"As one discovers from reading Wiseman, tremendous instruction can be gained from studying the pattern of the Divine names used according to the context of each successive Toledoth history. "
GOD OF THE UDDER: ANOTHER LOOK AT EL SHADDAI

The "breasted god"
Stone suggests that Shaddai is derived from the similar word, shad, which the Bible translates, "breast."
"Victor P. Hamilton connects the word shad to the blessing of fertility and progeny in this verse (Gen. 49:25).[39] Stone connects the name, Shaddai with shad, and suggests that "Shaddai signifies one who nourishes, supplies and satisfies."

The title "El" is a common name for god:
"By the way, the connection of Jacob with El is sometimes asserted on the basis of Jacobís other name, ìIsrael,î where ìElî is the last part of the name. Again, ìElî is a title for god that is often used in other personal names in Israel (such as ìSamuelî) and in neighboring nations. So in the Ammonite collection of personal names more than 150 contain the name ìElî, but most would affirm that the chief god of Ammon was Milkom, and that ìElî was a title of Milkom. One must be very careful about drawing lots of conclusions from a word that can be a title for any god in the West Semitic world."
http://www.reasonablefaith.org/site/News2?page=NewsArticle&id;=7110
Canaanite religion was unlike the faith of the Israelites:
"As the myths of ancient Ugarit indicate, the religion of the Canaanite peoples was a crude and debased form of ritual polytheism. It was associated with sensuous fertility-cult worship of a particularly lewd and orgiastic kind, which proved to be more influential than any other nature religion in the ANE."
"The word El is a generic name for "god" in Northwest Semitic (Hebrew and Ugaritic) and as such it is also used in the Old Testament for heathen deities or idols"

The Divine Council
"Yahweh (The Lord) produced the elohim and everything else without a consort. Yahweh's (The Lord's) "fatherhood" of the elohim can only be spoken of in formal terms. Lastly, the members of the council, contrary to ancient near eastern religions, cannot be viewed as genuine rivals to the Most High. Yahweh (The Lord) need not battle the divine beings to maintain His position as leader of the council and hence the cosmos. There are no mighty deeds ascribed to any other than Yahweh (The Lord). The elohim are obviously inferior. Yahweh (The Lord) is unchallenged and, in fact, unchallengeable."
http://www.thedivinecouncil.com/DT32BibSac.pdf
Regarding the literary similarities between the texts:
"It is improper exegesis to force pagan beliefs into the biblical text simply because of linguistic similarities. Further, as Leupold accurately concluded: "One need not be alarmed by such discoveries if one bears in mind that two slightly different types of Canaanite (or Hebrew) language are involved. Least of all is the dependence of the Hebrew production in such a case established" (1959, p. 17). The Bible has the right to define its own words and concepts; pagan myths are not the controlling factor of biblical interpretation."

Lattakia and the lost city of Ugarit
A travel video on Lattakia and Ugarit, a nearly 4,000-years-old city now considered the birthplace of the alphabet. We know a fair bit about Ugarit from its surviving stashes of clay tablets, written in this first alphabet. One tablet even has this timeless reminder to men: 'Do not tell your wife where you hide your money.'

The first piano & orchestra arrangement of the 3400 year old "Hurrian Hymn", the oldest music notation in the world which was discovered on clay tablets in the ancient city of Ugarit, Syria. Although 29 musical texts were discovered in Ugarit, only this Cuneiform text was in a state of preservation to analyze and study its modern academic musical reconstruction. The scholarly contributions of Dr. Richard Dumbrill to the translation and interpretation of the Hurrian song H6 are acknowledged with appreciation.

Ugarit, Syria is the birthplace of alphabet and music notation. The interpretation of the music notation of Ugarit is a challenge and several "reconstructions" have been published. The evidence that both the 7-note diatonic scale as well as harmony existed 3400 years ago flies in the face of most musicologists' views that ancient harmony was virtually non-existent or even impossible. This has revolutionized the whole concept of the origin of Western music.
This work is founded on the oldest music notation in the world discovered in the ancient Syrian city of Ugarit. The clay tablets contain a hymn to the moon god's wife, Nikkal. Although hundreds of such tablets were discovered over the years, these very tablets contain words and notation of a song all composed in the same "maqam" or mode (called nîd qabli). Further, they contained instructions for a singer accompanied by musicians, as well as instructions on tuning the strings of the instrument.
This Ugaritic hymns was arranged into a melancholic piano work preserving its rhythmic structure and building a musical bridge to the past. The song of this woman's marriage was filled with pain at not having children for her husband and her family. Apparently, the song is a lament, "the plaintive cry of an infertile woman" seeking the answer to her barrenness from the moon goddess.
Several musicologists and cuneiform specialists from several countries -- among them Benno Landsberger, Anne D. Kilmer, O.R. Gurney, M. Duchesne-Guillemin, H.G. Guterbock, E. Sollberger, D. Wulstan, VItale, H. Kummel, and E. Laroche -- have examined these five texts. A number of attempts have been made to reconstruct their musical significance, especially that of the Hurrian cult hymn. The results in the latter case are noteworthy for their wide divergence, yet the essentials of the music theory behind all these obscure documents seems well understood.
The main goal of "Echoes from Ugarit" is to shed the light on this very important historical fact to tell the world that Ugarit, Syria has the oldest music notation in the world!

http://www.artehistoria.com/arte/videos/686.htm

A Hurrian Cult Song from Ancient Ugarit
The most ancient example of written song. A hymn to Nikkal, wife of the moon god. The text is written upon a fragmented tablet and, therefore, is incomplete. The hymn has four stanzas, each with a refrain. Stanzas 1 and 4 are imitation, and stanzas 2 and 3 are identical musically. The singer is accompanied by a lyra. The lyra harmony is predominantly in thirds and sixths, a few fourths, and one fifth.
There are startling similarities between the Babylonian principles of music theory and those used by ancient Greeks. Moreover, the Babylonian principles antedate the Greek ones by more than a millenium.
The Babylonians seem to have used music exclusively in connection with religious observances and festivals. The names of lyra/kithara strings and musical pitches were related to their cult deities and to the planets in a cosmology similar to Greek philosophers' "harmony of the spheres."

The Hymn to Nikkal .:. 𐎐𐎋𐎍 .:. (Hurrian 12th century BCE - Ugarit)
The Hurrian Hymn to Nikkal from 12th century BCE Ugarit (Ras Shamra) in Syria is currently the oldest piece of annotated music known to history being well over 3,200 years old.
It dates from between 1400 and 1200 BCE and was discovered in the libraries of the city of Ugarit.
Although it was written in Ugaritic cuneiform it is actually in Hurrian rather than a West Semitic dialect such as Akkadian, Canaanite, Amorite, Aramaic, or proto-Hebrew.
This is a hymn to the Great Goddess Nikkal (Nikkalu 𐎐𐎋𐎍 in Ugaritic) composed by a sacred scribe by the name of Hammurapi.
It addition to the words of the prayer there are also instructions for the tuning of the kinnor (lyre) and these have been the focus of several studies by palaeo-musicologists.
The version of the hymn which was recorded by Tiger Shade studios in the UK is based on the work of Professor Anne Kilmer and Professor Theo Krispijn.
The musical arrangement is by Declann Flynn (Al-pha-X) and the beautiful voice is courtesy of Ali Eve Cudby.
You can listen to a short talk by Professor Theo Krispijn which contains his translation of the text on the MySpace page of Tiger Shade which is at :
http://www.myspace.com/tigershaderecordings
Here you will also find the version restored by Declann Flynn (Al-pha-X) and sung by Ali Eve Cudby.
There is also some information about the work of Professor Anne Kilmer on the Bella Roma music site :
http://www.bellaromamusic.com/stories/hurrianmoonrise/moonrisepage.html
Although Professor Kilmer admits that portions of the Hurrian text are quite difficult to translate there is one line of the song that is the exception to this:
According to Kilmer "The meaning of one phrase in the text is quite clear:
"wesal tatib tisiya"
means "Thou (the Goddess), lovest them in (Thy) heart..."

Echoes of Ancient Ugarit
This unique video, features my brand new arrangement for solo lyre, in the beautifully pure just intonation of antiquity, of Dr Richard Dumbrill's magnificant interpretation of the 3400 year old "Hurrian Hymn Text H6" - track 1 from my new compilation album of solo lyre music, "Musical Adventures in Time Travel".
The Hurrian Hymn (catalogued as Text H6) was discovered in Ugarit, Syria, in the early 1950s, and was preserved for 3400 years on a clay tablet, written in the Cuniform text of the ancient Hurrian language - except from a few earlier Sumarian fragmentary instructional musical texts from c.1950 BCE (Musical Instructions for Lipit-Ishtar, King of Justice) the Hurrian Hymn it is the oldest written song yet known, in History!
Although about 29 musical texts were discovered at Ugarit, only this text, (text H6), was in a sufficient state of preservation to allow for modern academic musical reconstruction. In short, the Cuneiform text clearly indicated specific names for lyre strings, and their respective musical intervals - a sort of "Guitar tablature", for lyre!
Although discovered in modern day Syria, the Hurrians were not Syrian -- they came from modern day Anatolia. The Hurrian Hymn actually dates to the very end of the Hurrian civilisation (c.1400BCE) . The Hurrian civilization dates back to at least 3000 BCE. It is an incredible thought, that just maybe, the musical texts found at Ugarit, preserved precious sacred Hurrian music which may have already been thousands of years old, prior to their inscription for posterity, on the clay tablets found at Ugarit!
My arrangement here, is based on the that the original transcription of the melody, as interpreted by Prof. Richard Dumbrill. Here is a link to his book, "The Archeomusicology of the Near East": http://bit.ly/d3aovp
My new arrangement is played here, on an evocation of the ancient Biblical 10-string "Kinnor" Lyre from neighbouring Israel; an instrument almost tonally identical to the wooden asymmetric-shaped lyres played throughout the Middle East at this amazingly distant time...when the Pharaoh's still ruled ancient Egypt.
A photograph of the actual clay tablet on which the Hurrian Hymn was inscribed, can be seen here:
http://www.phoenicia.org/music.html
The melody is one of several academic interpretations, derived from the ambiguous Cuneiform text of the Hurrian language in which it was written. Although many of the meanings of the Hurrian language are now lost in the mists of time, it can be established that the fragmentary Hurrian Hymn which has been found on these precious clay tablets are dedicated to Nikkal; the wife of the moon god.
There are several such interpretations of this melody, but to me, Dr Dumbrill's interpretation just somehow sounds the most "authentic". Below is a link to the sheet music, as arranged by Clint Goss:
http://www.flutekey.com/pdf/HurrianTabLtd.pdf
In my new arrangement of the Hurrian Hymn, I have use my new hand-made lyre, with natural fibre wound silk strings in the bass - for a more authentic ancient timbre. I also use just intonation - the wonderfully pure tuning of antiquity, where unlike modern equal temperament, (where all the intervals in a scale are artificially made equal, to enable seamless transposition between different keys), in just intonation, the ratio of each specific interval in a scale is slightly different - precisely calculated by dividing the musical scale up into exact musical ratios. The result is wonderfully pure, intense-sounding intervals (unlike the out of tune "woowoowoo" sounding beat waves which can be heard when a triad is played in a piano tuned in equal temperament!)
I have attempted to illustrate an interesting diversity of ancient lyre playing techniques, ranging from the use of "block and strum" improvisation at the end, glissando's, trills & tremolos, and alternating between harp-like tones in the left hand produced by finger-plucked strings, and guitar-like tones in the right hand, produced by use of the plectrum. In the repeat, I also use a percussive style of lyre playing - hitting the strings with a small wooden baton instead of using a plectrum. This is an ancient Mesopotamian lyre playing technique, evident from illustrations of musicians in the Bas Reliefs of musicians in the ruins of the Palace of Nineveh, c.700 BCE.
There is a wonderful arrangement of the Hymn for piano & orchestra by the Syrian pianist & compsoer, Malek Jandali - however, maybe my new version, is the first time in 3400 years, that the Hurrian Hymn to Nikkal has once more, been performed on an actual lyre with natural fibre strings, in the just intonation of antiquity...
