James Raymond Leonard, Sr. (February 14, 1910 – November 28, 1993) was an American football running back in the National Football League for the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1945.
Leonard was a two sport star at the University of Notre Dame during the 1930s, both as a pitcher in baseball and a fullback in football. After Notre Dame he played for the Philadelphia Eagles for three seasons and was team captain in 1935 and 1936. He left the Eagles to restart the football program at Saint Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania in 1937.
In 1942 he joined the NFL again as a staff coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, then served as an assistant at the College of the Holy Cross in 1943 before returning to the Steelers as head coach during the 1945 campaign. In 1947 he restarted the football program at Saint Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania. It was stopped because of World War II. He finished his career as the head coach of Villanova University from 1949 to 1950.

Plot: After a boy is killed while attempting an escape from the Garfield State School, Robert Dean, assistant warden of the state penitentiary, is appointed superintendent of the reformatory. Some moves he makes to lessen that harsh conditions immediately wins him the friendship of the kindly resident physician, Dr. Hector Blakely and the school psychiatrist, Dr. Adele Webster. A riot wrecks the mess hall, and Dean, learning of the bad food served the boys, orders enough flapjacks made to fill their empty stomachs. He them makes the crooked food contractors eat their own wares. Dean then dismisses all of the guards after he discovers their chief, Mac Grady, forcing little Fibber Regan to eat soap as a cure for lying. The boys are told they can manage themselves and Dean places them on their honor not to escape. Grady, who wants Dean's job, alters commitment papers and sends incorrigible Louie Miller to Garfield, and orders him to make trouble. Dean overhears Pinkie Leonard refusing to escape from the school, despite the orders of his ex-convict father Jim Leonard. Pinkey gets into a fight with Louie when the latter slurs Dean's system. Because he will not be a snitch and explain the cause of the fight, Pinkie is sent to the Lost Privileges Ward, which already houses Louie and Fibber. Louie persuades Fibber to make an escape and Pinkie follows in an effort to bring them back. He is knocked unconscious with a rock, and Louie disappears into the surrounding swamps. Pinkey, also thought to be an escapee, is brought back to Garfield and Louie drowns in the swamp. The newspapers headline the failure of the honor system, and Dean is summoned to a meeting with Governor Spaulding.

Friend and pioneering storm chaser Jim Leonard shares his opinions on the 1984 spring storm season with David Hoadley in this May 1984 videotape. Afterwards, a storm videotape viewing party, a new phenomenon at the time, transpired at the Norman, Oklahoma residence of Randy Zipser. This video sequence was one of the earliest introductions I personally had to Jim, courtesy of Dave from an early compilation provided to me several years ago.
