add video playlist Iraq 10 years on: the legacy of war Subscribe to the Guardian HERE: http://bitly.com/UvkFpD Ten years after the US-led invasion of Iraq, the consequences are legion: a country divided along sectarian lines, a new authoritarian leadership, a region destabilised, western armies licking their wounds and international diplomacy discredited like never before. And that's before counting the more immediate toll: tens of thousands of bodies, millions of displaced people, and hundreds of millions of dollars. The Guardian spoke to some of the key players from the Iraq war about the legacy of the conflict.

Iraq 10 years on: the legacy of war Subscribe to the Guardian HERE: http://bitly.com/UvkFpD Ten years after the US-led invasion of Iraq, the consequences are legion: a country divided along sectarian lines, a new authoritarian leadership, a region destabilised, western armies licking their wounds and international diplomacy discredited like never before. And that's before counting the more immediate toll: tens of thousands of bodies, millions of displaced people, and hundreds of millions of dollars. The Guardian spoke to some of the key players from the Iraq war about the legacy of the conflict.

Beijing Correspondent Malcolm Moore reports from China's National People's Congress where Xi Jinping has been formally elected the country's leader. To loud applause, Mr Xi, 59, stood up and bowed to the delegates before shaking hands with outgoing leader Hu Jintao and walking off stage in the Great Hall of the People. Only one of the delegates to the National People's Congress (NPC) declined to rubber-stamp Mr Xi's nomination, voting against him. There were three abstentions and 2,952 votes in favour. Mr Xi was elected by exactly the same margin to the chairmanship of the Central Military Commission, the body that controls the People's Liberation Army, completing the trinity of state, Communist Party and military leadership. "They needed at least one vote of dissent to show that it was a democratic process," commented Malcolm Moore, the Telegraph's Beijing Correspondent. He also reported that the result drew many comparisons on China's social media with the election of a new pope in Rome on Wednesday evening. "We were hoping for a puff of red smoke from the Great Hall today, to mimic the Vatican, but sadly not," he remarked. China's new premier, a political transition that occurs just once every decade, is 57-year-old Li Keqiang. Li worked as a labourer in a rural commune, before studying law at the prestigious Peking University and earning a doctorate in economics. Li joined China's Communist party at 21 - that's when he met and formed a close bond with recently retired president Hu Jintao. The new premier is seen as being tough on corruption, and party insiders say he was instrumental in getting disgraced party boss Bo Xilai expelled from the party after he was charged for corruption.

MURDOCH'S SCANDAL - 9pm, Thursday 14 February 2013 PBS America - Sky 166 / Virgin Media 243 / pbsamerica.co.uk Rupert Murdoch's media empire has been shaken to the core by recent stories that have emerged. Lowell Bergman tells the story of the battle over the future of News Corporation. The scandal has prompted criminal investigations on both sides of the Atlantic as well as opening the workings of the Murdoch family to the public gaze. Dozens of journalists and top executives from Murdoch's papers have been arrested and both Murdoch and his son James were summoned to appear before the Commons culture committee investigating the scandal. The fall-out has already seen the closure of the News of the World, the withdrawal of News Corporation's bid to take over British Sky Broadcasting and the resignation of James Murdoch as its chairman. The investigation continues, with former employees set to face criminal charges. Contributors include Guardian correspondent Nick Davies, the reporter who broke the phone-hacking story, campaigning MP Tom Watson, who keenly questioned Murdoch at his parliamentary hearing, and Mark Lewis, the lawyer representing more than 80 alleged phone-hacking victims. As the government considers the recommendations of the Leveson Inquiry, this film offers a timely reminder of the events that caused it to be set up in the first place.
