Get the full experience of these images in 1080p. Buzz Aldrin described the "Magnificent Desolation" of the lunar surface. Rarely do those words ring as true as in these recent images from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Revel in the detail of these images, and the severity of the Lunar surface, then be thankful you're relaxing on a green and blue world sheltered from the hostile environment of space.

Part I: High-Res Images of Cities at Night (from ISS)
City lights broadcast our existence into the night of space. Imagine how the Earth will look to astronauts in a century's time or longer? These images are incredibly difficult to take from a spacecraft traveling along at almost 28,000 kilometers per hour. The images are held at NASA's Johnson Space Center in a special archive for astronaut photography. Watch for the great cities of Beijing, Istanbul, Melbourne, Montreal, London, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Buenos Aires, Brasilia (one of our favorites), and more.

Haunting Images from the Sun
Watch this and other space videos at http://SpaceRip.com
April 21, 2011 marks the one-year anniversary of the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) First Light press conference, where NASA revealed the first images taken by the spacecraft.
In the last year, the sun has gone from its quietest period in years to the activity marking the beginning of solar cycle 24. SDO has captured every moment with a level of detail never-before possible. The mission has returned unprecedented images of solar flares, eruptions of prominences, and the early stages of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). In this video are some of the most beautiful, interesting, and mesmerizing events seen by SDO during its first year.
In the order they appear in the video the events are:
1. Prominence Eruption from AIA in 304 Angstroms on March 30, 2010.
2. Cusp Flow from AIA in 171 Angstroms on February 14, 2011.
3. Prominence Eruption from AIA in 304 Angstroms on February 25, 2011.
4. Cusp Flow from AIA in 304 Angstroms on February 14, 2011.
5. Merging Sunspots from HMI in Continuum on October 24-28, 2010.
6. Prominence Eruption and active region from AIA in 304 Angstroms on April 30, 2010.
7. Solar activity and plasma loops from AIA in 171 Angstroms on March 4-8, 2011.
8. Flowing plasma from AIA in 304 Angstroms on April 19, 2010.
9. Active regions from HMI in Magnetogram on March 10, 2011.
10. Filament eruption from AIA in 304 Angstroms on December 6, 2010.
11. CME start from AIA in 211 Angstroms on March 8, 2011.
12. X2 flare from AIA in 304 Angstroms on February 15, 2011.

25 Amazing Images With An Electron Microscope
Tweet this video! - http://clicktotweet.com/YegWw
We live in a world that is not only enormously big, but also infinitesimally small. Of course, unless you're one of the rich curious types you've probably never taken the time to buy a million dollar scanning electron microscope in order to appreciate its miniature wonders. Fortunately for us however, government funded scientists have done all the dirty work. The images you are about to see would not have been possible with normal light powered microscopes because the wavelength of visible light (photons) is much too long. Electrons, on the other hand, have wavelengths over 100,000 times shorter which leads to much greater magnifications. Needless to say, as a result of this these 25 amazing images with an electron microscope don't come with the amazing colors you see but these have to be added after the fact.

1990 Saturn: Among the first images to be sent back from Hubble after its launch in April 1990, this image of Saturn is good by the standards of ground-based telescopes, but slightly blurry.
1991 Orion Nebula: Although not perfectly sharp, this early image of the Orion Nebula nevertheless shows the rich colours and structures of this bright star-forming region.
1992 Herbig-Haro 2: Throughout the region of the Orion Nebula are numerous streamers of gas that come from newborn stars, known to astronomers as Herbig-Haro Objects.
1993 Messier 100: In late 1993, Hubble's teething problems were resolved in the first servicing mission. Before-and-after images of the core of spiral galaxy Messier 100 show how this dramatically improved the telescope's image quality.
1994 Shoemaker-Levy 9 hits Jupiter: Soon after the astronauts repaired Hubble during the first servicing mission, comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided with Jupiter. A similar impact on Earth 65 million years ago is thought to have killed off the dinosaurs.
1995 Eagle Nebula: Hubble's image of the 'pillars of creation' in the Eagle Nebula is one of its most famous. These huge, dusty structures enshroud pockets of ongoing star formation.
1996 NGC 6826: This image from 1996 shows a planetary nebula, which represents the other extremity of a star's life from the Eagle Nebula. Planetary nebulae form when Sun-like stars puff out their outer layers as they run low on fuel.
1997 Mars: NASA's Mars Pathfinder probe was en route to Mars in 1997 while Hubble took this image.
1998 Ring Nebula: Another planetary nebula, the Ring Nebula is one of the most famous.
1999 Keyhole Nebula: The Keyhole Nebula, part of the larger Carina Nebula is another bright star-forming region.
2000 NGC 1999: Not all nebulae glow brightly. NGC 1999 contains a dark patch silhouetted against a brighter background which reflects starlight.
2001 ESO 510-G13: Hubble's image of this galaxy shows the dramatic deformations that can occur after collisions between galaxies. Although the immense distance between stars makes it vanishingly unlikely for stars to actually collide with each other, the tidal forces can warp and tear galaxies out of shape.
2002 Cone Nebula: Further upgrades in 2002, including the installation of the Advanced Camera for Surveys increased resolution and picture quality again. Hubble's ultra-sharp image of the Cone Nebula demonstrates the new instrument's capabilities.
2003 Hubble Ultra Deep Field: Usually astronomers know what they're going to look at when they plan their observations. For the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, observed over 11 days between September 2003 and January 2004, they did not. Pointing the telescope at an extremely dark patch of sky devoid of nearby stars, this extremely long exposure was designed to see the most distant and faintest galaxies in the Universe.
2004 Antennae Galaxies: The dramatic collision of two spiral galaxies is visible in this image of the Antennae Galaxies.
2005 The Orion Nebula: This image of the Orion Nebula is one of the largest and most detailed ever made.
2006 Messier 9: Globular clusters, roughly spherical collections of stars, contain some of the oldest stars in our Milky Way. Hubble's high resolution observations allow astronomers to discern individual stars right into the centre of these clusters.
2007 NGC 4874: This image of NGC 4874, a galaxy in the Coma Cluster, was taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys just two days before it suffered an electronic failure in January 2007. For the next two years, astronomers would have to make do with lower resolution images from Hubble's other cameras.
2008 NGC 2818: This image of planetary nebula NGC 2818 dates from this period. It is worth noting that even with its capabilities constrained, Hubble was still able to produce images that compete with any telescope on the ground.
2009 Bug Nebula: In 2009, astronauts travelled to Hubble for another servicing mission, which installed new and upgraded cameras. The Bug Nebula was one of the first images sent back: Hubble was back in business.
2010 Centaurus A: Using its new instrumentation, Hubble peered into the heart of Centaurus A, a dramatically dusty galaxy.
2011 Tarantula Nebula: This image of the Tarantula Nebula combines a mosaic of Hubble observations, which capture the detail and structure of the nebula, with observations of glowing hydrogen and oxygen from the European Southern Observatory's MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope in Chile, which provide colour.

NASA | New Eye on the Sun Delivers Stunning First Images
This compilation of video shows some of the first imagery and data sent back from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Most of the imagery comes from SDO's AIA instrument, and different colors are used to represent different temperatures, a common technique for observing solar features. SDO sees the entire disk of the Sun in extremely high spacial and temporal resolution and this allows scientists to zoom in on notable events like flares, waves, and sunspots. Enjoy the imagery and post in the comments the parts you found most captivating.
To learn more about the SDO mission, visit: http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/sdo/news/briefing-materials-20100421.html
http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/Gallery/SDOFirstLight.html
Launched on Feb. 11, 2010, SDO is the most advanced spacecraft ever designed to study the sun. During its five-year mission, it will examine the sun's magnetic field and also provide a better understanding of the role the sun plays in Earth's atmospheric chemistry and climate. Since launch, engineers have been conducting testing and verification of the spacecrafts components. Now fully operational, SDO will provide images with clarity 10 times better than high-definition television and will return more comprehensive science data faster than any other solar observing spacecraft.

Time lapse sequences of photographs taken by the crew of expeditions
28 & 29 onboard the International Space Station from August to October,
2011, who to my knowledge shot these pictures at an altitude of around 350 km.
All credit goes to them.
HD, refurbished, smoothed, retimed, denoised, deflickered, cut, etc.
All in all I tried to keep the looks of the material as original as possible,
avoided adjusting the colors and the like, since in my opinion the original
footage itself already has an almost surreal and aestethical visual nature.

Midnight Sun | Iceland
BEST VIEWED IN HD AND FULLSCREEN (with scaling off)
Midnight Sun: A natural phenomenon occurring in the summer months north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle where the sun never fully sets and remains visible 24 hours a day.
This short time lapse film was shot during the Icelandic Midnight Sun in June of 2011.
For 17 days I travelled solo around the entire island shooting almost 24 hours, sleeping in the car, and eating whenever I had the time. During my days shooting this film I shot 38,000 images, travelled some 2900 miles, and saw some of the most amazing, beautiful, and indescribable landscapes on the planet. Iceland is absolutely one of the most beautiful and unusual places you could ever imagine. Especially during the Midnight Sun when the quality of light hitting the landscape is very unusual, and very spectacular.
Iceland is a landscape photographers paradise and playground, and should be number 1 on every photographers must visit list. Iceland during the Midnight Sun is in sort of a permanent state of sunset. The sun never full sets and travels horizontally across the horizon throughout the night, as can be seen in the opening shot and at the :51 second mark in the video.
During the Arctic summer, sunset was at midnight and sunrise was at 3am. The Arctic summer sun provided 24 hours a day of light, with as much as 6 hours daily of "Golden light". Once the sun had set it wouldn't even get dark enough for the stars to come out, and they don't start to reappear until August.
My advice to everyone out there, photographer or not, is simple... You MUST visit Iceland sometime during your lifetime. You will never regret it.

Making Future Magic: iPad light painting
This film explores playful uses for the increasingly ubiquitous ‘glowing rectangles’ that inhabit the world.
We use photographic and animation techniques that were developed to draw moving 3-dimensional typography and objects with an iPad. In dark environments, we play movies on the surface of the iPad that extrude 3-d light forms as they move through the exposure. Multiple exposures with slightly different movies make up the stop-frame animation.
We've collected some of the best images from the project and made a book of them you can buy: http://bit.ly/mfmbook

From Love to Bingo Getty Images AlmapBBDO
Patient research work involving more than 5 thousand photographs resulted in a 1 minute film that AlmapBBDO created to advertise Getty Images, the world leading image database for creating and distributing visual contents. The film is surprising when showing 873 images in 15 images per second, sufficient speed to transform the series into a video that, without any text, tells a beautiful story. All photos, without any exceptions, are from the Getty Images archives.
Copywriter Sophie Schoenburg and art director Marcos Kotlhar worked 6 months researching images, improving the script and building each scene so they would not only be understood, but would also touch viewers. Sometimes, for example, a scene would look perfect on paper, but the images chosen to depict it were not sufficient or did not perfectly match up to offer the right movement and sense. And hence the research had to be restarted. The film was directed by Cisma, via Paranoid BR, along with Marcos Kotlhar, the art director at the agency.
For this creation team, the purpose was to adhere to the concept that Getty Images has so many images that anybody is capable of telling any story they want by only using their archives. In the film "Do amor ao Bingo em 873 imagens" [From love to Bingo in 873 images], a storyteller in the corner of the screen describes the images used. The Getty Images logo appears at the end of the story, but the storyteller continues to turn until reaching the exact number of images in the Getty Images archive.
