Animal Shelter Pet of the Week: Meet Bumble

This is Bumble, an American Bulldog mix with the most darling wrinkly forehead and a soft white coat. Bumble was recently brought to the Seattle Animal Shelter, and has had some hard knocks in his short life so far–but despite his past, he remains a true sweetheart and a gentle soul.

Bumble is still a young  boy, so he loves to play and go on long walks. But his all time favorite thing to do is to cuddle, and he would happily let you pet him all day.

Bumble is deaf, so his training consists of hand signals. He has already begun learning several hand signals in his training and will start obedience classes with his foster family soon. He is very smart and eager to learn and to please. He is house trained and crate trained. He sleeps in his dog bed all through the night without a peep (except for some snoring) . Overall, Bumble is an easy going boy who just wants companionship and to be loved.

Helpline Christmas tree lot moves to the north side of Safeway

A sign of the holiday season since 1995, once again the Queen Anne Helpline will be setting up shop to sell Christmas trees, wreaths and swags. And if you happen to be feeling smoochy this holiday season, mistletoe will also available for sale.

As in years past, the upper Queen Anne Safeway has generously donated space in the parking lot to house this effort. This year however, the tree lot will be moving to the north side of the building (the smaller lot between 1st Avenue North and Boston Street). This is so in order to ensure enough parking at the store during the busy holiday season. (Safeway has seen a surge in business with the demolition of the upper Metropolitan Market.)

The tree lot will be up and running by the morning of Saturday, November 24th and will sell trees throughout December. They shut the gates for the season when the last tree is sold (typically a few days before the Fat Man comes to town). All proceeds from the sales, split between the Helpline and Boy Scout Troop 72, go directly back into the community. The Boy Scouts provide the muscle in the tree lot, and will either ‘wrassle the tree onto your car roof, or will help you walk it to your door if you happen to live close by.

And if the good that the Helpline does isn’t enough of an enticement for you to make your purchase at their tree lot, then remember this: free popcorn and cider for all (even the looky-loos).

Tree lot hours are:

Mon-Thurs, 2:00 – 8:00 PM.

Friday, 2:00-9:00 PM

Saturday, 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM

Sunday, 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Animal Shelter Pet of the Week: Meet Bam

This is Bam, a sweet, tail wagging, mellow American Bulldog mix who is about three years old. With his floppy ears and big smile, he will make great company on walks, hikes, or even just kicking it on the couch.

He is currently living in a Seattle Animal Shelter foster home, where his family has called him a “pretty chill guy”.   He is also quite a gentleman, even politely offering up his ball for you, just in case you’re in the mood for a game of catch.

Bam would do best in a relatively active household with older kids—but no cats, please!  To see more pictures of Bam, or to learn about adopting him, please click here.

Tickets on sale now for the Queen Anne Helpline’s Annual Gala

Now here’s an opportunity to bust out your dancing shoes.

In celebration of its 30th year of helping people, the Queen Anne Helpline is hosting its Annual Gala on October 27th at the Fisher Pavilion at the Seattle Center. Enjoy gypsy jazz band Pearl Django with special guest vocalist Greta Matassa, while sipping libations at the no host bar. Hearty hors d’ouevres will be provided by local restaurants  — all  this to support the Helpline’s work on our neighborhood.

In addition to a raise the paddle, the Gala will also feature a Golden Raffle for yummy prizes. What’s a “Golden Raffle,” you ask?   Here’s how it works – 11 raffle tickets are chosen in total. The first winner gets his or her choice among 11 prizes, the second winner gets to choose among the remaining 10, and so on.  And the prizes…well, they are stellar: a week at an 18th century French manor house in the Dordogne Valley, sailing adventures for four in Puget Sound, a $400 gift certificate to Canlis and collections of 50+ bottles of wine selected by the wonderful folks at McCarthy & Schiering are but a few of the items up for grabs.

But you have to be in it to win it. Tickets to the Gala can be purchased through Brown Paper Tickets or by calling (206) 282.1540.

Just so you know…the Queen Anne Helpline has been a safety net for neighbors in the 98109 and 98119 zip codes since 1982. It provides short-term financial assistance with basic necessities such as rent, utilities, education, back-to-school supplies, clothing and medicine. Individual and corporate contributions help them support the financial stability, education, and health of our neighbors by mobilizing the caring support and generosity of the Queen Anne community. And they do it all without receiving any federal, state or city dollars.

Animal Shelter Pet of the Week: Meet Diana

Diana is a pretty 10 month old pit bull mix who is a non-stop tail wagger. She is still full of puppy energy and loves to hike, jog, and play fetch, so her new owner should be active just like her.  She is currently living in a Seattle Animal Shelter foster home, where she is demonstrating what a quick learner she is—learning how to ‘sit’ was a snap!

After she lets you know how thrilled she is that you are home, she would like nothing more than to curl up with you on a soft couch.  She is great with older kids who are familiar with bigger dogs, but does need a cat-free home.   Diana is good with some other dogs – be sure to watch the video on her Petfinder page and see how nicely she plays with her buddy Zulu.
