Salar de Uyuni Tours in Bolivia
South East of Bolivia is the location of the biggest Salt Flat in the world, "Uyuni Salt Flat. Music: Cliff Martinez - I that everybody wants (from the motion picture Solaris) Credits: Ayrton Orio and Sharon Kendelker In a world where the time flies, where people are required to work on a fast speed and stress is more and more common in humans, the choice of where to go gives now priority to places that offered silence and tranquility. In Bolivia, near the border with Chile, there is a small community where the main economic activities apart from llama-herding and quinua-farming, is mining salt. Uyuni Salt Lake is a peculiar place. About 40000 years ago, this arid area used to be part of a lake that covered a large swath of the Andes. Nowadays it is The World's Biggest Salt Desert. South East of Bolivia is the location of the biggest Salt Flat in the world, "Uyuni Salt Flat". The crust of salt covers a surface of 10.582 Km2. of extension, at an altittude of 3.653 meters above sea level, like a static sea touched by by the southern winds. Like any other desert, the weather conditions in Uyuni Bolivia are extreme, from freezing night temperatures to fierce desert sun. In the Salar itself, you can find several hotels which have been made from salt bricks, including beds, chairs and cocktail bars. All is made from salt! Furthermore, the Salar de Uyuni has impressive views. A flat whiteness, fringed by the peaks of mountains on the horizon beneath a bright blue sky can be ...

good.is With an area about the size of New Jersey, Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni salt flat is known as the flattest place on earth. So when NASA needs to calibrate the satellite it uses to measure the melting of the polar ice caps, they point the ICESat's laser at the Salar de Uyuni first. One of earth's fascinating natural phenomena helping us gauge the fate of another. An original GOOD Video.

Longboarding, LongTreks Episode 16: Salar de Uyuni
After completing our 2500 km trek from Lima, Peru to Potosi, Bolivia we had some time to kill. We ventured around on flying carpets and came to the Salar de Uyuni, the largest Salt Flat in the World. We spent 2 days and 2 nights skating and sleeping on salt. To our luck we came during the wet season so most of it had a centimeter of water on top of the salt making the reflections amazing and skating a bit wet. Where else in the world can you skate through clouds, hahaha. We did find dry spots on the outside perimeter of the salt flat, which made traveling easier. The salt actually slid and rod fairly well, a bit cushy. Our clothes, shoes and boards however took a good beating. The salt had shrivel up our pants and made our shoes turn ¼ size smaller, haha. Some of the most amazing sunsets I have ever seen. Truly an amazing place, if you ever get the opportunity I would go there, Salar de Uyuni in BOLIVIA.

Uyuni Salt Flats - Bolivia. We dare you to come. ENJOY BOLIVIA
Salar de Uyuni (or Salar de Thunupa) is the world's largest salt flat at 10582 km² (4085 square miles). It is located in the Potosí and Oruro departments in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes, 3650 meters high. The major minerals in the salar are halite, gypsum and half of the worlds lithium can also be found here. Some 40000 years ago, the area was part of Lake Minchin, a giant prehistoric lake. When the lake dried, it left behind two modern lakes, Poopó Lake and Uru Uru Lake, and two major salt deserts, Salar de Coipasa and the larger Uyuni, that is roughly 25 times the size of the Bonneville Salt Flats in the United States. This semidesertic region, of volcanic lands encloses in its interior natural resources of extraordinary beauty united by a surprising characteristic: the color. The Uyuni Salt Flat and the Heavenly, Yellow, Green, and Red lakes are its better exponents. These names are given because the different tones they exhibit due to the algae that contain each one, like the phitoplankton (dunaliella algae) as the movement of the wind and the specific time of the day. Complementary there are geysers, rocky formations and volcanic peaks that makes you feel you are living in the earth formation era. Like any other desert, the weather conditions in Uyuni Bolivia are extreme, from freezing night temperatures to fierce desert sun. Surrounded by mountains and the sky like unique border, the Salar allows observing images in suspension for the solar ...

Pan American Highway, Long road to Uyuni, Bolivia
The road from Tilcara in Argentina to Uyuni in Bolivia was certainly one of the longest and hardest days riding I have ever done in my life. The road from Tilcara to the border and a few miles beyond was magical but then it all turned to gravel and dust. From then the road simply became a dirt track across the mountains. It was rough with mighty large holes and stones and by the end of it I was cursing it. Now I look back and simply want to return for another adventure over that road. My first thoughts of Uyuni was it looked like a rubish tip but the few good and scenic areas around there made it all worth it. As you will see at the end of the clip the saltflats were simply amazing and worth all the rough roads in getting there.

Uyuni Salt Desert
The trip into Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni in April 2004 was one of the highlights my travels in Latin America and an absolute "must see" if you are visiting Bolivia. The tour is actually much more than just a trip to the salt desert; in four days we went from Uyuni to the Chile border and back. Salar de Uyuni is located at 3653m over sea level and originates from a dried up prehistoric salt lake. It is the world's largest salt flat covering an area of about 12.000m2. Before we entered the desert we had a stop at the Train Cemetery; a weird place with a bunch of stranded steam locomotives. The salt desert is a beautiful sight with "endless" plains of white salt with octagon patterns. We visited a place where salt was extracted into small pyramids, had lunch by a hotel made of salt and walked around on the amazing Isla Pescadores, a coral island dotted with large cactuses (the largest was 12m high and 1200 years old!). The second day we stopped at a nice view point by Volcan Ollague, saw the "5 lakes" with lots of flamingoes and by some strange green rocks we saw a colony of Vizcachas (a long-tailed rodent related to the chinchillas). The desert landscape changed all the time and by the road we could see herds of vicuñas (wild llama relative), spectacular mountains and strange geological shapes, including a large "stone tree". The night by Lake Colorado was freezing cold with sub zero temperatures. It was still dark when we got up and went to Sol de Mañana, a geyser at ...

Laura flies over Salar de Uyuni or is it towards heaven?
One of the highlights of the rainy season is that the sky above the Salar is perfectly reflected in the lake. This gives you the feeling of weightlessness and you almost start believing you can fly around the Salar de Uyuni. See how elegant Laura is giving it a try!
