Johann Strauss I (March 14, 1804 -- September 25, 1849; German: Johann Baptist Strauß, Johann Strauss (Vater); also Johann Baptist Strauss, Johann Strauss, Sr., the Elder, the Father), born in Vienna, was an Austrian Romantic composer famous for his waltzes, and for popularizing them alongside Joseph Lanner, thereby setting the foundations for his sons to carry on his musical dynasty. His most famous piece is probably the Radetzky March (named after Joseph Radetzky von Radetz), while his most famous waltz is probably the Lorelei Rheinklänge, Op. 154. Radetzky March, Op. 228, is a march composed by Johann Strauss Sr. in 1848. It was dedicated to the Austrian Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz, and became quite a popular march among soldiers. It has been remarked that its tone is more celebratory than martial-- Strauss was commissioned to write the piece for a celebration of Radetsky's victory at the Battle of Custoza. For the Trio Strauss used an older folk melody called „Alter Tanz aus Wien" or „Tinerl-Lied" in 3/4 time signature (named after a then popular singer). When Radetzky came back to Vienna after winning the battle of Custozza (1848), his soldiers were singing the then popular song. Allegedly Strauss heard this singing and included the melody, this time in 2/4 time signature, into the Radetzky march. When it was first played in front of Austrian officers they spontaneously clapped and stamped their feet when they heard the chorus. This tradition is kept alive today when the march is played in classical music venues in Vienna, among members of the audience who are familiar with the tradition. It is almost always played as the last piece at the Neujahrskonzert, the Vienna New Year Concert. Fue un compositor austriaco conocido particularmente por sus valses y por popularizarlos junto con Josef Lanner. Fue el fundador (sin que fuese su intención) de una dinastía musical con sus hijos Johann Strauss (hijo), Josef Strauss y Eduard Strauss. Su obra más famosa es probablemente la Marcha Radetzky (llamada así por Joseph Radetzky von Radetz), mientras que quizás su vals más famoso sea Lorelei Rhein Klänge op. 154. La Marcha Radetzky es una composición orquestal de Johann Strauss (padre), escrita en el año 1848. Desde 1896 es la marcha oficial de presentación de la Escuela Militar del Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins, del Ejército de Chile. Fue compuesta en honor al mariscal de campo austriaco conde Joseph Wenzel Radetzky, que en una serie de victorias, salvó el poderío militar de Austria en el norte de Italia durante la revolución de 1848-49. La marcha alcanzó gran popularidad como expresión del nacionalismo austriaco.
