Psychrophilic Methanogenic Bacteria at Everest Base Camp
In January of 2010 Dr. TH Culhane travelled to Cordova Alaska to work with Dr. Katey Walter Anthony (U Fairbanks) on understanding how to harness psychrophilic bacteria for biogas as part of the first National Geographic/Blackstone Ranch Innovation Grant for Emerging Explorers. Now, in May of 2011, Dr. Culhane is on a second Blackstone Grant with Dr. Alton Byers and is looking at potential psychrophilic methanogens in the glacial lakes of the Himalayas, particularly at Everest Base Camp. The worry is that as the glacial lakes melt and the permafrost raises in temperature the psychrophiles will release methane from the organic Shilajeet sediments, compounding the climate change problem at the top of the world. (A bottle of sediment containing suspected psychrophiles from the pond in this video was brought back to Germany by Dr. Culhane. Sugar introduced into the bottle yielded bubbling on several occasions and several flame tests produced a "popping" noise indicative of combustion. It is almost certain that the gas being produced by the bacteria brought back from Everest is methane; this has profound implications for climate science given the number of glacial lakes now exposed to higher temperatures.)

Building a home for psychrophiles
On February 18 2011 a 1.5 liter soda bottle filled with woodchips and slurry from our psychhrophilic biodigester 4 at Cordova High School in Alaska arrived at our Solar Cities office in Essen Germany. It had been shipped out on November 2, 2010 by Science Instructor Adam Low and hand carried by Dr. Katey Walter to colleagues at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena who had then kept it in a cool room for us and then shipped it by post. The bacteria arrived in good health and we opened the bottle to find a good head of pressure and flammable methane. We then poured all the liquid from the bottle into the new digestor (a 60 liter tank shown in this video), then sealed the digestor, then filled the bottle up again with cool water, poured that into the mouth of the digestor (into stomach 1) and then sealed the digestor. We then filled the bottle again and sealed it. Hopefully the bacteria on the wood chips in the bottle will regenerate. We experiment here with a simpler small digestor design. We added two small pieces of rock candy to the 1st stomach to give the bacteria something to eat and hopeful use to grow.

Photobacterium From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Photobacterium Scientific classification Kingdom: Bacteria Phylum: Proteobacteria Class: Gammaproteobacteria Order: Vibrionales Family: Vibrionaceae Genus: Photobacterium Species P. leiognathi P. phosphoreum P. profundum P. damselae subsp. piscicida P. damselae subsp. damsela Photobacterium is a genus of gram-negative bacteria in the family Vibrionaceae. Members of the genus are bioluminescent, that is they have the ability to emit light. Many species, including Photobacterium leiognathi and Photobacterium phosphoreum, live in symbiosis with marine organisms. Species such as Photobacterium profundum are adapted for optimal growth in the deep cold seas making it both a psychrophile (an organism capable of growth and reproduction in cold temperatures) and a piezophile (an organism which thrives at high pressures). Gods and Monsters (1998) - Movie Trailer
A gardener, Clay Boone (Brendan Fraser), starts working on the yard of James Whale (Ian McKellen), hired by Whale's housekeeper Hanna (Lynn Redgrave). James is impressed by Clay and asks him to pose for him. Clay is reluctant at first and balks at taking his shirt off for James, but he does so. James begins sketching and the two begin talking about their lives and finding they have some things in common. At this time, James has been retired from Hollywood for at least a decade and for a year now has been suffering from strokes. He also suffers through reminiscences of World War I and the making of The Bride of Frankenstein. James is visited by a starstruck college student who wishes to interview him. James wants to talk about his childhood, his service in World War I, etc., but the young man only cares to hear about the Frankenstein films. James will only answer those questions if the young man will gradually undress. The interview is cut short when James faints and his housekeeper gives him a Luminal (phenobarbital) pill. Clay begins researching Whale's film career, and is impressed. At his favorite bar, Clay and his friends watch Bride of Frankenstein on TV. His friends laugh, his girlfriend is unimpressed but Clay is interested. His girlfriend speculates that James is just an old fruit pretending to be famous to get into Clay's pants. Hanna confirms that that Whale is homosexual. At first Clay declines James' offer for another sitting fee, but acquiesces and even talks ...
