Aksara Brahmi berasal dari India. Aksara ini tergolong dalam sistem tulisan Abugida. Aksara ini juga tersebar ke Asia Selatan dan Asia Tenggara seiring dengan penyebaran agama Hindu dan Buddha.
Sejarah:
Aksara ini bermula pada abad ketiga sebelum masihi semasa pemerintahan Ashoka, iaitu raja kepada dinasti Maurya. Aksara ini digunakan dalam kitab suci agama Hindu dan Buddha. Pada ketika itu, aksara Brahmi tidak mempunyai vokal. Vokal wujud setelah aksara ini berevolusi kepada beberapa sistem tulisan yang lain mengikut bahasa dan daerah masing-masing.
Maka jangan hairanlah jika tulisan Thai dan Tamil seakan-akan sama kerana kedua-dua tulisan itu berasal dari sistem tulisan yang sama, iaitu aksara Brahmi.

Pernahkan sistem tulisan ini digunakan dalam Bahasa Melayu?:
Ya. Sebelum kedatangan tulisan Jawi, Bahasa Melayu menggunakan tulisan Pallava, Rejang dan Rencong. Skrip Rejang dan Rencong digunakan di Sumatra, manakala skrip Pallava digunakan di semenanjung Tanah Melayu.
Kesimpulan:
Skrip Brahmi ialah sistem tulisan yang berpengaruh di dunia selain skrip Latin, Arab dan Cyrillic. Oleh itu, terdapat persamaan pada tulisan Thai dan Tamil kerana kedua-dua tulisan itu berasal dari sistem tulisan yang sama.

A 2000-year old Indian script was decoded and a fascinating new chapter was added to Indian History. India learnt about Emperor Ashoka, one of the greatest kings to have ever ruled over the subcontinent. This is the story of an ancient king who carved his edicts on rock faces and stone pillars across India. It is the story of an Englishman named James Prinsep, who was determined to read what these ancient inscriptions said. And this is the story of the decoding of Brahmi - the oldest readable Indian script and the mother script of most modern Indian scripts.

Brahmic scripts
The Brahmic scripts are a family of abugida writing systems. They are used throughout South Asia, Southeast Asia and parts East Asia, and are descended from the Brāhmī script of ancient India. They are used by languages of several language families: Indo-European, Dravidian, Tibeto-Burman, Mongolic, Austroasiatic, Austronesian, Turkic, Tai. They were also the source of the dictionary order of Japanese kana.
History
Brahmic scripts are descended from the Brahmi script. Brahmi is clearly attested from the 3rd century BC during the reign of Ashoka, who used the script for imperial edicts, but there are some claims of earlier epigraphy found on pottery in South India and Sri Lanka. The most reliable of these were short Brahmi inscriptions dated to the 4th century BC and published by Coningham et al., but scattered press reports have claimed both dates as early as the 6th century BC and that the characters are identifiably Tamil Brahmi, though these latter claims do not appear to have been published academically. Northern Brahmi gave rise to the Gupta script during the Gupta period, which in turn diversified into a number of cursives during the Middle Ages, including Siddham, Sharada and Nagari.

A 2000-year old Indian script was decoded and a fascinating new chapter was added to Indian History. India learnt about Emperor Ashoka, one of the greatest kings to have ever ruled over the subcontinent. This is the story of an ancient king who carved his edicts on rock faces and stone pillars across India. It is the story of an Englishman named James Prinsep, who was determined to read what these ancient inscriptions said. And this is the story of the decoding of Brahmi - the oldest readable Indian script and the mother script of most modern Indian scripts.

The festival is based on the theme of ‘Diversity of World’s Writing Systems”, and on the ideals of the World Script Institute. The event has two parts: academic conferences and a festival. The festival will be held on October 24th to November 2nd in Downtown Seoul.

Aksara Brahmi berasal dari India. Aksara ini tergolong dalam sistem tulisan Abugida. Aksara ini juga tersebar ke Asia Selatan dan Asia Tenggara seiring dengan penyebaran agama Hindu dan Buddha.
Sejarah:
Aksara ini bermula pada abad ketiga sebelum masihi semasa pemerintahan Ashoka, iaitu raja kepada dinasti Maurya. Aksara ini digunakan dalam kitab suci agama Hindu dan Buddha. Pada ketika itu, aksara Brahmi tidak mempunyai vokal. Vokal wujud setelah aksara ini berevolusi kepada beberapa sistem tulisan yang lain mengikut bahasa dan daerah masing-masing.
Maka jangan hairanlah jika tulisan Thai dan Tamil seakan-akan sama kerana kedua-dua tulisan itu berasal dari sistem tulisan yang sama, iaitu aksara Brahmi.

Pernahkan sistem tulisan ini digunakan dalam Bahasa Melayu?:
Ya. Sebelum kedatangan tulisan Jawi, Bahasa Melayu menggunakan tulisan Pallava, Rejang dan Rencong. Skrip Rejang dan Rencong digunakan di Sumatra, manakala skrip Pallava digunakan di semenanjung Tanah Melayu.
Kesimpulan:
Skrip Brahmi ialah sistem tulisan yang berpengaruh di dunia selain skrip Latin, Arab dan Cyrillic. Oleh itu, terdapat persamaan pada tulisan Thai dan Tamil kerana kedua-dua tulisan itu berasal dari sistem tulisan yang sama.

A 2000-year old Indian script was decoded and a fascinating new chapter was added to Indian History. India learnt about Emperor Ashoka, one of the greatest kings to have ever ruled over the subcontinent. This is the story of an ancient king who carved his edicts on rock faces and stone pillars across India. It is the story of an Englishman named James Prinsep, who was determined to read what these ancient inscriptions said. And this is the story of the decoding of Brahmi - the oldest readable Indian script and the mother script of most modern Indian scripts.

Brahmic scripts
The Brahmic scripts are a family of abugida writing systems. They are used throughout South Asia, Southeast Asia and parts East Asia, and are descended from the Brāhmī script of ancient India. They are used by languages of several language families: Indo-European, Dravidian, Tibeto-Burman, Mongolic, Austroasiatic, Austronesian, Turkic, Tai. They were also the source of the dictionary order of Japanese kana.
History
Brahmic scripts are descended from the Brahmi script. Brahmi is clearly attested from the 3rd century BC during the reign of Ashoka, who used the script for imperial edicts, but there are some claims of earlier epigraphy found on pottery in South India and Sri Lanka. The most reliable of these were short Brahmi inscriptions dated to the 4th century BC and published by Coningham et al., but scattered press reports have claimed both dates as early as the 6th century BC and that the characters are identifiably Tamil Brahmi, though these latter claims do not appear to have been published academically. Northern Brahmi gave rise to the Gupta script during the Gupta period, which in turn diversified into a number of cursives during the Middle Ages, including Siddham, Sharada and Nagari.
