Power", which premiered the same night. He suggested viewers watch the calmer "Power" video if they are disturbed by "Love the Way You Lie"'s subject matter,[110] which Zoe Chace of NPR deemed graphic and sickening.[111] Rihanna's appearance in the video faced particular criticism. Daniel Kreps of Rolling Stone magazine called it "especially striking", noting her past relationship with Brown.[112] An editor from The Boston Globe commented that although the video was realistic, it hindered Rihanna's ability to set an example for women in abusive relationships.[105] National Organization for Women President Terry O'Neill stated that although it was not the singer's intention, she glorified domestic violence.[113]
Brittany Talarico of OK! magazine and other critics saw the video's message as significant to both artists.[103] Billy Johnson Jr. from Yahoo! Music said that Fox's portrayal switched between vulnerable and confrontational personalities, while Monaghan's character resembled Eminem.[114] Monaghan echoed Johnson's sentiments of the couple as a representation of Eminem and Scott in an interview for MTV.[15] Although Kahn understood why viewers might think the video had been influenced by Eminem's and Rihanna's relationships, he asked viewers to pay closer attention and realize that this is untrue. According to him, the cast and crew had been conscious about such personal matters while Fox's and Monaghan's characters had been conceived to only be significant to each other.[115]
Despite criticizing the violent theme, reviewers praised the acting. A writer for Rap-Up considered it a realistic clip in which "art imitates life".[116] The Wall Street Journal critic Jozen Cummings suggested that the video was more appropriate "for the big screen than the TV screen" due to the involvement of film stars Fox and Monaghan.[104] New York Post's Jarett Wieselman wrote that they play their roles perfectly and helped make the video powerful.[117] Mikey Fresh of Vibe said that Fox's natural reaction when Monaghan punches through the drywall and almost hits her is an "incredible act of vulnerability".[91] Entertainment Weekly's Whitney Pastorek found the violent acting sexually appealing while Fox and Monaghan look "gorgeous".[118] Willa Paskin of New York magazine noted the use of sepia toning in the burning-house scenes and said that the cast's appeal leaves viewers "hypnotized".[119] Matthew Wilkening of AOL Radio commented that the video leaves viewers deciding "if it's a good thing or a bad thing that the pair always end up reconciling."[120] L Magazine's Benjamin Sutton likened the scene in which the characters burst into flames to Chris Bradley, whom Monaghan portrayed in the 2009 action film X-Men Origins: Wolverine.[121]
On June 15, 2010, Eminem and Rihanna performed "Love the Way You Lie" at Los Angeles's Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010 (E3 2010).[122] Before the song started, Eminem told the crowd, "Before I get into this next song, I wanna bring out a very special guest", inviting Rihanna to the stage while drummer Travis Barker and D12 hypeman Mr. Porter performed with him.[122] Eminem did "Love the Way You Lie" at the T in the Park festival on July 10, 2010, in Scotland,[123] dedicating it to "everybody who'[d] been in a fucked-up relationship."[123]
Eminem performed the song at Ireland's Oxegen 2010 festival on July 11, 2010.[124] James Hendicott from State wrote that Eminem's personality "fill[ed] the stage" and his vocals were sharp and packed "plenty of punch".[125] However, he criticized the lack of innovation and involvement, as well as Rihanna's absence.[125] Eamon Sweeney from Irish Independent called the live performance only "mildly impressive".[126] On July 21, 2010, the rapper made a surprise appearance on Rihanna's Last Girl on Earth Tour to perform at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.[93] He performed with Rihanna at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards and was voted the best performer of the ceremony, earning 34 percent of votes in an MTV poll.[127][128] Rihanna had told fans initially that she would be absent at the performance, but appeared anyway.[129] Suddath of Time called the performance dull.[130]
"Love the Way You Lie" was performed without Rihanna at the 2011 Bonnaroo Music Festival in front of an audience of almost 80,000 people.[131][132] Eminem thanked the audience for supporting him during his career "and not giving up on me."[133] MTV News' Montgomery wrote that Eminem's "sheer tenacity with which he attacked" was his strength.[131] Patrick Doyle of Rolling Stone praised the performance and felt that Eminem delivered a triumphal act by "constantly bouncing across the stage" and singing energetically.[133] The rapper performed "Love the Way You Lie" on the second day of Chicago's annual Lollapalooza festival on August 6, 2011, once again accompanied only by Porter.[134] Piet Levy of USA Today newspaper named the performance a "tragic stunner" as members of the audience sang the chorus to compensate for Rihanna's absence.[134][135] Katie Hasty of HitFix added that it displayed equality between both sexes.[136]
On August 20, 2011, Rihanna joined Eminem in Staffordshire to perform the song on the first day of V2011 (V Festival).[137] James Lachno of The Daily Telegraph considered it an "affecting" rendition.[138] The Guardian called their performance thrilling and British newspaper Metro called it the best part of the evening.[139][140] Eminem closed the festival on the night of August 21 in Chelmsford, Essex, in front of an audience of 120,000 people.[141] A staff reporter from International Business Times thought that Eminem and Rihanna's duet highlighted the evening's show.[142] Eminem earned £1 million (US$1.6 million) each night he performed and Rihanna earned £500,000 (US$788,950) each night, giving V2011 the record for the most expensive V Festival event in history.[143] Eminem embarked on an Australian tour on December 1–2, 2011.[144] "Love the Way You Lie" was on his set list at the Docklands Stadium in Melbourne, on day one.[145] Cameron Adams of Herald Sun noted the poor sound during the first 20 minutes of the performance, but commented that Eminem was as "happy to be back on stage as the fans were to see him back up there."[145] He performed at the Sydney Football Stadium the next day. Carlie Walker of Byron Shire News said that his performance of the song "brought the crowd to life."[146]
Musicians and bands have performed and recorded cover versions and remixes of "Love the Way You Lie". Country music group The Band Perry performed the song at the June 2010 CMT Music Awards.[147] Two months later Taylor Momsen, lead singer of American rock band The Pretty Reckless, performed a cover version of "Love the Way You Lie" for BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, as part of a mashup with the song "Islands" by English pop band The xx.[148][149] A guitarist for the band assisted her in the performance, as she began with a section of "Islands" and then transitioned into the chorus of "Love the Way You Lie".[150] Momsen had caused controversy after she had told Spin magazine that "People think pop is rock and the lines are getting blurred. Now Rihanna's wearing fuckin' leather jackets and it's really annoying."[148] Ann Lee of Metro was uncertain why Taylor would perform the song after having "slat[ed]" her, but deemed the cover "pretty good" nonetheless.[151] Momsen later told BBC Radio 1 that she respects Rihanna.[148]
British musician Cher Lloyd performed the song in the final five of The X Factor UK's seventh season.[152][153] A writer from The Sun called the performance "stripped-back" and "without any of her usual stage gimmicks."[154] Mernie Gilmore of Daily Express commented that the song is "a duet for a reason" when Lloyd performed both Eminem's and Rihanna's parts.[152] In 2010 Russian-American guitarist Alex Feather Akimov and Rudiger released "Love The Way You Lie (Heavy Remix)", a recording that was recognized by Billboard.biz (Web Trends).[155] American post-hardcore band A Skylit Drive recorded a cover of the single for Punk Goes Pop 4, the 2011 release of the Punk Goes... series.[156]

On November 3, 2010, an alternate version of "Love the Way You Lie", titled "Love the Way You Lie (Part II)", leaked on the Internet.[157] Rihanna was as the lead vocalist and Eminem was a featured guest. The song mainly views matters from the female perspective.[158] The sequel is based on the demo written and recorded by Grey.[7] Having initially opposed to recording a sequel, Rihanna had thought "the original couldn't be beaten", but later agreed to record it.[159] She said that the sequel had less production, as a piano and drums accompany the artists.[159] It became the 11th and final track on her 2010 studio album Loud.[160] The demo track by Grey appears on her extended play The Buried Sessions of Skylar Grey, which was released on January 17, 2012.[161]
BBC Online reviewed the sequel positively, saying, "Eminem's verse exud[es] the kind of volatile, simmering menace that got everyone so excited about him in the first place. But it is Rihanna's vocal—at once commanding, soulful and vulnerable—that anchors the song."[162] The song peaked at number 19 on the Canadian Hot 100 and lasted on the chart for eight weeks.[163][164] Rihanna performed a short medley that includes "Love the Way You Lie (Part II)", "What's My Name?" and "Only Girl (In the World)" at the American Music Awards of 2010.[165] Another medley, composed of "Love the Way You Lie (Part II)" and "I Need a Doctor", was performed at the 53rd Grammy Awards.[166]
