The Death Of Mel Smith {1952 2013}
The Death Of Mel Smith {1952 2013}
Melvin Kenneth "Mel" Smith (3 December 1952 -- 19 July 2013) was an English comedian, writer, film director, producer and actor. He was best known for his work on the sketch comedy shows Not the Nine O'Clock News and Alas Smith and Jones along with his comedy partner Griff Rhys Jones. Smith and Jones founded Talkback, which grew to be one of the UK's largest producers of television comedy and light entertainment programming. While at Oxford University, Smith produced The Tempest, and performed at the Edinburgh Fringe with the Oxford University Dramatic Society. One year they shared a venue with the Cambridge Footlights, directed by John Lloyd. His ex-curricular activities while at university led to his joining the Royal Court Theatre production team in London, and then Bristol Old Vic. He was also associate director of Sheffield's Crucible Theatre for two years. Later, he directed a theatre production of Not in Front of the Audience. John Lloyd later got the opportunity to develop the idea that became the satirical BBC television series Not the Nine O'clock News. This was followed briefly by Smith and Goody (with Bob Goody) and then the comedy sketch series Alas Smith and Jones, co-starring Griff Rhys Jones, its title being a pun on the name of the American television series Alias Smith and Jones. In 1982, he starred as the lead role in ITV drama Muck and Brass where he played Tom Craig a ruthless property developer. In 1984, he appeared in the Minder episode 'A Star Is Gorn' playing the character Cyril Ash a record producer. He also guest starred on The Goodies episode Animals. At the end of the 1980s, he played the title role in the sitcom Colin's Sandwich (1987--89), playing a British Rail employee with aspirations to be a writer. In 1981, Smith and Griff Rhys Jones founded TalkBack Productions, a company that has produced many of the most significant British comedy shows of the past two decades, including Smack the Pony, Da Ali G Show, I'm Alan Partridge and Big Train. In 2000, the company was sold to Pearson for £62 million. Smith co-wrote and took the lead role in the space comedy Morons from Outer Space (1985), but the film failed to make much impact. His next cinema effort was better received as director of The Tall Guy (1989), giving Emma Thompson a major screen role. Perhaps his best-known film in America is Brain Donors, the 1992 update of the Marx Brothers film A Night at the Opera, starring Smith as a cheeky, opportunistic cab driver turned ballet promoter. Paramount Pictures considered this film the outstanding comedy of the year, but when the producers left Paramount for another studio, Paramount withdrew its support for the film. In 1987, Smith recorded a single with Kim Wilde for Comic Relief: a cover of the Christmas song Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree with some extra comedy lines written by Smith and Jones. It reached number three in the UK charts. He appeared in The Princess Bride as the Albino. Smith and Jones were reunited in 2005 for a review/revival of their earlier television series in The Smith And Jones Sketchbook. Smith joked that "Obviously, Griff's got more money than me so he came to work in a Rolls Royce and I came on a bicycle. But it was great fun to do and we are firmly committed to doing something new together. On the morning of 19 July 2013, London Ambulance Service was called to Smith's home in north-west London. Smith was confirmed dead by the ambulance crew, with a later post-mortem confirming death from a heart attack. Co-star Griff Rhys Jones said that "To everybody who ever met him, Mel was a force for life. He had a relish for it that seemed utterly inexhaustible". Rowan Atkinson who starred in Smith's film Bean said "He had a wonderfully generous and sympathetic presence both on and off screen". Stephen Fry noted that Smith "lived a full life, but was kind, funny and wonderful to know." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- published: 24 Jan 2014

MEASURED SACRIFICE
From Arbor Avenue Films.
In a dystopian future America embroiled in an unending "war on terror," a young woman named Terry, haunted by an immutable past, faces an impossible decision that will forever change her uncertain future. "Measured Sacrifice" is a dramatic low-tech science fiction film that follows the story of a young woman named Terry who faces a desperate situation and an impossible decision in a dystopian future America embroiled in an unending "war on terror."
SYNOPSIS
A young woman named Terry lives in poverty in a future America embroiled in an unending "war on terror." She faces an unplanned pregnancy, and must decide whether or not to enter a highly controversial government program that provides financial security for women in her situation. Entering the program will meet her financial needs but will put her at odds with everyone in her life and perhaps herself. Her journey toward a decision leads to an encounter with her estranged mother and causes Terry to face up to her haunted past and her uncertain future.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT from John Whitney:
“The idea for MEASURED SACRIFICE came to me after listening to a story on NPR regarding the enlistment trends of the US Military. The piece explained that the majority of the enlisted are from lower income communities and went on to argue that there is a disconnect between the powers in Washington, who are made up of the economic and intellectual elite, and those actually fighting our wars. I wanted to make a film that would examine that trend by asking what it would be like if wars were fought by people that had no connection to our society and the subsequent complacency the American people would have towards the war against terror.”
PRODUCER’S STATEMENT from Phil Garrett:
“With MEASURED SACRIFICE, our goal was to tell a relevant story that provokes questions while presenting an intimate, personal viewpoint and experience of a universal problem. As filmmakers, science fiction provides us the opportunity to craft a speculative narrative that can hold mirror up to the world, while providing a measure of distance from the issues for the audience. We hope that by setting our tale in a dystopian future, audiences will focus on the human condition presented in the film.”
"MEASURED SACRIFICE is an intense, powerful, important statement about how we try to come to terms with the out of control forces around us."

Yes. You heard what I said. All of it. It's all a bunch of lies. I know that it is a shocking claim to many, that our trusted officials in concert with our reliable mass media actually participated in deliberate deception designed to get us to accept war, but deal with it. I'm making it.
Our biggest moral obligation is ensuring that wars are not waged against people under false pretenses. War is the most disgusting and horrible thing you can inflict on any person.
As you read this article I am sure you will find there are a number of things that will surprise you. After researching the situation for months I assure you I have investigated as many sides of the story as possible. But I did reach a clear conclusion and I will not shy away from openly expressing the views that I have formed during this process.
What we have been seeing recently in the media, this time with a special emphasis on the online community, is the most sophisticated propaganda firework display we have ever witnessed. It’s no surprise so many people have been duped.
But a lie can travel the world before the truth has tied it’s shoe laces. But I believe that once the laces have been tied and the truth starts walking, eventually it’s gonna get to people.
There are at least two sides to every story
None of us could possibly have avoided hearing NATO’s side of the story and the reasons and justifications given for Gaddafi’s removal and how military intervention is necessary to protect Libyan citizens.
But are you sure you’ve heard both sides? Have you heard Gaddafi’s perspective on this issue? Or have you just heard “his side” as represented by the mainstream western media? If so I can start by telling you that his words, and the words of his son, Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi have been deliberately misinterpreted and edited out of context to create simple soundbite propaganda to influence people.
You will find that there is a completely different side of this story that is being completely ignored. It is not even being debated for it's merits, it simply is not talked about at all in the mainstream media.
Think about it. How much do you really know about Libya? Did you in all honesty know anything about the country before these events started unfolding? If I would have asked you back in February 10 questions about Libya and it’s affairs, how many do you think you would have answered correctly? And how much do you honestly know about what is going on there now?
I often find it intriguing how people tend to think they are qualified to give their view on things that in reality they know next to nothing about. They might have vague ideas generated by the mainstream media, biased textbooks and general pre-conceived notions, but not an actual thorough understanding of the country and it’s people and customs.
I had a discussion with a guy at a local bar the other day and I began the conversation by asking if he could tell me on what continent Libya was. Neither he nor his friend could answer correctly, picking Europe and Asia as their educated guesses. For some reason this guy still felt that his take on the situation was more accurate than mine, even as I told him I had been spending weeks investigating the matter. For those of you confused the correct answer is Africa.
I want to ask a simple question to make a simple case? Can you name me one current Libyan government official? You’re not allowed to say Gaddafi. Who holds the position of “Secretary of the General People’s Assembly” a position comparable to that of prime minister, although with a slightly different emphasis as he does not represent a political party and does not alone hold significant power. Did you even know that such a position exists in Libya and that he is elected by the people?
The less you know about something, the easier it is to deceive you.
My intention for exposing your potential and likely ignorance on this subject is not an attempt to show that I’m smarter or better than you. As I found out myself researching this article I knew remarkably little about Libya. And that is my point.
The mainstream media is focusing entirely on a set of news stories that have the specific intention of gathering support for military action and actively suppressing any story that would lead to people opposing it. This pattern will be exposed clearly as this article progresses.
It’s no wonder we don’t know much about Libya. Of course it gets confusing with all the different stories we hear of dictators and tyrants oversees. It is difficult to be an expert on all nations in the world. Just consider how many nations have existed and how long and rich each of their history is and how complex and

DISASTERS AND THE ROLE OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT PROFESSIONAL
The Japanese tsunami reminds us yet again of the harsh reality of so many natural disasters having a dramatic impact on both developing and developed nations, so it is an especially important time to focus on the contribution that built environment professionals can make. This presentation is based on Ian Davis’s experience as an architect with a special interest in shelter and disasters that extends almost 40 years with experience gained in 45 countries as a lecturer, consultant, researcher, writer, NGO director and advocate. The scope extends from pre-disaster risk reduction of buildings, settlements and infrastructure to the relief phase immediately after the disaster through to rebuilding communities and their built environment. This opening presentation in a series of talks will raise these issues in a public forum, investigating disaster risk reduction and mitigation as well as long-term strategies for people, civil societies, local governments, and countries to deal with the increasing numbers of vulnerable people globally.
Key questions were raised concerning ethics and development, education and practice. This was followed by discussion concerning appropriate roles for built environment professionals in disaster contexts as well as for such bodies as Architecture Sans Frontières-UK and Engineers against Poverty.
The final part of Davis’s presentation explored some of the common problems facing architects, engineers and planners as well as the opportunities they can grasp to contribute in an effective manner within the rapidly expanding field of disaster risk management.

GRID13: Sarah Harper - Who Wants to Live Forever
The first person to live to be 200 years old may already have been born. Professor Sarah Harper is wrestling with some of our most challenging questions: the growth in extreme longevity and fall in fertility. How will it impact our lives and societies? A professor of gerontology at the University of Oxford, she leads key demographers, economists, anthropologists, philosophers and environmentalists in addressing the dramatic demographic change.
