www.GopherSports.com Freshman Philip Nelson made the most of his first home start as a Gopher, throwing three touchdown passes in the first half as Minnesota moved to 5-3 on the season with a 44-28 victory over Purdue. Nelson passed for 246 yards while going 15-22 through the air, including two touchdown throws to AJ Barker and another to Derrick Engel. The defense also came up big, picking up three sacks and a Michael Carter 43 yard interception return for a touchdown. Carter tied a school record with six pass breakups, including three on one drive. The win was Minnesota's most lopsided conference victory since a 63-26 showing against Indiana in 2006. The Gophers host Michigan next weekend, looking to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2009.
