Friend and pioneering storm chaser Jim Leonard shares his opinions on the 1984 spring storm season with David Hoadley in this May 1984 videotape. Afterwards, a storm videotape viewing party, a new phenomenon at the time, transpired at the Norman, Oklahoma residence of Randy Zipser.
This video sequence was one of the earliest introductions I personally had to Jim, courtesy of Dave from an early compilation provided to me several years ago. Dave was kind enough to share the original raw videotape with me for Storm Chasing: The Anthology.
Jim Leonard passed away on the morning of November 3, 2014 from stage four colon cancer. I first met Jim in 1999 and chased together in subsequent years. His jubilant enthusiasm for all forms of severe wind (hurricanes, typhoons, tornadoes, waterspouts, derechos), kindness, and energy will be greatly missed on the Plains and Tropics.
The following eloquent words of David Hoadley, who took this video, apply directly to the moments preserved on this VHS videotape thirty years ago.

A solemn day for the storm chasing community and for friends of Jim Leonard. He, Chuck Robertson, Randy Zipser and I went way back to the early days of chasing --Randy to 1976 and Chuck and Jim to at least 1981.
When we didn’t hang out together on hot dusty farm roads, waiting for the towers to go up, we were likely together at Randy’s Norman residence in the evening. Happily scattered on sofas, in chairs and across the floor, we munched chips and drank cokes, watching 8mm movies on television long after sunset. “Ooohs” and “Aaahs” came with rapid comments and pointing fingers at developing tornadoes, when little more than bumps in the clouds. A few days and one or two evenings in the spring, then another long year until we saw each other again. But we stayed in touch by phone (yes, land lines), letters (actual mail), and exchanges of slides and video tapes (silent). Many of Jim’s great chases since 1981 are now on my storm history shelves.
A strong wind passed through here over the weekend with the changing of the season, taking down most of the leaves, letting the morning sun through, and bringing the horizon closer. I am thinking of Jim now, the strong wind of many hurricanes and tornadoes having spun through his life -at this passing of his season. Now the memories gather as do the many colors of autumn, and --somehow-- the sun shines brightly again this morning. -- David

Jim Leonard, aka "Cyclone Jim", (February 17, 1950 ‒ November 3, 2014) was an American professional storm chaser, photographer, and videographer. Intercepting severe weather including thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes and typhoons,[1] he was among the earliest storm chasers. He was the first to photograph an anticyclonic tornado.[2]
Leonard, the son of Arthur H. Leonard, Jr. and Marjorie Irene Leonard,[3] was from south Florida and beginning in 1971 chased tropical cyclones in the United States and the Caribbean, as well as on Guam and Hawaii.[4] He sometimes moved to Guam during typhoon season. He was considered a preeminent tropical cyclone chaser. Leonard began chasing thunderstorms in 1974 and traveled across the Great Plains as well as locally in Florida where sea breeze interactions and waterspouts are common in summer.[5] He sometimes moved to Oklahoma during supercell season in Tornado Alley.[6] Leonard's photographs, films and videos have been licensed widely and featured prominently around the world. He was featured in numerous television broadcasts and magazine articles. He was a contributor to Storm Track magazine and his photographs appeared frequently in Weatherwise and other publications. Leonard was also an early and respected storm chasing tour guide, working with Charles Edwards for Cloud 9 Tours, where George Kourounis and Mike Theiss also are guides.

Jim Leonard once again hosted the annual chaser BBQ at his place on Islamorada in the beautiful Florida Keys on Saturday, March 20th, 2010. What a great way to kick off the spring storm season! This years festivities included burgers, hot dogs and TONS of chaser videos! Chasers from all over the country attended including Matt Crowther, Betsy Abrams, Mike Laca, Chris Downs, Derek Sibley, Chris Kridler, Dave Lewison, Jack Beven, Jason Foster, Jeff Gammons, Chris Collura, Tim Millar, Stephen Sponsler, Mike Theiss, Jim Edds and of course...yours truly!
A blast was had by all who attended. Dave, Stephanie, Cecelia and I hung around an extra day and after dinner Sunday night, we were treated to an intense line of thunderstorms as a cold front plowed on through the Keys. What a great way to cap off a perfect weekend!

Jim Leonard
James Raymond Leonard, Sr. (February 14, 1910 – November 28, 1993) was an American football running back in the National Football League for the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1945.
Leonard was a two sport star at the University of Notre Dame during the 1930s, both as a pitcher in baseball and a fullback in football. After Notre Dame he played for the Philadelphia Eagles for three seasons and was team captain in 1935 and 1936. He left the Eagles to restart the football program at Saint Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania in 1937.
In 1942 he joined the NFL again as a staff coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, then served as an assistant at the College of the Holy Cross in 1943 before returning to the Steelers as head coach during the 1945 campaign. In 1947 he restarted the football program at Saint Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania. It was stopped because of World War II. He finished his career as the head coach of Villanova University from 1949 to 1950.

Plot: After a boy is killed while attempting an escape from the Garfield State School, Robert Dean, assistant warden of the state penitentiary, is appointed superintendent of the reformatory. Some moves he makes to lessen that harsh conditions immediately wins him the friendship of the kindly resident physician, Dr. Hector Blakely and the school psychiatrist, Dr. Adele Webster. A riot wrecks the mess hall, and Dean, learning of the bad food served the boys, orders enough flapjacks made to fill their empty stomachs. He them makes the crooked food contractors eat their own wares. Dean then dismisses all of the guards after he discovers their chief, Mac Grady, forcing little Fibber Regan to eat soap as a cure for lying. The boys are told they can manage themselves and Dean places them on their honor not to escape. Grady, who wants Dean's job, alters commitment papers and sends incorrigible Louie Miller to Garfield, and orders him to make trouble. Dean overhears Pinkie Leonard refusing to escape from the school, despite the orders of his ex-convict father Jim Leonard. Pinkey gets into a fight with Louie when the latter slurs Dean's system. Because he will not be a snitch and explain the cause of the fight, Pinkie is sent to the Lost Privileges Ward, which already houses Louie and Fibber. Louie persuades Fibber to make an escape and Pinkie follows in an effort to bring them back. He is knocked unconscious with a rock, and Louie disappears into the surrounding swamps. Pinkey, also thought to be an escapee, is brought back to Garfield and Louie drowns in the swamp. The newspapers headline the failure of the honor system, and Dean is summoned to a meeting with Governor Spaulding.

Friend and pioneering storm chaser Jim Leonard shares his opinions on the 1984 spring storm season with David Hoadley in this May 1984 videotape. Afterwards, a storm videotape viewing party, a new phenomenon at the time, transpired at the Norman, Oklahoma residence of Randy Zipser.
This video sequence was one of the earliest introductions I personally had to Jim, courtesy of Dave from an early compilation provided to me several years ago. Dave was kind enough to share the original raw videotape with me for Storm Chasing: The Anthology.
Jim Leonard passed away on the morning of November 3, 2014 from stage four colon cancer. I first met Jim in 1999 and chased together in subsequent years. His jubilant enthusiasm for all forms of severe wind (hurricanes, typhoons, tornadoes, waterspouts, derechos), kindness, and energy will be greatly missed on the Plains and Tropics.
The following eloquent words of David Hoadley, who took this video, apply directly to the moments preserved on this VHS videotape thirty years ago.

A solemn day for the storm chasing community and for friends of Jim Leonard. He, Chuck Robertson, Randy Zipser and I went way back to the early days of chasing --Randy to 1976 and Chuck and Jim to at least 1981.
When we didn’t hang out together on hot dusty farm roads, waiting for the towers to go up, we were likely together at Randy’s Norman residence in the evening. Happily scattered on sofas, in chairs and across the floor, we munched chips and drank cokes, watching 8mm movies on television long after sunset. “Ooohs” and “Aaahs” came with rapid comments and pointing fingers at developing tornadoes, when little more than bumps in the clouds. A few days and one or two evenings in the spring, then another long year until we saw each other again. But we stayed in touch by phone (yes, land lines), letters (actual mail), and exchanges of slides and video tapes (silent). Many of Jim’s great chases since 1981 are now on my storm history shelves.
A strong wind passed through here over the weekend with the changing of the season, taking down most of the leaves, letting the morning sun through, and bringing the horizon closer. I am thinking of Jim now, the strong wind of many hurricanes and tornadoes having spun through his life -at this passing of his season. Now the memories gather as do the many colors of autumn, and --somehow-- the sun shines brightly again this morning. -- David

Jim Leonard, aka "Cyclone Jim", (February 17, 1950 ‒ November 3, 2014) was an American professional storm chaser, photographer, and videographer. Intercepting severe weather including thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes and typhoons,[1] he was among the earliest storm chasers. He was the first to photograph an anticyclonic tornado.[2]
Leonard, the son of Arthur H. Leonard, Jr. and Marjorie Irene Leonard,[3] was from south Florida and beginning in 1971 chased tropical cyclones in the United States and the Caribbean, as well as on Guam and Hawaii.[4] He sometimes moved to Guam during typhoon season. He was considered a preeminent tropical cyclone chaser. Leonard began chasing thunderstorms in 1974 and traveled across the Great Plains as well as locally in Florida where sea breeze interactions and waterspouts are common in summer.[5] He sometimes moved to Oklahoma during supercell season in Tornado Alley.[6] Leonard's photographs, films and videos have been licensed widely and featured prominently around the world. Jim Leonard once again hosted the annual chaser BBQ at his place on Islamorada in the beautiful Florida Keys on Saturday, March 20th, 2010. What a great way to kick off the spring storm season! This years festivities included burgers, hot dogs and TONS of chaser videos! Chasers from all over the country attended including Matt Crowther, Betsy Abrams, Mike Laca, Chris Downs, Derek Sibley, Chris Kridler, Dave Lewison, Jack Beven, Jason Foster, Jeff Gammons, Chris Collura, Tim Millar, Stephen Sponsler, Mike Theiss, Jim Edds and of course...yours truly!
