Still of Bashiruddin Mahmood (left of shot) with unidentified man STORYLINE: The mother of one of two retired nuclear scientists detained by Pakistan authorities spoke on Thursday of her anguish at not knowing the whereabouts of her son. Eighty-five year-old Fazilat Bibi is fighting for the immediate release of her son, Bashiruddin Mahmood, who was being questioned for a second time. In an emotional statement to journalists as she left the High Court in Lahore where her legal bid was being heard, Bibi said she too should be held if her son was not released. Mahmood and fellow retired nuclear scientist Abdul Majeed, who were both involved in a non-governmental organisation providing aid to Afghans, where questioned last month about their working visits to Afghanistan. A Pakistani government spokesman on Wednesday told journalists that the detainees had possibly violated rules governing the activities of former scientists. Links between the pair and Pakistan's nuclear weapons programme were denied earlier this week by President Pervez Musharaff.
