Cathy Come Home (1966) - Ken Loach
Cathy Come Home is a BBC television drama by Jeremy Sandford, produced by Tony Garnett and directed by Ken Loach. Filmed in a gritty, realistic drama documentary style, it was first broadcast on 16 November 1966 on BBC1. The play was shown in the BBC's The Wednesday Play anthology strand, which was well known for tackling social issues. The play tells the story of a young couple, Cathy (played by Carol White) and Reg (Ray Brooks). Initially their relationship flourishes and they have a child and move into a modern home. When Reg is injured and loses his well-paid job, they are evicted by bailiffs, and they face a life of poverty and unemployment, illegally squatting in empty houses and staying in shelters. Finally, Cathy has her children taken away by social services. The play was watched by 12 million people — a quarter of the British population at the time — on its first broadcast. It broached issues that were not then widely discussed in the popular media, such as homelessness, unemployment, and the rights of mothers to keep their own children. It may have helped to influence changes in British law and in public opinion about these social issues. It also helped raise the profile of the issue of homelessness. The film is often wrongly seen as influencing the founding of the charity for the homeless Shelter shortly after first broadcast but in actuality this was a coincidence. However, the large audience for this programme and the influence it had on the British ...

Ken Loach's Version of Superman Alexei Sayle
A great sketch fron Series 2 Episode 2 of the all new Alexei Sayle show. In the hands of grim Northern director Ken Loach the story of Superman is reimagined as him being an out of work miner from Yorkshire. Look out for Ricky Tomlinson reprising his role from Loach's 'Raining Stones' and offering everyone cheap worms. Sorry for the watermark on the video - I'm trying out different DVD rip software and this one insists on being noticed!

Ken Loach Condemns David Cameron January 2012
The British film industry should back more mainstream movies, a report is expected to recommend next week. Ahead of a visit to Pinewood Studios on Wednesday, Prime Minister David Cameron said the film industry should support "commercially successful pictures". British film-maker Ken Loach criticised the prime minister for leaking only part of Lord Smith's review into the government's film policy. He added that it was difficult to predict commercial success and funding should go to a "wide variety of projects and people". "If you knew what was going to be successful before you made it, we'd all be millionaires. It doesn't work like that," he said.

Noam Chomsky answers questions from Ken Loach, Paul Laverty, Alice Walker, Chris Hedges, John Berger and Amira Hass
Frank Barat asks Prof Noam Chomsky 6 questions that were sent by Alice Walker, John Berger, Ken Loach, Paul Laverty, Amira Hass and Chris Hedges.
Interview starts with question from John Berger:
Political practice often surprises political vocabulary. For example, the recent Revolution in the Middle East is said to demand Democracy. Can we find more adequate words?
Isn't the use of the old and frequently betrayed words a way of absorbing the shock, instead of welcoming it and transmitting it further?
05:20: Chris Hedges
Julien Benda in The Treason of Intellectuals argued that it is only when intellectuals are not in the pursuit of practical aims or material advantages that they can serve as a conscience and a corrective. Can you address the loss of philosophers, religious leaders, writers, journalists, artists and scholars whose lives were once lived in direct opposition to the realism of the multitudes and what this has meant for our intellectual and moral life?
11:51: Amira Hass
Have the uprisings in the arab states made you change, revise some of your past evaluations? Have they - and how - affected your notions of, for example :masses, hope, facebook, poverty, western intervention, surprise?
22:06: Ken Loach
How do we overcome sectariasnism on the left?
25:44: Paul Laverty
There has probably never been a time where there has been such concentration of wealth and power in so few hands. The powerful are sophisticated in maintaining this state of affairs, but perhaps we use this too as an excuse to hide our shortcomings on the left. What do you think has been lacking in our imaginative effort to build a mass international campaign to democratise resources, and challenge Corporate Power? Can you imagine a time where we can organise our lives and economies successfully on a co-operative basis, rather than a competitive one?
35:05: Alice Walker
I believe that a one state solution to the Palestine/Israel impasse is inevitable; and more just than a two state solution could ever be. This is because I don't believe Israel will ever give up trying to control Palestinians, whether citizens of Israel or those living in the occupied territories. Under a two state solution there would be Israel and a Palestinian bantustan.
I have been struck by your dismissal of the one state idea as something almost absurd, and would like to understand why you see it this way. Is there no hope that Israelis and Palestinians might live together as white and black people do, after the fall of apartheid, in South Africa?
Frank Barat is coordinator of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine, an initiative endorsed by Noam Chomsky.

Michael Moore talks to Ken Loach and Paul Laverty
For filmgoers who crave political engagement, the partnership of director Ken Loach and writer Paul Laverty is a rich source. Their latest work, Route Irish grapples with the Iraq war and the trend of using privatized soldiers who are more costly to taxpayers and less accountable to law than enlisted ranks. In this Mavericks session -- moderated by documentary filmmaker Michael Moore -- Loach and Laverty have an onstage dialogue delving deeper into the film's subject matter, and reflecting on other political currents that run through their work.
