A day trip to Skerries
Out Skerries, known locally as Da Skerries or just Skerries, are a small low-lying trio of islands – Housay, Bruray and Grunay – that lies 13 miles off Shetland’s east coast, and four miles northeast of Whalsay. The island is home to around 30 people who are largely dependent on the fishing industry. Bruray and Housay are connected via a road bridge, and Grunay is now uninhabited, although the remains of the lighthouse buildings associated with the dominating Bound Skerry Lighthouse can still be seen across the harbour.
We chose to travel in on a Friday, catching the 11 am ferry from Vidlin, a journey that takes around an hour and a half and must be booked in advance. We took the car, however it is definitely not necessary as the island road is only a mile or so long. Our return ferry was...

The Cinema on the Edge of the World | 4,700km to Out Skerries (Shetland)
4,700km of cycling to the Uk’s most remote cinema - the Schoolhouse Cinema on Out Skerries in the Shetland Islands.
Out Skerries is an isolated island community in Shetland. Home to just 23 people, it is the Easternmost archipelago in Shetland, and is one of the most remote communities in the UK. Being so far from anywhere, it’s the last place you’d expect to find a movie theatre. So how on earth did the Schoolhouse Cinema come to be?
Out Skerries comes from the Old Norse words " Austr" (East) and "Sker" (an isolated rock in the sea). The islands have seen industry come and go, and survived until today mostly through fishing in the North Sea, and has continued to endure thanks to the to the resilience of the locals. Now, the decline of Skerries is threatening the way of life here. The O...

Short TakeOff and Landing operations at Out Skerries.
Inspired by Alaskan Short TakeOff and Landing competition videos, today I had some Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 fun at Out Skerries, EG78, GB, on a Savage Cub with thundra wheels.
There's no slow motion in the video, the wind is blowing at 40kts from 275°.
As I've flown the real aircraft with same wheels for some hours here in Italy, I must admit that the flight dynamics are pretty good and close to the real thing (except for the more powerful than standard engine).
Soundtrack written and performed by me.

The ferry also operates from Lerwick two days a week (Tuesday and Thursday) but does not return to Lerwick that day, so you would need to bring a car to travel back from either Vidlin or Laxo Ferry Terminal.

Now, the decline of Skerries is threatening the way of life here. The Out Skerries Airport, with the world's smallest commercial runway, closed down, along with Skerries School and the Skerries fish factory. But is there hope? Learn how this close-knit community has weathered storms of economic hardship and isolation, yet still holds onto its traditions and tight bonds. This was the closing chapter on an unforgettable cycling adventure, that taught us more about our home country and its neighbours than we could ever express. And for our final stop on this journey, we’d have the chance to truly get to know this windswept archipelago in the North Sea; Out Skerries.
To everyone who made this project possible, thank you!
