Ikat Time Lapse - Large 540p Video Sharing.mov
I practice one of the oldest and most widespread forms of textile decoration. Ikat. It is a process in which you bind and dye the warp or weft fibers to create an image. The bindings are removed, the fibers are washed out and dried before the weaving process begins. I recorded every second of the process (about three months) and put it into this four minute video. ENJOY:)

Thai Ikat Silk Weaving
Traditional Thai designs are woven into the fabric using the IKAT method. The design is not stamped onto the fabric after weaving. Designs are developed by binding specific sections of the silk prior to dyeing. Only the unbound sections receive the color. This process can be repeated to achieve more complex designs. After dyeing, only minor adjustments in the weaving are needed to develop the intended design.

Almost Ikat Weaving Tutorial with Bonnie Tarses
In this weaving tutorial, weaving master Bonnie Tarses demonstrates her intriguingly clever "Almost Ikat" technique for winding a warp that looks just like ikat, a labor-intensive resist dyeing process in which a carefully planned pattern is dyed into the strands of warp before it is put on the loom. For more of Bonnie's work, visit her blog at weavingspirit.blogspot.com or her official site at www.bonnietarses.com.

Silk Ikats of Central Asia - exhibition introduction from curators Jackie Menzies & Christina Sumner
Silk Ikats of Central Asia From the collection of the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia 2 July - 11 October 2009 Asian gallery, ground level An exhibition of late 19th century robes, tunics and textile panels that presents the remarkable artistic achievement and technical virtuosity of the silk designers, dyers and weavers of Central Asia. Within and without the borders of Central Asia, ikat textiles had political and social value, used as payment for services rendered, as dowry and bride price, in diplomatic exchanges and as gifts to monarchs. Great pride was taken in the aesthetic quality and bold originality of the designs of these ikat fabrics that came to symbolise the exoticism of the Islamic world.

Ikat Weaving at Nong Boua Thong: Part 1
The title here is a little deceiving because there isn't any actuall weaving in this video, but, there's a tremendous amount of work that goes into preparing ikat silk before it is woven into fabric. Here a group of Tai Daeng (Red Tai) women work together involved in different facets of preparing the silk. The one woman on the right is tieing off the silk before dyeing. It's incredibly time consuming and depending on the complexity of the pattern can take days. The women on the left are taking off the wrap after dyeing. You can see the resulting pattern that is created by tieing off the silk. This video is a "slow" video that I'm posting to give you a feel for the time involved.

Ikat Weavings-Wave Series
www.FiberArtTv.com ⁃The wave series is a number of fiber art wall hangings using the ikat technique. This technique is a resist technique applied to the warp threads prior to the weaving process. These wall hangings can be made up to a width of six and a half feet, and any length required for area for it to be installed.FiberArtTv is all about the world of weaving; an art form over 10000 years old and a fundamental process for existence today! Museums have been established to promote increased appreciation for the history of weaving and other fiber art throughout the world. The everyday needs of our prehistoric ancestors probably led them to create objects using fiber as a medium. Archaeologists believe that basket making and weaving were probably the first "crafts" developed by humans.Today fiber art, textiles, woven materials and objects surround every person. The need for clothing woven from yarn and thread is no longer a basic necessity but a huge billions of dollars industry employing millions of designers, weavers, dyers, sewers, textile mills and fiber artists. My fiber art fascination is with the endless possibilities that can be achieved starting with one simple thread.
