Snap! ~ Rhythm Is A Dancer
"Rhythm Is a Dancer" is a song recorded by the act Snap!, released as a single in the second quarter of 1992, from the album The Madman's Return. It was written by Benito Benitez, John 'Virgo' Garrett III (aliases for German producers Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti), Thea Austin and Durron Butler and produced by Snap! It achieved a huge success in many countries, topping the charts in France, Ireland Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and the UK.
The track features lead vocals by Thea Austin, and a rap from Turbo B, containing the line "I'm serious as cancer when I say rhythm is a dancer". The line, widely felt to be somewhat tasteless, has become infamous as it regularly features in polls to find the worst song lyric of all time. However, this line has been used extensively in hip hop since at least 1987 (J.V.C.F.O.R.C.E.'s 1987 release 'Strong Island' features the lyric) - an album of the same name was released in 1989 by Red, Black and Green, and Rakim has used it more than once ("I Ain't No Joke", "Eric B is President").
"Rhythm Is a Dancer" is based on the main melody of the track "Auto-Man" from the early 1980s electro band Newcleus.
According to Miz hit. tubes, a book which analyses the French chart, "this discotheque song alternates the female singing of the chorus with the fluid rap and set back from the verses. These are tinged with a resonant sonority, with astonishment melancholic relents for a hit dance. That gives to the whole a very particular colouring; almost nostalgia[1]".
The music video for "Rhythm Is a Dancer" was directed by Howard Greenhalgh and shows singer Thea Austin and a backup band at a rocket-type factory filled with smoke. Austin and her group perform the song on elevated platforms while a group of dancers dance on a closed ground platform below them. Interpersed throughout these scenes are animated shots of flickering astrology maps and animated figures dancing. [info courtesy: wikipedia.org]

FUTURE PROOF
FUTURE PROOF - 2011 A/NZ PromaxBDA Opener
The DMC Initiative (DMCI) developed this piece as a response to the 2011 A/NZ PromaxBDA Conference title of Future Proof.
Our approach was to focus not on futuristic notions but to consider that which is timeless. People, the expression of self and the interactions between each other are timeless qualities relevant to creativity, no matter what the future holds.
The concept started quite fluidly, by briefing a variety of dancers, with individual performance styles, to develop choreography based on the concepts of growth, sharing, sending and receiving.
Directed by Nathan Drabsch, the performances were shot over one day using two RED Epic cameras, capturing the action at high speed. All design, editing and post production was done in-house by The DMCI team. We worked closely with composers and audio designers Mark Brandis & Jeff Black from ism studios, to create a unique score that perfectly compliments the performances.
As a whole, the focus is on the dancers as they create and interact with abstract forms in a vast unknown world. Their own movements determine the creation and final destruction of these elements. Their own paths of communication and creative expression have come full circle, and all that remains is the individual.

The V Motion Project
The Motion Project was a collaboration between a lot of clever creative people working together to create a machine that turns motion into music. The client for the project, Frucor (makers of V energy drink), together with their agency Colenso BBDO, kitted-out a warehouse space for this project to grow in and gathered together a group of talented people from a number of creative fields.
http://www.v.co.nz/#the-motion-project
We created and designed the live visual spectacle with a music video being produced from the results. We wanted it to be clear that the technology was real and actually being played live. The interface plays a key role in illustrating the idea of the instrument and we designed it to highlight the audio being controlled by the dancer. Design elements like real time tracking and samples being drawn on as they are played all add to authenticity of the performance. The visuals are all created live and the music video is essentially a real document of the night.
