Museum of Contemporary Art, Chief Curator Michael Darling
Chief Curator of the Museum of Contermporary Art, Michael Darling takes host of Fear No ART, Elysabeth Alfano, on a private tour at the MCA. Michael speaks candidly and refreshingly personably about how important art is in contemporary society. While they walk the corridors of the museum and throughout the superb exhibit, "Pandora's Box: Joseph Cornell Unlocks the MCA Collection", Mr. Darling talks about the artist struggle, the importance of the museum creating a safe space to ask questions, and about the clear, concise and non-convoluted ways we can all relate to art. We also get a one-on-one discussion/explanation of some of the museums most famous pieces by Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg, plus a few art collecting tips for the novice and the connoisseur alike. Enjoy this warm and accessible art lesson and one-on-one private tour.

Defining Value in Today's Contemporary Art Market: Candace Worth at TEDxChelsea
Candace Worth's talk at the TEDxChelsea conference, held June 1, 2012 at the School of Visual Arts. The conference theme was "The true value of art is seldom what someone is willing to pay for it." For more information or to apply for 2013, please go to TEDxChelsea.org.
Candace Worth founded Worth Art Advisory in 2001 to bridge the gap between contemporary art collectors and the increasingly exclusive art world establishment. Candace began her career in the Contemporary Art Department at Christie's auction house in the early 1990s. Since then, she has worked for a blue-chip gallery in New York City as well as an internet-based art consultancy. She now buys artwork for a highly diverse group of clients at all price levels, sourcing most of the work from across the United States and Europe. Candace currently serves on the board of the Drawing Center in New York City and has lectured on issues related to the contemporary art market at several art institutions, including the Rhode Island School of Design. Candace received her BA in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania and continued her studies in Art History at the Graduate School of Arts at Columbia University. worthartadvisory.com

"What Was Contemporary Art?: An Introduction"
THE DR. ALLEN W. ROOT CONTEMPORARY ART DISTINGUISHED LECTURESHIP
Richard Meyer, Associate Professor, Art History and Fine Arts
Director, The Contemporary Project University of Southern California
Contemporary art in the early twenty-first century is often discussed as though it were a radically new phenomenon unmoored from history. Yet all works of art were once contemporary to the artist and culture that produced them. Here Richard Meyer reclaims the contemporary from historical amnesia, exploring episodes in the study, exhibition, and reception of early-twentieth-century art and visual culture.

The Elaine Terner Cooper Education Fund:
Conversations with Contemporary Artists
Nicola López
Tuesday, October 18, 2011, 6:30 pm
Nicola López (b. 1975, Santa Fe, New Mexico) works with printmaking, drawing, and installation to describe and reconfigure our contemporary and increasingly urban landscape. Her sculptural prints and intricate constructions investigate the nature of place and mankind's complex relation to it. In Landscape X, created as part of the Guggenheim's ongoing Intervals series, López assembles a site-specific sculptural collage environment on view in three levels of the rotunda. Utilizing elements from the construction site as a point of inception, López employs symbols of urban infrastructure to craft a graphic expanse of forms which boldly expand into the Frank Lloyd Wright space.
Inaugurated in 2001, this lecture series features artists reflecting on their work and current issues in the art world. Rechristened in spring 2006 as the Elaine Terner Cooper Education Fund: Conversations with Contemporary Artists, these talks provide an opportunity for the public to hear from the most innovative international artists working today and to learn about their creative processes. Both established and emerging artists working in all mediums have participated in this enlightening program. The roster has included Slater Bradley, Tacita Dean, Roni Horn, Emily Jacir, Christian Marclay, Aleksandra Mir, Catherine Opie, Tino Sehgal, and others.

Translation of video - Chantal Pontbriand
White text on black background:
Chantal Pontbriand, founder and director of the contemporary art magazine Parachute,
has been a professional art critic and curator since 1975.
Early on, she became interested in globalization and cultural hybrids,
and produced numerous major contemporary art events
that brought together Canadian and international artists,
including the Festival International de la Nouvelle Dance (FIND).
She is in involved in publishing and programming video,
performance, dance, music and seminars,
as well as in research and experimentation
with new modes of exhibition and presentation.
In 2013, she received the Governor General's Award
for her exceptional contribution to the visual and media arts.
Narrative text:
What I find fascinating is the notion of difference. Difference is what makes culture. In all of my activities -- exhibitions, events, writing -- I am searching for ways to understand and elucidate this idea of difference.
This search for meaning, this striving to make sense of things, is my passion as a live curator. That seems to have become the name I've been given over the years, and I think that it is an apt description of the way I take an interest in life, and how I'm interested in life through culture.
At the heart of my work is the question of hospitality. What I mean by this is the idea of welcoming the other. Welcoming difference, expanding borders -- both artistic and geopolitical -- is very important. And so I've always worked on a global scale, trying to create interfaces between the local and the global, precisely so that I can show the differences.
In reality, I've realized that the crux of my work is essentially the practice of knowledge or knowledges (or what we call in English knowledge production, or even knowledge management), since in all the adventures I've enjoyed via institutions -- Parachute, the dance festival -- I've gained expertise in strategic development that can be useful for any new contemporary art organizations emerging around the world today.
For me, the institution is extremely important. It's a place that assembles, a place that makes it possible to share and develop. In fact, an institution should be a permanent laboratory of life ... a construction site in perpetual evolution.

Alison Watt: 'Phantom' | Contemporary Artists | The National Gallery, London
Alison Watt is the seventh Associate Artist at the National Gallery, and the youngest in the scheme's history.
Born in Greenock in 1965, Watt is a painter who studied at the Glasgow School of Art. In 2000 she became the youngest artist to be offered a solo exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
Her recent work demonstrates a deep fascination with the possibilities of the suggestive power of fabric. A childhood trip to London to visit the National Gallery resulted in a lifelong admiration for Ingres's 1856 portrait 'Madame Moitessier', a picture that has been a constant source of inspiration for her.
