US resolution puts India in a bind on Sri Lanka issue
Even as the Indian government struggles to pacify the angry voices from the South demanding action against Sri Lanka for its alleged war crimes, trouble now seems to be compounding for the Center. A US draft resolution circulated in Geneva has put India in a bind as the US has called for a proactive role by India in dealing with its neighbor and takes a strong view against India's non-interference policy. The question now remains- which way will India vote?

Decades of struggle between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers has forced thousands of refugees across the narrow sea passage into India. Yet the full scale of the crisis is still underestimated.
There are over 140,000 Tamils camping out in India. Fleeing persecution in Sri Lanka and living a life of stateless limbo in India, many risk their lives to reach Australia in horrific conditions. For each boatload of refugees, traffickers can make $200,000. Two years ago Subaghini's husband left on a boat for Australia to try to give their family a better life. She has not heard from him since: "We live in hardship. The children are always asking me to bring their dad home. It's very hard" But staying in India is not an option either. "We don't want to go back, but we can't live here. They are not even treating us like humans, they treat refugees like slaves."

Will India alter diplomatic strategy in Sri Lanka issue?
Government keeps cards close to its chest on the Lanka debate. But, allies and the opposition not ready to budge an inch. How will the UPA tide over its Sri Lanka hurdle. Will they change the country's diplomatic strategy or will they risk the ire of its biggest ally, the DMK. Which ever way they go, there is tremendous pressure on the government to disclose its stand on the UNHRC resolution that condemns Colombo for war crimes against Tamils.
