US Boosting Defence After North Korea Threats

The regime of Kim Jong-Un has threatened to hit the US mainland with a pre-emptive nuclear attack. The US is beefing up its missile defence systems with new interceptors after recent threats of a nuclear attack by North Korea. Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has announced the addition of 14 interceptors in Alaska to the US-based missile defence system, a nearly 50% increase in defence capability. The new interceptors, added to the 30 already installed in California and Alaska, will improve the US' ability to shoot down missiles in flight before they reach the US. Mr Hagel said the US is also working with Japan to deploy new radar systems from Japan that could better track and provide warning of any missile launched by the Communist regime. And, he said, the Pentagon is studying the feasibility of alternative missile defence system sites in other parts of the US. US officials do not believe North Korea is capable of carrying out a nuclear attack on the US, but the recent threat has added to tensions between the two countries. The defence system has existed since 2004, when the George W Bush administration built it in response to threats from North Korea. In the past year under the regime of leader Kim Jong-Un North Korea has conducted three nuclear tests and successfully launched a satellite into orbit - the same technology needed to launch a long-range missile. Mr Hagel told reporters on Friday the defence decision was intended to help the US "stay ahead of the threat" posed by North Korea's missile technology advances. North Korea's ire has also been directed at neighbour South Korea, recently threatening to reduce the country's capitol of Seoul to "a sea of fire". Impulsar EE.UU. Beijing Correspondent Malcolm Moore reports from China's National People's Congress where Xi Jinping has been formally elected the country's leader. To loud applause, Mr Xi, 59, stood up and bowed to the delegates before shaking hands with outgoing leader Hu Jintao and walking off stage in the Great Hall of the People. Only one of the delegates to the National People's Congress (NPC) declined to rubber-stamp Mr Xi's nomination, voting against him. There were three abstentions and 2,952 votes in favour. Mr Xi was elected by exactly the same margin to the chairmanship of the Central Military Commission, the body that controls the People's Liberation Army, completing the trinity of state, Communist Party and military leadership. "They needed at least one vote of dissent to show that it was a democratic process," commented Malcolm Moore, the Telegraph's Beijing Correspondent. He also reported that the result drew many comparisons on China's social media with the election of a new pope in Rome on Wednesday evening. "We were hoping for a puff of red smoke from the Great Hall today, to mimic the Vatican, but sadly not," he remarked. Syrian rebel fighters should not be subject to the same restrictions as Bashar al Assad's regime, David Cameron says.European Union foreign ministers will reconsider the arms embargo against Syria to unblock military aid to rebel fighters, David Cameron says. Speaking in Brussels on the second anniversary of the start of the uprising against Bashar al Assad, the Prime Minister said he and French President Francois Hollande had made the case that Syria's opposition should not be treated the same way as the regime. "We have to be frank, what the international community has done so far ... hasn't overall worked in terms of stopping this conflict and achieving transition in Syria," he said. "I am not saying Britain would like to supply arms to rebels groups. What we want to do is work with them to ensure they are doing the right thing." The existing arms embargo, which allows only for "non-lethal" military support, was not due to be reviewed until the end of May. Last week, Foreign Secretary William Hague extended Britain's support to the rebels to include armoured vehicles and body armour. Syria was not originally on the agenda at the summit called to discuss the economic crisis. But Mr Cameron and Mr Hollande got together on arrival in Brussels on Thursday and agreed their countries were ready to go it alone if necessary to help redress the balance of power in Syria. The idea is controversial, with some EU leaders concerned that the move could escalate the Syrian crisis by putting weapons in the hands of the wrong rebel groups. However, Mr Cameron rejected that argument saying it was more important to "shape the opposition". And he hinted that Britain and France could act without the rest of the EU if necessary, saying: "If we want to take individual action we are free to do so." Mr Hollande said he had been assured by the Syrian opposition that any weapons sent to them would end up in the right hands. Security was stepped up in the Syrian capital for the anniversary after some opposition fighters called for attacks on regime targets to mark the day. A Damascus-based activist who identified himself as Abu Qais told the Associated Press that troops increased patrols and security searches in Damascus. سوريا الاتحاد الأوروبي الحظر التفكير في الذكرى الأسلحة Suriye Yıldönümü AB durup düşünüyor Arms Ambargo Suriya Yubiley AB Rethinks silah embarqosu Aniversario de Siria UE replantea Embargo de armas Aniversário Síria UE repensa embargo de armas Syrien Anniversary EU beurteilt die Waffenembargos Anniversaire Syrie UE repense Embargo sur les armes

Strong Signs Higgs Boson Has Been Found - CERN.

Physicists who last summer triumphantly announced the discovery of a new particle but held back from saying what it was, declared on Thursday. There was now little doubt it was the long-sought Higgs boson. Latest analysis of data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator, where the boson was spotted as a bump on a graph early in 2012, "strongly indicates" it is the Higgs, said CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research. The particle and the field, named for British physicist Peter Higgs who predicted their existence 50 years ago, are also the last major missing elements in what scientists call the Standard Model of how the cosmos works at the very basic level. But the CERN statement stopped short of claiming a discovery - which would clear the way to Nobel prizes for scientists linked to the project - and floated the idea that this might be an exotic "super-Higgs" offering a key to new worlds of physics. Although some CERN physicists privately expressed irritation at the continuing refusal to - as one said - "call a Higgs a Higgs", others argued that this could only come when the evidence was all totally irrefutable. If it is not what one CERN-watching blogger has dubbed a "common or garden Higgs" but something more complex, vistas into worlds of super-symmetry, string theory, multiple dimensions and even parallel universes could begin to unfold. In recent months, rumours have flown that the particle might be some sort of super-Higgs - "the link between our world and most of the matter in the universe" as predicted by U.S. physicist Sean Carroll in a new book. But David Charlton, who speaks for the ATLAS team, said the latest analysis, presented on Thursday to a conference in the Italian Alps, pointed to the particle fitting the Standard Model.
