In our quest to reinvigorate all the worlds oceans, with the help of the MQS (Market Quota System), the best place to start is to revive our coastwise bay scallop fisheries. The bay scallop is ten times harder to raise in a hatchery than an oyster. Bay scallops require intensive eelgrass bed management, and also tender loving care. Many fishermen and coastal communities love the bay scallop fishery, but it has, alas, largely gone by the wayside. Water Quality, Fishery Management, Habitat, and Aquaculture are disciplines we will need simultaneously for the rebuild of this keystone fishery.
