Hundreds stage anti-government protest in main square 2011 News
Hundreds of Jordanians set up a protest camp in a main square in the capital on Thursday to press demands for the ouster of the prime minister and wider public freedoms. The 500 protesters appeared to be mostly university students or unemployed graduates unaffiliated with any political party. Many said they met through Facebook last month to launch a group called the Jordanian Youth Movement. Group spokesman Ziad al-Khawaldeh said protesters would remain outdoors until Prime Minister Marouf al-Bakhit departs. Other demands include dissolving what is widely seen as a docile parliament dismantling the largely feared intelligence department and giving greater powers to the people. The group changed its name Thursday to Youth of March 24 - marking what members said was the start of an open-ended demonstration. Protesters waved banners that called for a new Jordan clean of corruption and corrupt officials. Intelligence Department we want your hands off politics they chanted. Al-Khawaldeh said two protesters were detained for questioning but that he did not know the reason. While one of them was released hours later the other remains in detention he said. Police officials were not immediately available for comment. Al-Khawaldeh said the protesters want Prime Minister Marouf al-Bakhit to be instantly replaced with a liberal government that would quickly implement reforms. Al-Bakhit a former army general is widely regarded as a tough military officer incapable of introducing changes demanded by protesters. Those reforms include an election law replacing a one seen as favouring the king s loyalists and blamed for producing a docile parliament the only elected body in Jordan s government. Jordan s opposition also want to strip the king of some of his powers specifically in appointing the prime minister. Instead they want the premier to be elected by a popular vote. Protesters also said they want parliament to be dissolved and new elections to be held under a new election law giving more proportional representation to Jordanians and reducing the number of votes in districts inhabited by tribesmen who form the bedrock of support for the king. In a separate protest about 100 pro-government loyalists stood near the youth waving portraits of the king and chanting Our lives and souls we sacrifice for you King Abdullah Police formed lines to separate the protesters. No clashes were reported.- published: 04 Nov 2013

Dozens wounded in clashes at anti-government protest 2011 News
Protesters and supporters of Jordan s king clashed in the capital of Amman late on Thursday and about 35 people were hurt in one of the most violent incidents in three months of demonstrations. About 2-thousand Jordanians demanding government reforms joined an encampment at a central square. They were attacked by about 300 supporters of King Abdullah II who threw rocks at the demonstrators injuring some of them. Leftist groups joined youth who demonstrated through the day to press demands for the ouster of the prime minister and for wider public freedoms. Many said they met through Facebook last month to launch a group called the Jordanian Youth Movement. Before the violence group spokesman Ziad al-Khawaldeh said protesters would remain outdoors until Prime Minister Marouf al-Bakhit departs. Funeral for protester becomes focus for another demo 2011 News
Jordanians on Sunday mourned the death of a 55-year-old man who died in the violent anti-government protests rocking the country for the past three months. Khairi Saad is the first person to die in the Jordan s protests inspired by democracy uprisings elsewhere in the Arab world. The government maintains Saad was a supporter while the opposition says he was beaten to death by police. Zaki Bani Rsheid a member of the Islamic Action Front IAF executive council Jordan s Muslim opposition blamed Saad s death on the king the prime minister the intelligence the police who are dirty tools for committing this crime. Khaled Ramadan a leftist activist called Saad the first martyr for freedom in Jordan. More than 200 people attended Saad s funeral Sunday including opposition activists who vowed to continue protests. Marching through the streets of the capital Amman they called Prime Minister Marouf al-Bakhit the enemy of God. The opposition want al-Bakhit to resign parliament to be dissolved and new elections to allow for picking a prime minister by popular vote instead of being appointed by the king.- published: 04 Nov 2013

"KING OBAMA" PUSHING FOR "ANOTHER AGENDA IN THE MIDDLE EAST"!
"KING OBAMA" PUSHING FOR "ANOTHER AGENDA IN THE MIDDLE EAST"!
Over the past few weeks, Jordan has been rather worried about a possible settlement between Israel and the [Palestinians] and about how it could harm the interests of Kingdom Jordan. Past leaders affiliated with the regime who had previously served in sensitive positions in the ruling establishment boldly expressed this concern, which bothered some top government officials. Successive statements by the former Prime Minister and Deputy Speaker of the Senate (the King's Council) Maarouf al-Bakhit have bothered top officials, who thought his remarks "conflict with the official Jordanian position".. Bakhit, who served for years as ambassador to Tel Aviv and is considered among the most prominent conservative statesmen, said, "Jordan must be present and involved in any future negotiations to protect its supreme interests".. Zeid al-Rifai, a former prime minister and a major figure in the official conservative current, made his first appearance in years yesterday [Jan. 15] and warned that the negotiations might affect Jordan. Yet Rifai seemed less worried about the efforts of US Secretary of State John Kerry. He said that Kerry's efforts "will not bear fruit," as quoted by local media.. But a former prime minister and current member of the senate, Samir Zeid al-Rifai, who is following in his father's political path, did not hide his growing concern about the framework agreement proposed by Kerry. Samir al-Rifai said in front of a number of politicians that he was concerned about Jordan entering negotiations that "may produce decisions that are not in the interest of the Palestinian cause".. However, one of the most shocking statements by Jordan's political elite and top officials came from a former parliament speaker and current MP, Abdul Hadi al-Majali, who during the past two decades has been considered one of the regime's most prominent pillars. In parliament, he warned of "shaking the social structures in the cities and the parties. We don't want its shaking to end by shaking the state and its cohesion and its ability to withstand outside [pressure]".. It seems that these hard-line positions from corners affiliated with the Jordanian state pushed [Palestinian Authority Chairman] Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) to send Abbas Zaki as a representative to Amman and meet Bakhit at his home, along with the head of the senate and former Prime Minister Abdul Raouf al-Rawabidah, who is considered the godfather of the conservative movement in the government.. The two Jordanian officials told the Palestinian envoy about the nature of Jordanian concerns regarding the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations and said that they fear the effects of those negotiations on Jordanian interests.. Jordanian and Palestinian political sources said that Kerry, during his recent visit, asked Jordanian officials to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, to close the file on refugees' [right to return] and to support the framework agreement, which provides for an Israeli military presence in the Jordan Valley, compensation for the refugees and compensation to Jordan for hosting them. According to sources, Kerry's demands call for the resettlement of some 2 million Palestinians on Jordanian land.. In this context, Al-Hayat has learned that top Jordanian officials have called for an emergency council to meet regularly to respond to Kerry's framework during the coming period.. In addition to the policy council, which was chaired by top officials, recent meetings have included the new Royal Court chief, Fayez al-Tarawneh, the director of the Office of the King, Imad Fakhoury, and the intelligence chief, Gen. Faisal al-Shobaki, in addition to the heads of parliament and the Senate, Atef al-Tarawneh and Abdul Raouf al-Rawabidah.. During their first meeting, away from the limelight, the conferees discussed how Jordan should deal with Kerry's framework and the need to clarify "Jordanian supreme interests" if negotiations start. These interests involve the status of the refugees, the right of return, compensation, borders, Jerusalem and how much financial compensation the kingdom should request as a "host country"...- published: 16 Feb 2014
