Time Warner Cable rigging Internet speed tests?
This video appears to show irrefutable proof that Time Warner Cable in NYC is rigging its internet speed tests to cover up its poor performance. We conducted this test several times before making this video and were able to produce similar results. The test shows three independent speed tests online showing our download speed between 2-6 Mbps, while Time Warner's test mysteriously registers speeds above 25 Mbps. Something's not right.
(As a note, day-to-day internet usage confirms that the independent speed tests are farily accurate, as we often have trouble watching YouTube videos, streaming music or staying reliably connected to our office networks.)
Context:
In early summer 2010 we began subscribing to Time Warner Cable's new wideband internet service, which promised speeds of up to 50Mbps down. We have been consistent disappointed with the service, as it consistently fell well below that mark (as you can see in the video.)
We have had Time Warner out for service several times. We have called dozens of times. We have filed complaints with the local Better Business Bureau. Ultimately, we feel like we have no recourse -- there's no viable competitor in the NYC area.
Discovering that it now appears that Time Warner is purposefully misleading its customers only serves to rub salt in the wound.

Dish Network Installer Fixes Our Time Warner Internet Line (Because They Aren't Doing It!) - VLOG #8
How freakin cool is this? Our Internet connection got cut during some construction yesterday, and although we have an EXPENSIVE Time Warner business connection, we can't get them to show up and do a 5 minute repair.
Time Warner promised multiple times to send someone out to fix it, and also to have someone call us. But no one has, no matter how much we escalate the issue.
Meanwhile, the Dish guys are here installing our new Hopper system and they overheard us talking about the problem and offered to just fix it for us! Have you ever heard of such amazing service? We haven't.

The indie rock band Modest Mouse is getting the royal treatment from Bent Image Lab’s new director/partner Nando Costa. Just completed, the band’s new music video is a dark and expressive piece of film-making. Heavily rooted in live-action, the impressive six-minute video includes intense moments of stop motion, visual effects, and motion graphics techniques, all brought to life within the studio’s walls.
The visuals follow an artist who enters his personal sanctuary where he is presented with a hand-crafted drawing tool that assists him in materializing his mental impressions. Through drawing circular patterns, the machine discharges an endless web of yarn that guides him through his visual representations of his memories. The story progresses to reveal that he is divided between two worlds, one of dull reality and the second of warped memories. In the process of finding a way out of his consciousness, he is trapped between the two competing spaces, which eventually inflict lethal damage, acting as metaphors to self-destruction.
This lyrical and moving piece was conceived by Nando Costa working closely with lead singer/guitarist Isaac Brock to polish some of the film's intricacies. Featuring a seamless combination of live-action and stop motion that alternates between stage shots of Modest Mouse and a spiraling dream-like world of ever-shifting landscapes, Whale Song is a stunning representation of the combined capabilities of Nando and Bent. The variety and execution of the VFX portions of the video – from yarn reeling into complex patterns to a guitar that plays with no musician attached – strongly evoke the confused and surreal patterns of one's warped memories. Additional creative touches such as animated and intricate photographic collages and giant CG snails sliding across the band's stage – add variety and depth to the surreal world.
“This new video is the perfect showcase for the benefits of the collaboration between myself and Bent,” noted Costa. “I typically wouldn't have created a film with this much live-action or stop motion, and Bent also wouldn't normally approach a project with such a strong motion graphics influence, which is what I have long specialized in. With such well integrated in-house teams, I can’t imagine that there’s a project out there that we couldn’t pull off.”
One of the challenges in Whale Song was to recreate the contours of an ever changing, disorienting and intriguing series of landscapes. Costa shot the majority of the piece with Bent’s RED One cameras, which came in handy for their 4K capabilities when adding camera movement in post. In order to create the feeling that lead singer/guitarist Isaac Brock was being split up between two competing scenarios of pure reality and his imagination, for example, Costa mounted two of the RED cameras side by side on a custom plate, each with identical lenses set at an angle to simulate a stereoscopic effect.
In another instance, band members that appeared to be standing on the ground were actually hoisted aloft and secured to a fake ground plane, which meant that the stage floor was perpendicular to the ground. This situation intentionally restrained their flexibility and shifted the gravity, adding oddness to their movements.
Costa used a variety of frame rates, ranging from time-lapses at 6 frames per second, to 1000 fps shots from a Phantom camera to give the feeling of variety of speed in the character's memories. Blue screen stages were used extensively to place Isaac against the varying landscapes of mountains, dense forest valleys, and deserts. Bent's CG department was also responsible for creating significant portions of the video's landscapes and scenic elements.
During production, Nando and his team relied solely on a very detailed script containing technical and creative notes, live-action and animation guidelines, with specifications for composting and stop motion, which were all previously defined and polished by the director. “From what I’ve learned, producing a project at Bent is a wonderfully self-contained experience,” noted Costa. “From building intricate props to figuring out complex CG shots, Bent has specialists in all fields. I’ll walk over to the stage for live-action, then back to compositing, load the footage and work from there. It makes the whole process immeasurably easier, and creatively freeing.”
“Seeing this video makes me feel good about what we’ve done here at Bent”, stated Bent EP Ray Di Carlo”. We set out to establish a creative clubhouse atmosphere where talented people like Nando could come to work. I’ve always admired directors who can hold a project’s final vision in their minds eye and are able to let the talents around them do their respective jobs for a pr

Cartoon Network 20th Birthday Music Video
Our friends at Cartoon Network got in touch earlier in the year to ask us to work with them on a music video for their 20th Birthday celebrations. Needless to say we jumped at the chance and we started work on an epic 2 minute long video featuring original music from Mad Decent and nearly every character Cartoon Network has aired over the past 20 years.
The video finally premiered on the 1st of October and will appear on Cartoon Network throughout the month of October and is also available for download through iTunes and Amazon (for free!) as well as being on CN's youtube channel.

DJ Cheeba - Revenge of The Nerd
In 2010, DJ Cheeba's first audio visual mix 'The Reels of Solid Steel' set a new level of progression for DJs. Now in 2011 he returns with the next episode... 'Revenge Of The Nerd'. A quick fire, attention frying, mash of sure fire club hits, stone cold classics, countless acapellas and turntable tricknology, all set to a visual feast of music videos, pop culture cameos, kung fu interludes and cinematic delights. Mixed with incredible flair and imagination, this is another bench mark in contemporary DJ culture. As Cheeba puts it... "It's cut and paste sound and pictures for people with open minds and short attention spans."

Bandwidth throttling on Youtube and Vimeo with Time Warner Cable
A test where one Youtube HD video and one Vimeo HD video were loaded with two different internet connections ( bench marking the connections using speedtest.net before the tests )
One connection was a Time Warner Cable Internet service rated for 30Mbps down, 5Mpbs up. These speeds were verified by speedtest.net. I can also verify these speeds are consistent based on things I do like download large games from Steam.
The other connection was a Verizon 4G iPhone set up as a Personal Hot Spot. LTE bandwidth in my home ranges from 15-40Mbps down and 4-25Mbps up whenever I do speed tests.
I need to make some clarification about what I mean by Time Warner "Throttling" bandwidth. Time Warner isn't throttling my home internet connection. If they were, I wouldn't be able to achieve the 30/5 Mbit speed I showed in the video. Instead, they are either throttling the bandwidth from the caching servers their customers are routed to or the caching servers are congested beyond their capacity. Either way, Time Warner has a responsibility to their customers to address these issues.
Google doesn't own the servers that predominantly serve up video to Time Warner customers. Google has a caching and peering network that allows traffic to be routed to servers that are considered "ideal" for the viewer of the video. The viewer's internet provider, geographic location, and DNS server are all taken into account in this selection. Unfortunately, Google's peering agreements allow ISP's to direct YouTube traffic to servers they own or lease to cut down on their bandwidth overhead costs. YouTube also builds in throttling algorithms into the video player itself to help alleviate congestion. For example, if you pause a video, you may notice that it stops loading until you press play again. Things like this are done so that the server doesn't waste a bunch of bandwidth serving up a huge video file that someone may only watch the first few seconds of. Unfortunately, this kind of thing prevents you from pausing the video and waiting for it to load. The video will only load when it is being played, and since it is loading slower than it is playing, it's virtually unwatchable.
Caching servers, peering networks, CDN's and etc. are useful and important aspects of the internet. It wouldn't be feasible for a site like YouTube to exist without them.
It is Time Warner's responsibility, however, to ensure the quality and integrity of the routing and content caching servers they have influence over for a website like YouTube. When your internet service provider has an incentive to route traffic in a way that maximizes their dollar earned, you can assume they aren't going to invest money in servers and infrastructure until they have to.
Many users have complained about the same issues on Time Warner, and someone else actually helped me discover the IP range of the caching servers are the culprit of these problems. I'm still investigating, but I believe that Time Warner owns or leases these caching servers, and are responsible for not scaling them adequately to handle the demand of their customers.
I will be posting a follow-up video explaining how to block these servers using your router or computer's firewall. When the YouTube player realizes you can't connect to the server it routes you to, it will fall back to its own network and servers. The reason why the YouTube video loaded so quickly in the Verizon 4G test is that the video was loaded directly from a YouTube server.
You can actually see what server Youtube will serve you video from by going to: http://redirector.c.youtube.com/report_mapping
I have no idea how to resolve the results of that tool to an actual IP address or anything yet.

Time Warner Cable - What they do and don't want you to know.
Time Warner Cable just loves to screw people over. They love to offer new customers such "low" rates, and then jack up the price either after a year, or when a customer wants to switch services. For existing customers, to get low rates, they lock you into a two-year contract and threaten you with a $150 cancellation fee to keep you from cancelling or changing services. When a two-year contract is up, they re-lock you in with higher rates without permission so you will be stuck with the high prices unless you pay the huge fee to break the contract. The only way you are notified of a new upcoming contract is via a little postcard in the mail.
I laugh each time this commercial airs, and they mention their "Next Generation Home Phone". Sorry Time Warner, magicJack (Now magicJack PLUS) has already proven what "Next Generation" is with Next Generation pricing of $29.95 a year for Next Generation landline telephone technology without needing a computer to work... after a year is up, their "Triple Play" isn't such a good play after all. I'll just keep my magicJack Plus. The digital TV and Internet is wonderful. For the phone, I'd just recommend you skip theirs and get a magicJack Plus.
Now TWC is pulling channels from their analog service and hitting up Internet and N.G.H.P. users with $4 fees for equipment. Next thing, they might start charging N.G.H.P users with long distance fees like an old telephone company!
