"THE PARALLAX VIEW" TEST FILM IN ITS ENTIRETY
In post-Watergate America, folks were scared. Really scared --- of wire-tapping, of Communism, of the Cold War still raging, of assassination, and of media manipulation. In Alan J. Pakula's brilliant but under-rated film "The Parallax View," Warren Beatty's character is summoned to The Parallax Corporation to test his emotions, his mental acuity, his allegiances. This is the film he is shown.

Ample make this Bed (Sophie's Choice)
If 'Sophie's Choice' had been shot in the last decade, the infatuation between Sophie (Meryl streep) and Nathan (Kevin Kline) would have arrived at its climax with a torrid bed scene, something which did not suit the topic of the film. Alan J.Pakula solves it very cleverly, with both sitting in the bed, and Nathan teaching her English through poetry, reading Emily Dickinson's 'Ample make this Bed': AMPLE make this bed. Make this bed with awe; In it wait till judgment break Excellent and fair. Be its mattress straight, Be its pillow round; Let no sunrise' yellow noise Interrupt this ground. If Dickinson's poetry is sometimes enigmatic, its use in this scene is quite clear.

Moving into a dingy Brooklyn boarding house, Stingo strikes up a friendship with research chemist Nathan Landau (Kevin Kline) and Nathan's girlfriend, Polish refugee Sophie Zawistowska (Oscar-winner Meryl Streep). There is something unsettling about the relationship; Nathan is subject to violent mood swings, while Sophie seems to be harboring a horrible secret.
