Madison High School (Houston, Texas)

James Madison High School is a public High School located at 13719 White Heather Drive in the Hiram Clarke area of Houston, Texas, United States. The school serves grades 9 through 12 and is part of the Houston Independent School District. The school is named after James Madison, a former President of the United States.

Madison contains HISD's magnet program for Space and Meteorological Sciences; the program is known as the High School for Meteorology & Space Science.

History

James Madison Junior-Senior High School was opened on September 8, 1965. In February 1968, Dick Dowling Junior High School (now Dowling Middle School) was opened and James Madison became a high school that temporarily taught 9th graders for that first year. By the next year, it was for grades 10 through 12.

In 1974 Carrie Rochon McAfee became the principal of Madison and worked there for 15 years. She was the first woman to become the principal of a traditional public high school in Texas. The Madison community knows her as "Marlin Mama."

Madison High School (North Carolina)

Madison High School is a school located in Marshall NC. The Assistant principal is Gordon Hale and Principal is Steve Bowlin.

Madison High School was opened in the fall of 1974. The schools were combined in name only in 1974. It consolidated the high schools previously located at Hot Springs, Laurel, Mars Hill, Marshall, and Spring Creek. Class of 74 never walked the halls of Madison High. Class of 75 was the class to break it in. The school is located just off the By-Pass at Marshall.

Location

Madison High and MCS Central Office are located on 54 acres of land owned by the Madison County Board of Education. Besides the main building we have ROTC classroom, Alternative School. Masonry classroom and shop and the football stadium along with a track and field house and a softball field located on the property. Our Baseball/softball fields are located on other properties.

In most jurisdictions, secondary education in the United States refers to the last four years of statutory formal education (grade nine through grade twelve) either at high school or split between a final year of 'junior high school' and three in high school.

History

The United States historically had a demand for general skills rather than specific training/apprenticeships. High school enrollment increased when schools at this level became free, laws required children to attend until a certain age, and it was believed that every American student had the opportunity to participate regardless of their ability.

In 1892, in response to many competing academic philosophies being promoted at the time, a working group of educators, known as the "Committee of Ten" was established by the National Education Association. It recommended twelve years of instruction, consisting of eight years of elementary education followed by four years of high school. Rejecting suggestions that high schools should divide students into college-bound and working-trades groups from the start, and in some cases also by race or ethnic background, they unanimously recommended that "every subject which is taught at all in a secondary school should be taught in the same way and to the same extent to every pupil so long as he pursues it, no matter what the probable destination of the pupil may be, or at what point his education is to cease."

High School (1940 film)

High School is a 1940 American drama film directed by George Nichols Jr. and written by Jack Jungmeyer, Edith Skouras and Harold Tarshis. The film stars Jane Withers, Joe Brown Jr., Paul Harvey, Lloyd Corrigan, Cliff Edwards and Claire Du Brey. The film was released on January 26, 1940, by 20th Century Fox.

High School (1968 film)

High School is a 1968 American documentary film directed by Frederick Wiseman that shows a typical day for a group of students at Northeast High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was one of the first direct cinema (or cinéma vérité) documentaries. It was shot over five weeks in March and April 1968. The film was not shown in Philadelphia at the time of its release, due to Wiseman's concerns over what he called "vague talk" of a lawsuit.

The film was released in October 1968 by Wiseman's distribution company, Zipporah Films. High School has been aired on PBS Television. Wiseman distributes his work (DVDs and 16mm prints) through Zipporah Films, which rents them to high schools, colleges, and libraries on a five-year long-term lease. High School was selected in 1991 for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Wiseman made a second documentary on high school, High School II, based on Central Park East Secondary School in New York City, released in 1994.

The High School Musical franchise consists of three Disney musical romantic comedy-drama films directed by Kenny Ortega and created by Peter Barsocchini. It stars Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu, and Monique Coleman. The original film was released simply as a Disney Channel Original Movie, but after its huge success, it was followed by a television sequel. The third film received a theatrical release. Tisdale and Grabeel reprised their roles as Sharpay and Ryan Evans in a spin-off on the series titled Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure, it was a direct to video film. High School Musical was released on January 20, 2006 as a Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM), and is the most successful DCOM ever produced. The film was Disney Channel's most watched DCOM in 2006, with 7.7 million viewers for its premiere broadcast in the US and 789,000 viewers for its UK premiere. It was the first DCOM ever to be broadcast by BBC on December 29, 2006, and has been viewed by over 225 million people worldwide. The first film's leads were Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel, who sang most of the songs.
