***READ THIS***
I put these videos online to share the joys that I personally get out of living with a Fennec. Yes, this is a desert animal living indoors... In the desert these foxes experience both extreme heat and cold chilly nights... It is totally fine for him to live in a 70 degree house year round. Cairo is two years and some months old now (as I write this) and still a healthy fox. I don't care about the opinions of ignorant people... I've been living with this fox for 2 years, and I guarantee you all that I know much more about him and his lifestyle than any of you do because I'm the one with the experience. I've had to change my flooring, furniture and fix my habits of leaving anything just lying around so that I could live with this fox. My home is Cairo's home and he is free to roam it at all times. I own my own home and I've dealt with and deal with all the messes these foxes can make... So on that note, I don't recommend anyone ever consider owning a fox unless you own your own place and are a responsible individual because they aren't like dogs, and they aren't like cats... they're like foxes... and foxes are hard to train, and curious about everything.

Arnold the Fennec Fox Exploring his Environment
Arnold is only about two and a half months old here. He was not brand new to the house, but being as inquisitive as he is, he was still finding things to explore and be curious about. And, of course, he enjoys a nice petting too!
I'd like to say, anyone interested in finding a fennec fox, should check out the groups on yahoo.com... There are several licensed breeders who are members. However, many of them will really question you, because too many people buy a fennec because they are so cute, and don't realize how much work they are... For me, it's worth it. For some, it is too much and they run into difficulty re-homing their pet.

Cat wants to play with the Fennec fox
The cat always make unwanted advances to the Fennec. And, he(cat) is always scolded by the fennec. It is a spectacle from which this is seen very often in my home recently.

A Tired Fennec Fox, Scout, making cute sounds
After a long day of running around like a maniac with Doggie, Scout finally chilled out and decided to lay next to his heat rock to take a nap. Sara came by to pet him before he took a nap and he started making the cutest sounds ever.

Exotic Pets - Fennec Fox
Exotic Pets - Fennec Fox - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats.
I am Beth Randall, and I am the director at Critter Camp Exotic Pet Sanctuary, and this is Zoey, and she is a Fennec fox. And Fennec foxes are native to the Sahara desert, they are the smallest fox in the world, and they have been bred here in the United States as pets since about the 1970s. They run about $1500, and are considered one of the more exotic pets that an average person might go buy. They are not necessarily legal everywhere, so people do need to check their city, county and state for the laws regarding exotic pets before they get one.
Fennec foxes are a shy animal. All foxes are shy, but Fennecs are especially shy; very skittish; they can be very bitey; not really predictable. It might take months and months of handling before a Fennec fox can be actually picked up without gloves. They do dig a lot, that is just one of their traits, they dig at everything. They do not really play with toys so much. A lot of people get them and think that they are going to play with them, like with cat toys and things, and they may or may not do that. Foxes are a solitary animal, and so they do not necessarily interact with you.
They are also not potty trainable. And so that is something people actually need to understand, that they may choose to go in a litter box, they may choose to go on a puppy pad, but the majority will not, they will go potty wherever they are, it is just a fox trait. They need to eat a diet high in protein, with taurine added, that is an amino acid that has to be added to protect their heart. They like fruits and vegetables, and it just depends on the individual fox. They live about 12 years. They should be spayed and neutered for temperament. And they do need to be free range, as well as having a cage to hide out in and to be in when someone is not supervising them.
Sometimes they can get along with cats and dogs and other pets, and sometimes they do not, they are all individuals. It is really important to visit someone who has a Fennec fox before you get one. That way, you know if you can deal with the smells and the actual care that they do need.

Our Fennec Fox room
We have two amazing Fennec foxes, Foxy and Sayleh. They have their own room built for them in the house. We take them out all the time. They roam the house just like a dog. They are extremely quick so we obvious make sure that no doors are opened. The room has day and night time heated lights. They are very playful but at times can get a little cranky. They definitely hate annoying people who tell me that this is wrong.

Early morning madness with Scout the Fennec Fox
Every morning when we wake up and go to let Scout out of his cage, he flips out in happiness to see us. Especially when he heard Doggie coming into the room, that's when he begins screaming the loudest.
Edit: A lot of people had an issue seeing him locked in this small cage in my early videos when we first brought him home. The good news is that he never lived in that cage. I used that cage when we first brought him home but shortly after we got him a large ferret cage that he occasionally stays in. If you watch some of my most recent videos you will see that scout mainly stays out of the cage, free-roams the house, and mostly stays up late playing with me. However sometimes he'll go into his cage to sleep and loves it just as much as the next fox loves their den. Small sleeping quarters for a fox is not an issue and it makes them feel more secure. If you think about the size of a fox den in the wild, it'll make more sense to you. If foxes built big luxurious dens it would make it very easy for a predator to come inside and eat them.
If you're looking to own a fennec fox as a pet, please do all the research possible before even looking for available breeders. Fennec Foxes are huge responsibilities and require special permits in most states in the US. Some states wont even allow you to own one as a pet at all so you'll need to check with the Fish and Game wildlife committee in your state for the proper laws in exotic pet ownership. I've seen Fennec Foxes range in the price of $1000-$5000 depending on season, breeder, and location. Owning a Fennec is like having a small dog with the agility of a cat. They are also highly skittish around strangers and shy in general. If you're expecting to get one to hold and cuddle all the time, I suggest getting a cat or a dog instead. Please respect the fact that they are still wild animals and learn enough about their needs and mannerisms before thinking of owning one.

This Video was shot in Saudi Arabia Desert nearly 500 km North to Riyadh the Capital city. The man was walking around with his kids during a family picnic in the desert, and was lucky to have his camera while they crossed with a hungry "Fennec Fox" puppy in the wild.
The puppy was acting himself when he felt hungry :)

Lliam the Fennec Fox
Llaim is a character of mine, from a personal project. I designed, modeled and textured him, and he is in the process of being rigged for an animation.
Lliam is a fennec fox plushie. He's about 8 inches tall, and is just a little over 6 years old. Lliam has the biggest ears and the smallest hands, which makes him doing most of his tasks and conveying most of his feelings with his ears more than his arms.

Video of our kit, Tucky. Filmed Dec 2006
Edit: Regarding the banter between animal rights extremists & pet owners, these are not wild caught foxes, they are 3rd generation captive bred. Although not domesticated they thrive and live longer lives in captivity. In the wild they have been hunted to near extinction. If you want to attack someone, go after those who kill them for their fur.

The Fennec Fox Room NUMBER 2
These crazy little critters just woke up. The girl Foxy was happy but the boy Sayleh was pissed off. Also Fu$k all you haters and hippies. If you losers only knew how well kept these babies are. In Africa they die all the time by hunting and other animals. These babies are well taken care of and will live a lot longer then Fennec Foxes in the wild.
