PR2 light switch ROSCo (ROS Commander) behavior activated operating at the Georgia Tech Aware Home. The ARTag is used here as a proxy for custom light switch detectors allowing the robot to complete tasks autonomously. Expert interfaces, or "Photoshop for robots" systems such as ROSCo demonstrate the potential of involving non-roboticists in making robot behaviors. Behaviors like this used to be the subject of entire robotics papers; now they can be constructed in about half an hour by non-roboticists and shared on the web. This behavior is part of a teleoperation interface where repeatable actions such drawer opening are performed by the robot, and harder tasks are performed by human teleoperator. Using such systems based on shared autonomy, we hope to enable robots to perform more complex tasks more quickly and accurately. The Wall Street Journal reported that Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) is expected to announce a spin-off of its PC business and is also nearing a $10 billion deal to acquire U.K. software company Autonomy Corp. This report comes just hours before the tech company posts results for its third fiscal quarter. The company recently had a crop of bad news which included lowered corporate demand for their products as well as their TouchPad product having lower than expected sales. Analysts expect HP to post a profit of $1.09 per share on revenue of $31.2 billion. Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) has a potential upside of 42.1% based on a current price of $30.21 and an average consensus analyst price target of $42.92.

Chrome Beta For Android Gets Support For Experimental Data Compression On Google's Servers, Reduces Data Usage By 50% Google just announced that it has released a new feature for the Chrome Beta for Android that could speed up web browsing and save bandwidth for mobile Chrome users. With this proxy feature turned on, all your web requests will be routed through Google's servers, where the company then uses its PageSpeed libraries to compress and optimize the content. The actual connection to the browser from Google's servers is then handled by the SPDY protocol, which optimizes the content even more. Overall, using this proxy can reduce data usage by about 50%. Just using the PageSpeed libraries to transcode images to the Google-backed WebP format instead of JPEG and PNG makes a significant difference because 60% of all transferred bytes on the average page are images. The proxy, Google software engineer and "mobile web performance gearhead" Matt Welsh writes in the announcement today, "performs intelligent compression and minification of HTML, JavaScript and CSS resources, which removes unnecessary whitespace, comments, and other metadata which are not essential to render the page." DNS lookups will also be handled by the proxy and turning this feature on, Google notes, also automatically enables the browser's Safe Browsing mode. To turn this feature on, visit chrome://flags in your browser and select "Enable Data Compression Proxy." Even when this feature is turned on, Google will still route all of the secure HTTPS connections from your browser directly to their destination. They won't touch Google's servers. The same goes for incognito tabs. Here at Corporate Profile we love a good old scandal, especially when it is as high profile as this one. U.S. officials for the first time implicated hedge fund titan Steven Cohen, the founder of SAC Capital Advisors, in an alleged insider-trading scheme they said was the most lucrative ever to be charged. A former SAC Capital employee, Mathew Martoma, was charged with insider trading in a series of transactions, that Cohen had personally signed off on. Martoma helped Cohen's firm avoid losses and reap profits totaling $276 million in the summer of 2008 by using insider tips he got from a doctor about Elan Corp and Wyeth LLC. The $14 billion SAC Capital, which charges some of the highest fees in the industry, is up about 10 percent this year - double the performance of the average U.S. hedge fund. So far Cohen is denying any wrong doing. Looks like Hewlett-Packard didn't make its brightest decision, when it acquired U.K. software maker Autonomy for 11.1billion dollars. After thorouly going through the company's accounting papers, it has become apparent that HP has been duped into overpaying for one of its largest acquisitions, contributing to an $8.8 billion write-down and a huge quarterly loss. Autonomy is denying the allegations, accusing HP of trying to blame them for their bad management. In any case, I hear cooking books is the new delicacy the whole family will enjoy over Thanksgiving. And speaking of Thanksgiving delicacies, one very sick man here in NYC has been planning to put a girl on his dinner table for thanksgiving. Gilberto Valle, the NYPD officer, was caught by the feds as an alleged cannibal wannabe, but saw his alleged holiday hopes dashed when prosecutors said he'd planned to dine on human flesh for thanksgiving. According to his defender, it was all just a sick fantasy he was living out on the web together with fellow fetishists. I dunno better safe than sorry, lock him up I say. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and we should all be thankful for Sarah Josepha Hale, an American magazine editor, who persuaded Abraham Lincoln to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. Abraham Lincoln issued a 'Thanksgiving Proclamation' on October 3rd 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. So don't take this day off for granted, eat and drink until your bellies pop!
