Are Mashups the End of Music Genres As We Know Them? | Idea Channel | PBS
Some of the best things to be found on the internet are music mashups! It's a strangely pleasing experience to listen to totally unrelated artists commingling on the same music track. Mashups are awesome because they break genre expectations, which makes us think: why have genres at all? Nowadays there's so much cross-pollination in music and art, creating more and more sub-genres, that the larger genre categories are becoming a useless relic.
New Idea Channel episodes now every Wednesday!!!

So apparently no one on YouTube has ever done this as far as I know, here's my attempt at mixing as many genres as possible into a coherent piece of music. =)

UPDATE: Many people have asked this so to clear things up:
This song is 100% original.
However, people have noted out the following:
- Melodeath part sounds like "Unholy Confessions" by Avenged Sevenfold
- Death Metal part sounds like something by Testament
- Folk metal part sounds like "Dialogue With The Stars" by In Flames
So here's a few recommendations for you if you liked this one.
Also, check out my other songs on my channel.

Multi-Genre Music Mashup
I'm currently pursuing my masters in music technology at school, and one project we were required to do was "plunderphonics" (basically a mashup of various songs from different artists). I had a lot of fun with this project and I think it turned out great for my first time using Pro Tools 9. So what happens when you mix Periphery, Deadmau5, Aesop Rock, All American Rejects, Linkin Park, Falling Up, Eric Whitacre, Protest the Hero and Fort Minor? Press play to find out!

Car Music Genre Can Impact Accident Risk
Researchers find that music genre can impact driver safety.
Ok, so we all like to listen to our favorite tunes when driving. But did you know that the type of music playing in the car can influence your chances of getting into an accident.
Researchers at London Metropolitan University have analyzed information from an experiment done by confused.com, an insurance comparison website.
That test involved examining the driving skills of four males and four females, who had to cruise hundreds of miles while listening to different genres of music.
What they discovered was surprising. A psychologist involved with the study states "Music that is noisy, upbeat and increases your heart rate is a deadly mix. Fast beats can cause excitement and arousal that can lead people to concentrate more on the music than on the road."
The correlation between music and driving can potentially be a hazard. Fast beat tunes were seen to cause drivers to increase their speeds.
According to the study, the best tempo for driving music is 60 to 80 beats per minute. Soft rock songs from artists like Aerosmith, Elton John and Coldplay were said to be among the safest.
The song 'Hey Mama' by The Black Eyed Peas was discovered to be the most dangerous.
What do you listen to in the car?

Zola music genre test.
Just a bit of fun for the family but also a few folks that asked me to throw something up on the ' ol tube 'of my daughter Zola getting down on some music.
We're not closed minded enough to listen to one genre of music in our household so everyone gets a taste of everything all the time .
Seems my daughter is stimulated by a little bit of everything and I think you will see which genres she digs the most.
But the important thing is she gets a healthy dose of everything and hears music everyday. That way she can (hopefully) grow up with choices to decide what she likes irrespective of her being musical or not..
I also spend time with Zola listening, selecting and letting her handle the portable turntable here(of course turntable etiquette is important! ) but also showing her that music is also a fun and physical thing and that watching a slice of vinyl spin around can be quite mesmerizing is a pretty cool thing.
Kids love to touch and explore and get there hands on things and personally I've found a turntable with a bunch of old beaten up 45s for her to play with and dance to is far more enchanting than and Ipod.
The difference I found when I let her play with both is that sure the ipod is interesting and has little screen and bright lights and you can swipe away with your fingers , but when she sees and hears it on the turntable she actually wants to hear the WHOLE song and its like she's paying more attention.
If lift the needle in the middle of a song ? Woah ! Not happy.
Perhaps If I have some more time in my life to waste I'll throw another video up of different genres but I dont want to get into a ' whats best for our kids and end up making weird tutorials of how kids should dance, and when should they buy their first record type of senario ..
But I would watch that video if it was around .
Alright ave a laugh enjoy and remember don't share needles.

Blur the lines between dream state and reality, as you perceive the world through the minds of many. Into the Mind contemplates the experiences passed between mentors and peers to paint a philosophical portrait of human kind. What drives us to overcome challenge? How do we justify risk? What forces are at the core of a mountain addiction? Unique athlete segments over a multitude of mountain sport genres depict the connectivity of Earth, and window into never seen before moments. Explore how we begin our perception of self, construct the foundations of confidence, and are ultimately led up the path of self-actualization.
As Buddha once said, “The mind is everything. What you think you become.”
Into The Mind is about becoming.

I Need Nothing - a nearly useless odyssey
Repositories of stories and its enriching emotions, the covers, that accomodate the existing panoply of musical genres, are the motto for this exibition. The focus is made on album covers that often conquer our memory even when music slightly reached our ears. Major graphic disasters or deified, unduly ignored or zeitgeists, covers provide listening with a touch and an image, with the act of collection and share. From cover to cover, going thru all the stories (and histories), we wrote a new one to the sound of a song that repeats: I need nothing, I’ve everything I need.
‘I need nothing’ is an original concept from Cãoceito + Burdman, shot by Moopie. Its premier happens as a tangential project of EXD’11.
‘Useless’ - the motto of biennial’s current edition - was the kick-off, and the thought on how album covers (vinyls, in this case) enable people to ‘listen with the eyes’ the main goal of the project. At a time where digital audio files dominate but where traditional mediums still seduce fans, the album covers, being useless for some, stay relevant for others.
In this odyssey we benefited from the help of a set of people which, directly or not, live by the rhythm of the music they buy, download, share or create. The Parenthetical Girls lent music (Doughnut) to the video; Moopie shot the video; Matéria Prima yielded the venue in Lisbon; designers/illustrators/artists - Ariana Couvinha, Carla Almeida, Daniel Marques, Diogo Carvalho, Júlio Dolbeth, Hugo Oliveira, Manuel F. Sousa, Mariana Fernandes, Miguel Feraso Cabral, Miguel Vale, Nuno Aguiar, Paulo Lourenço, Paulo Serra, Pedro Naves, Rodrigo Burdman, Rui Vitorino Santos e Samir Mesquita - provided the bulk of over 200 covers, which populate the video and embody the central element of the project, and yet all others who enriched the discussion with surprising texts.

The blues is generally a freeform style that will not make much sense when explained in terms of traditional music theory. It is played using lots of diminished thirds, fifths and sevenths from the major scale, giving the music its characteristic "blues" sound. These notes will be discussed further in the section on Blues Scales.
Blues musicians rely heavily on improvisation. This is evident in the numerous instrumental sections in many blues pieces. A musician can go about improvising solos over blues progressions or multiple musicians can alternate every few bars or so. Instrumental fills are also commonly played at the end of a sung line.
