Using Wikipedia: Crash Course Navigating Digital Information #5
Let's talk about Wikipedia. Wikipedia is often maligned by teachers and twitter trolls alike as an unreliable source. And yes, it does sometimes have major errors and omissions, but Wikipedia is also the Internet's largest general reference work and as such an incredibly powerful tool. Today we'll discuss using Wikipedia for good - to help us get a birds-eye view of content, better evaluate information with lateral reading, and find trustworthy primary sources.

Wikipedia Donations Exposed. The Truth.
Lock In 7% With Government Bonds:

Wikipedia Plays Pokemon (Round 3, with new code)
I made a program that downloads a random Wikipedia article, makes it somewhat readable and then tries to play Pokemon.
It takes the first letter of each word and then presses buttons accordingly. I tried to make it somewhat balanced so 80% of the button presses are movement, 15% is "A" button, 4% is "B" and final 1% is start. These obviously vary from article to article but that is roughly the average.
Had to reset the run because I have no idea how far back the save file is and I think this bot could do better with different starter.
This is heavily inspired by Twitch Plays Pokemon back in the day and Pi Plays Pokemon and bunch of other streamers/content creators as well.
Let's see how this goes!

I’m sure you’ve all seen the Wikipedia pop-up asking for donations. At first glance, the request seems like a humble ask to keep the community-oriented website up and running. But, many would argue that this pop-up is not only extremely misleading but highly unethical. Even Wikipedia’s own ex-outreach officer says that he is ashamed of Wikipedia’s fundraising tactics. Why you ask? Well, the simple truth is that Wikipedia itself is not actually all that dependent on donations. In fact, according to Wikipedia’s own founder, Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia can be run for just $5,000 per month. He made that statement a while ago, but even accounting for inflation and more traffic, the cost to keep up Wikipedia is extremely minimal. As such, the vast majority of your donations actually end up going to efforts outside Wikipedia that you’re probably not even familiar with like grants and other Wiki products. This video explains the controversy surrounding Wikipedia donations and why their fundraising effort may not be as wholesome as think.

Simple English Wikipedia
The Simple English Wikipedia is an English edition of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, primarily written in Basic English and Special English. It was launched on November 17, 2003. It is one of five Wikipedias written in an Anglic language, the others being the English Wikipedia, the Pitkern-Norfuk Wikipedia, the Scots Wikipedia, and the Old English Wikipedia, though the last is largely unintelligible to speakers of the modern language. The site has the stated aim of providing an encyclopedia for "people with different needs, such as students, children, adults with learning difficulties and people who are trying to learn English". English Wikipedia
The English Wikipedia is the English-language edition of the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Founded on 15 January 2001 and reaching four million articles by July 2012, it was the first edition of Wikipedia and remains the largest, with almost three times as many articles as the next largest, the Dutch Wikipedia. As of June 2014, nearly 14.2% of articles in all Wikipedias belong to the English-language edition. This share has gradually declined from more than 50% in 2003, due to the growth of Wikipedias in other languages. There are 4,541,856 articles on the site (live count). In December 2012, the combined text of the English Wikipedia's articles totaled roughly 9.7 gigabytes.

The articles on the Simple English Wikipedia are usually shorter than their English Wikipedia counterparts, typically presenting only basic information: Tim Dowling of The Guardian newspaper explained that "the Simple English version tends to stick to commonly accepted facts". The interface is also more simply labeled; for instance, the "Random article" link on the English Wikipedia is replaced with a "Show Any Page" link; users are invited to "change" rather than "edit" pages; clicking on a red link shows a "not yet started" message rather than the usual "page does not exist". The project uses around 2,000 common English words, and is based on Basic English, an 850-word auxiliary international language created by Charles Kay Ogden in the 1920s.
