Here is the story behind 1997, and why I chose this world series to remake. Enjoy.
It was 1997, a time when there was 28 teams in Major League baseball, and the wildcard was still a new concept. Ken Griffey Jr. won the AL MVP while on the Mariners, and Larry Walker won the NL MVP on the Rockies. Roger Clemens won the pitching triple crown, and Cy Young award for the Blue Jays, while young Pedro Martinez won the Cy Young as a member of the Expos. Nomar Garciaparra and Scott Rolen won their leagues rookie of the years (man I feel old), and Tony Gwynn and Frank Thomas lead their leagues in batting average, Gwynn hitting .372. It didnt help much, as the Padres finished last in the NL West, and the White Sox at 80-81, good enough for second place in the AL Central. The Expos and Blue Jays won 78 games and 76 games respectively, and the Rockies at 83 wins never came close to the playoffs. The Mariners however, won their division, and that is where this story starts.
In 1993, the Florida Marlins and Colorado Rockies came into existence, as the 27th and 28th MLB teams. After 4 mediocre seasons, with Jim Leyland at the helm, the Marlins won 92 games (their first above .500 season), which was good enough for the NL Wild card. The Atlanta Braves, one of the best teams, if not the best in baseball posted a league best 101-61 record, claiming the NL East title. The Houston Astros took the NL Central at 84-78, and the San Francisco Giants claimed the west at 90-72. In the AL, the Baltimore Orioles claimed the AL East with a 98-64 record. 2 games behind them, the Yankees took the AL Wildcard at 96-66. The Cleveland Indians and their high powered offense took the central at 86-75, and the Seattle Mariners took the west at 90-72 behind MVP Ken Griffey Jr. The Indians beat the Yankees in 5, then defeated the Orioles in 6 to make it to the world series. In the NL, the Marlins swept Barry Bonds and the Giants and then beat the Atlanta Braves in 6 games. This left a matchup between the Indians and the Marlins for the 1997 World Series.
The Indians were an offensive powerhouse, behind sluggers Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Matt Williams and David Justice. The Marlins had young talent on offense, like Moises Alou and Gary Sheffield, but the strength was in their pitching. Kevin Brown, Al Leiter, and rookie Livan Hernandez powered through the season, making them a top 5 pitching team. This matchup was one of the best world series in my lifetime, a battle between power pitching and power hitting, so I hope you guys enjoy this awesome series idea!!!

Kevin Brown, Al Leiter, and rookie Livan Hernandez powered through the season, making them a top 5 pitching team. This matchup was one of the best world series in my lifetime, a battle between power pitching and power hitting, so I hope you guys enjoy this awesome series idea!!!

Derrek Leon Lee (born September 6, 1975), or "D-Lee", is a former Major League Baseball first baseman.
Lee was a World Series Champion with Florida in 2003, and he won theNational League batting title in 2005. He was a two-time All-Star selection, and won the Gold Glove Award three times.
Lee was born on September 6, 1975. Leon Lee is his father and Leron Lee is his uncle. Each of them played professional baseball in Japan. During his elementary years Lee lived in Japan, and during his high school years he often lived there during his summer breaks. Lee was born in Sacramento, California. Lee played Little League Baseball at Whitney Little League and graduated from El Camino High School in 1993.
Lee was drafted in the first round (14th overall) of the 1993 Major League Baseball Draft by the San Diego Padres, and made his major league debut on April 28, 1997.
Lee was a member of the 2003 World Series Marlins championship team. Lee won his first Gold Glove during the 2003 championship season and his spectacular grab and unassisted putout on a hard hit Hideki Matsui one-hop line drive snuffed out a Yankees rally and ended Game 5 of the World Series with a Marlins victory. The Marlins went on the win the World Series in Game 6.
He hit .278 with 32 home runs and 98 RBIs in his first year with the Cubs. In 2005, Lee had a career first half of the season, with a MLB-leading .376 batting average, 72 RBIs, and a tie for the major league lead in home runs with 27.
On April 10, 2006, Lee signed a five-year, $65 million extension with the Chicago Cubs.

Gregory Lamont Vaughn (born July 3, 1965) is a former Major League Baseball left fielder who played for the Milwaukee Brewers (1998 season, when he hit 50 to finish 4th in the major leagues behind Ken Griffey, Jr., Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGwire, who set the home run record that season. In 1999, he became the only player in major league history to be traded after a 50-homer season when the Padres traded him to the Cincinnati Reds. On the field, he hit 45 homers and became the second player in major league history to hit 40 or more homers in consecutive seasons with two different teams (one year after Andrés Galarraga became the first).
Throughout his career, Vaughn batted .242 with 355 home runs, 1072 RBI, 1017 runs, 1475 hits, 284 doubles, 23 triples and 121 stolen bases in 1731 games.

Daniel J. "D. J." Carrasco (born April 12, 1977 in Safford, Arizona) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Chicago White Sox.
Carrasco was drafted in the 26th round of the 1997 amateur draft by the Baltimore Orioles, but did not pitch a minor league game for them. He played for the Cleveland Indians' farm system in 1998 and for the Pittsburgh Pirates' farm system from 1999-2002. Carrasco spent all of 2003 in the majors for the Kansas City Royals and was up and down with the team from 2004-2005. He pitched three games in Japan for the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in 2006. Carrasco then pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks' Triple-A affiliate, the Tucson Sidewinders, in 2007. On January 11, 2008, Carrasco signed a minor league contract that included an invite to spring training with the Chicago White Sox.
On July 9, 2008, Carrasco was recalled by the Chicago White Sox to replace injured closer Bobby Jenks. Carrasco posted a 2.38 ERA in 7 appearances with Triple-A Charlotte before being recalled. He will likely be given a chance to contend for a spot in the starting rotation for the remainder of the 2008 season, due to the injury to Jose Contreras.

Backyard Baseball Season Walkthrough (Game 1, vs. Socks)

You'd better appreciate what I do for you guys...
This is something I honestly, truly thought I would never make. There's a lot of reasons I didn't, but it all ties back to one thing -- the seasons in Backyard Sports games are BORING BEYOND ALL BELIEF. Unfortunately, the original Baseball is the worst about this; all fourteen games of the regular seasons are played on the exact same field, and unlike later games, the remaining unpicked kids are not distributed among the other teams, leaving you with a bunch of nearly identical lineups as opposing teams. Essentially, you play the same game fourteen times until you get to the playoffs. I never beat this game when I was little, and I can't say I'm surprised by that in the slightest; I was a patient kid, but I was not this patient.
So why am I doing this? Multiple reasons, but the biggest is because I clearly have nothing else to do. I've exhausted a ton of walkthrough ideas, and so far this is the only part of the Humongous games I really haven't covered yet. Videos of the Backyard Sports have increased quite a bit since I made mine (when I made my original gameplay video they were extremely few and far between), but there's still a lack of season playthroughs. Again, I can't say I'm surprised. I also don't know of any uncommentated season playthroughs up right now...which I can actually say I AM surprised about. Who the heck has enough things to say in a game as repetitive as this?
Regardless, I'm going to be recording every game of the season and uploading it. I will commend you if you somehow sit through every single video. Now, I am going to say that unlike most playthroughs where I try to keep skipping to a minimum, I WILL be using the escape and period keys in this game. I also only showed Instant Replay a few times before turning it off -- it's a pointless feature and it only makes things take longer. Plus, this is a recording; I think if you want replays you can dang well go back yourself. I think in this video the only time I skip things is when Vinnie does his "sweet as candy" dialog, an overly long joke that gets annoying quick with repitition. Also, don't be surprised in the slightest if you see signs of me not caring or intentionally getting out -- the fifth inning was a particularly shining example, where I bunted with Keisha and swang when the pitch was blatantly a ball a few times. I will try not to turn off the announcing; yes, it gets annoying after a while, but if you turn it off you miss out on some of the unique dialog you can only hear in seasons (such Sunny making remarks on you clinching the division or winning the playoffs). Also, Vinnie tells some really funny stories during one scoreboard transition per game, and they're very rarely heard, so that's something else not to miss.
This video is of me drafting the players, setting up the strategy, and playing the first game. In case you're wondering, yes, I intentionally picked Pablo a lot later in the lineup just to drive people bonkers. Can't wait for some of the comments I get regarding that...hee hee hee...although just be thankful I didn't pick him last like I originally intended to. I also decided, against my nature, to put the better batters in front this time so I wouldn't get a bunch of "Y U MAK PABLO HIT FORTH N00B!!!!!!".
Hope you enjoy watching these...a lot more than I do making them.

Larry Greene is a physical specimen. The 6ft 1in 230lb lefty hitter has all of the tools to make it to the big show. We have clocked Greene at 6.51 with a screw in his foot. Greene also threw 91 MPH from RF in a workout. Larry Greene has as much physical power as any kid in America. He can hit balls out of site. We saw a three homer performance in the State playoffs last season. Greene's weakness may be in the mental game. He has to step up this side of his game to get the big money draft day he is hoping for. The physical tools are in place we hope Greene can improve the other stuff and he could be a 1st Rounder. Several mock drafts have Greene going pick 33 to 36

Oklahoma State introduces the new head coach of the Cowboy Baseball program, Josh Holliday.
Oklahoma State has named Josh Holliday the 15th head baseball coach in program history, it was announced today by OSU Vice President for Athletic Programs Mike Holder.
The 35-year old Oklahoma State alumnus and native of Stillwater has served the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt and follows Frank Anderson, who spent the last nine years as the Cowboys' head coach.
"I'm very honored and very humbled to be given an opportunity to come back to OSU and return to a place that has meant so much to me and my family over the past 30-plus years," Holliday said. "I'm excited about the unique opportunity to build a future with a program that celebrates and recognizes its proud history, embraces the current players and works towards a future that everyone will be proud of and unite behind.
"Our goal is going to be to approach every day with a tremendous amount of pride and discipline in becoming the best we can be in every facet of our lives, as coaches, as players and anyone involved with our kids. We're going to work to win each day, and over the course of time we're going to work to win a national championship. We're going to do that together and do it in a way that enhances our players' lives academically, socially and athletically. I hope that plan of attack and approach is going to train our players with an approach that will stay with them the rest of their lives."
Holliday becomes the first former OSU player to serve as the program's head coach. A four-year letterwinner for the Cowboys from 1996-99, Holliday was a starter on Cowboy teams that made four NCAA Tournament appearances and reached the College World Series in 1996 and 1999.
For the last 11 years, Holliday has served as an assistant coach at some of the nation's top baseball programs. He started his coaching career at OSU before serving on the staffs at North Carolina State, Georgia Tech, Arizona State and Vanderbilt. He coached on seven NCAA Tournament teams and three of those advanced to the College World Series (Georgia Tech in 2006, Arizona State in 2009 and Vanderbilt in 2011).
"We are obviously very excited to welcome Josh back home to Stillwater and Oklahoma State," Holder said. "He has seen Cowboy Baseball from just about every angle possible. He grew up at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium and was a terrific student-athlete at Stillwater High School. At OSU, who was an all-conference player and an Academic All-American and is a former staff member. He will bring the enthusiasm, energy, and a competitive fire that comes with being 35 years of age.
"He has built a strong national reputation over the years, and I expect him to be on the job as soon as the press conference is completed."
A four-year letterwinner who played in 256 games, which ranks second all time at OSU, Holliday compiled a career .311 batting average to go along with 53 home runs, 62 doubles and 237 RBIs. He was inducted into the OSU Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.
Holliday's name is prominent throughout the OSU record book. He is OSU's all-time leader in base on balls with 225 and also ranks in the top five on the Cowboys' career lists in games, at bats, runs, hits, doubles, total bases, RBIs and hit by pitches. He also ranks seventh all-time in homers.
Holliday was a three-time All-Big 12 performer, earning first-team honors in 1998 (at catcher) and 1999 (at third base). He was a second-team selection as a utility player in 1997 and was named the Big Eight Conference Freshman of the Year and a Freshman All-American in 1996.
Also a standout in the classroom at OSU, Holliday was a first-team academic all-conference honoree in each of his four seasons, earning that distinction in both the Big Eight (1996) and Big 12 (1997-99) Conferences. He was named an Academic All-American and the OSU Male Student-Athlete of the Year in 1999.
Holliday was selected in the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft by Toronto in the ninth round and spent two years in the Blue Jays organization. Following his professional baseball career, Holliday returned to Stillwater and joined the OSU coaching staff, where he served as an assistant for three seasons. He was a student assistant in 2001 before joining the full-time staff the following year.

All cards/scans are mine
Music is not mine and I'm not claiming credit.
I wanted to do this when he retired but it took forever to put it all together, then the music I wanted to use was blocked the first two times I tried to upload it, making me give up on it for a while but here it is, a tribute to the best player of his era.
.............................................
June 2nd 2010, The Seattle Mariners press release read:
SEATTLE, Wash. -- After 22 seasons, 630 home runs and a highlight reel of catches, Seattle sports icon Ken Griffey Jr. has announced his retirement from professional baseball in a statement today.
He made his Major League debut with the Mariners as a 19-year-old teenager in 1989, and ends his career as one of the most decorated power hitters in baseball history.
Griffey ranks among baseball's all-time leaders in home runs (5th/630), multi-homer games (T7th/55), extra base hits (T6th/1,192), total bases (12th/5,271), runs scored (31st/1,662), doubles (36th/524), intentional walks (4th/246) and hits (46th/2,781). On the all-time home run list, he trails only Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755), Babe Ruth (714) and Willie Mays (660), and ranks 3rd among left-handed hitters.
Griffey, 40, spent the first 11 years of his Major League career (1989-1999) in Seattle, after being the first overall pick in the June 1987 Draft. He played the next eight and half seasons with the Cincinnati Reds before spending the second half of the 2008 season with the Chicago White Sox. He returned to the Mariners in 2009, contributing to baseball's most-improved team.
He ranks near the top of every offensive category in the Mariners record book, including home runs (1st/417), slugging percentage (2nd/.553), RBI (2nd/1,216), hits (3rd/1,843), doubles (2nd/341), total bases (2nd/3,495), runs (2nd/1,113), games (2nd/1,685) and at-bats (2nd/6,317).
Griffey has been a 10-time American League All-Star (1990-99), winning the All-Star Game MVP in 1992 and three Home Run Derby's (1994, 1998, 1999). He was voted the American League Most Valuable Player in 1997 and selected to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team in 1999. He was also a three-time National League All-Star (2000, 2004, 2007).
Ken also won 10 Gold Glove Awards (1990-99) and seven Silver Slugger Awards (1991, 1993-94, 1996-99).
......................................
And poof he was gone. No press conferences, no follow up interviews, no tweeter announcements or a one hour event, just a press release and a statement from the GM. Really you'd expect no less. Only 5 players have been elected to the Hall of Fame with 98% of the vote or higher, in five years Griffey will no doubt become number 6.

Hero is a word we often hear in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. "42" tells the story of two men -- the great Jackie Robinson and legendary Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey -- whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball.
In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team, breaking Major League Baseball's infamous colour line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey's hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking -- ultimately winning over fan and his teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow.
In 1997, Major League Baseball retired the number 42 for all teams, making it the first number in sports to be universally retired. The only exception is April 15th -- Jackie Robinson Day -- commemorating the date of his first game as a Brooklyn Dodger. On that day alone, players from every team proudly wear Number 42 to honour the man who altered the course of history.
