"Ten Sessions" is the thirteenth episode of the third season of How I Met Your Mother, and the 57th episode overall of the series. It originally aired on March 24, 2008 on CBS. The episode was written by series co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, and directed by Pamela Fryman. In the episode, Ted is repeatedly rejected by his dermatologist Stella for a date, so Stella's receptionist, Abby, becomes interested in him.

In March 2008, it was announced that American recording artist Britney Spears would make a guest appearance on the show as Abby. Alongside Spears, "Ten Sessions" featured guest appearances from Sarah Chalke and Marshall Manesh, respectively. Television critics reacted positively to the episode, who praised the storyline and Spears' performance. According to the Nielsen ratings, "Ten Sessions" was watched by 10.62 million viewers, which was the show's highest rating for the third season of the series.

Plot[link]

Ted (Josh Radnor) is at the clinic to remove his tattoo, where he is attracted to his doctor, Stella (Sarah Chalke). They agree to go to a movie, but Ted does not realize Stella had brought her friends along with her, and it was not a date. At the next session, Ted suggests waiting till his ten sessions are over before asking her out, but Stella tells him she will still say no. Ted still feels that over ten weeks, she will start to like him, so decides to keep trying. Even though the first five sessions go well, Stella confirms her answer is still no. Ted decides that being nice to the receptionist, Abby (Britney Spears), would be a good way to let Stella see his good side, but instead, Abby starts to show interest in him. Upset that this didn't work, Ted tries using a self help book he saw in Stella's clinic. When he tries talking to her about this, she reveals it isn't her book, and she detests it, while Abby confirms that Ted was reading the book in the reception.

Robin (Cobie Smulders) suggests Ted give up on Stella and instead focus on Abby. Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) agrees, as he made an appointment with Stella to check what she was like, and discovered she had a condition where she is only attracted to men with mustaches. Although Ted does not believe him, he still tries to grow a mustache, which Stella laughs at (a year earlier, Barney had made a ten-dollar bet with Ted that he could get him to grow a mustache). Upset, Ted says he gives up, but Lily (Alyson Hannigan) tells him to try again, as Stella is interested in him, though she says she has not been to see her. It is then revealed that Marshall (Jason Segel) had gone to see Stella to talk up Ted, and found out Stella had a crush on him. Happy that Stella is interested in him, Ted asks her out after his last session, but she says she does not have a time for dating because she has a daughter.

After a while, Ted realizes she didn't actually say the word 'no', just that she didn't have time, and so decides to take her out on a "two minute date" - to dinner at a table at the café next door to her practice and a "movie" in clips at the electronics store two doors down, with help from Ranjit (Marshall Manesh). The date goes well, and Stella promises to call if she ever has time. Finally, Abby sees Ted outside the clinic holding flowers he tried to give to Stella, and chases him down the street. She is then seen at the reception telling Barney about how he toyed with her emotions, after which they go out to have sex.

"Ten Sessions" was written by series co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, and directed by Pamela Fryman. In early March 2008, it was confirmed that singer Britney Spears would guest star on the show.^[1][2] Neil Patrick Harris was "shocked" that Spears was willing to "come and do some acting", noting that she had not acted in a while.^[3] Spears's last acting role was on Will & Grace in 2006.^[4] Harris told Entertainment Tonight that the paparazzi would not be a problem, since the show is shot on the Fox secure lot.^[3] Before Sarah Chalke was given the role as Stella, Alicia Silverstone was originally set to guest star,^[5] but dropped out when her representatives feared she would be "overshadowed" by Spears.^[6] Co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas "love" Silverstone and hope she will eventually guest star on the show.^[6]

Alyson Hannigan said that Spears "was so funny" and that she had "no idea she [Spears] had such great comic timing".^[7] According to Jason Segel, Spears improvised a few lines that were "really good" and set "everyone laughing".^[7] Spears was nominated for a People's Choice Award in the Favorite Scene-Stealing Guest Star category for her performance in the episode.^[8] "Ten Sessions" first aired on CBS in the United States on March 24, 2008. Spears's wardrobe in the episode was put up for an online auction to benefit the Natural Resources Defense Council.^[9] The auction began just after the episode aired and would be going on for a week.^[9] The yellow Nanette Lepore lace dress Spears wore in the episode was sold for US$1,525,^[10] and the embroidered rust dress was sold for US$1,925.^[11]

Critics commended Spears for her performance in the episode.

In its original broadcast in the United States, "Ten Sessions" was watched by 10.62 million viewers according to the Nielsen ratings.^[4][12] It attracted 1 million more viewers than the previous episode, and 2.4 million more than the show's average before the writer's strike.^[12] The episode achieved a 4.5/12 rating in the key 18–49 demographic among adults, and was the fourth highest-rated show of the evening; it subsequently achieved the show's highest rating ever in the 18–49 demographic.^[13]

The appearance of Britney Spears was critically acclaimed by most critics. Linda Stasi of the New York Post asserted that Spears looked "slim [...] trim and gorgeous" and that "her acting was nothing short of adorably believable".^[14] Stasi concluded that Spears' cameo was the highlight of "Ten Sessions".^[14] David Hinckley of New York Daily News echoed similar sentiments, avouching that she "proved [that] she can act every bit as well as she can sing".^[15] Michelle Zoromski of IGN argued however that while Spears' appearance was a "nice change of pace from her latest public appearances", it was nonetheless a "bit clunky and not as seamless as other guest roles have been on the show".^[16] Donna Bowman of The A.V. Club was also less enthusiastic about the singer's performance. Bowman opined: "The Big Britney Episode, as it will henceforth be known, wasn't really much to get all huffy over. You can say this for the [How I Met Your Mother] team: They tend to minimize the annoyance factor of their special guest stars. Britney was a sideshow, and she got her couple of laughs, but she didn't hog the screen time."^[17]

Similarly, "Ten Sessions" as a whole was well-received by television critics. Bowman gave the episode a 'B' grade, and was more critical of "Ten Sessions".^[17] She expressed: "the timing wasn't spot-on all the way through 'Ten Sessions'. The episode was slow starting, and as with many of the series' 'Ted is a master of romance' attempts, the two-minute date seemed as likely to be annoying-quirky as endearing-quirky, if you were the one being wooed. I wanted to like it more than I did. Maybe it almost works because Elliot on Scrubs would have really liked it, ditzy romantic that she is. But no — it's just an ounce heavy on the trying-too-hard scale."^[17] In contrast, Zoromski gave the episode an 8.9 out of ten, signifying a "great" rating. He thought that the episode was superior to the previous episode, adding that the show returned to full form.^[16]

10 Years is an American alternative metal band, formed in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1999.

[edit] Early Years, Into the Half Moon (1999–2001)

10 Years was initially formed in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1999 with singer Mike Underdown, drummer Brian Vodinh, bassist Lewis Cosby, and guitarists Ryan "Tater" Johnson (also of The American Plague) and Matt Wantland. In 2001, Cosby left and the band recruited Andy Parks on bass. They independently recorded Into the Half Moon the same year.

[edit] Killing All That Holds You, The Autumn Effect (2002–2006)

Lead vocalist Mike Underdown left the band to pursue a career in acting and start up a new band 'Courage, You Bastards' in Los Angeles, Ca. 10 Years soon recruited current vocalist Jesse Hasek from another local band. In 2002, Parks decided to leave the band and Cosby returned. The band then released their independent album Killing All That Holds You in 2004.

10 Years was then signed to Universal Records in 2005 and released their major label debut, The Autumn Effect on August 16, 2005 with the songs "Wasteland" and "Through the Iris" picking up regional radio play. Their first single, "Wasteland" spent over 12 months on the rock charts, finally reaching #1 at active rock radio in December 2005.

That same summer, the band toured with Disturbed and Ill Niño. In the fall of 2005, they toured with Breaking Benjamin and Smile Empty Soul, then followed up with the Masters of Horror tour with Mudvayne and Sevendust. They opened for Korn and Mudvayne on Korn's See You on the Other Side tour. They also toured with Korn and Deftones on the Family Values Tour, which started in late July 2006.

In mid February 2006, "Wasteland" reached #1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. "Wasteland" has been certified Gold by the RIAA.

In mid-2006, the band toured Australia in a lineup which included Hatebreed, Disturbed and Korn.

Their first music video, "Wasteland", addresses the social problem of human rights as well as addiction around the world. The video received a nomination for Best Direction and Best Art Direction at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, but did not win either.

On March 27, 2006, an EP was released on iTunes containing acoustic versions of "Wasteland" and other tracks from The Autumn Effect.

[edit] Division (2006–2008)

On November 19, 2006, 10 Years unveiled and confirmed the title Division for their second album.^[1] The band would begin recording Division in late June 2007 after spending the better part of a year writing.

Lewis told in an interview that the album is "so different from the first one [The Autumn Effect], but it's still 10 Years," and, "It just sounds like [the songs] would be from a totally different album, which was, you know, the goal."^[2] It was also revealed that the track titled "Focus" was co-written with Stone Temple Pilots and former Army of Anyone guitarist Dean DeLeo.^[1]

On May 21, 2007 a demo song titled "All Your Lies" from Division was released onto their MySpace along with a post stating the band had chosen producer Rick Parasher to produce the new album.^[3] On September 7, the band announced on their MySpace that the album was finished and would be released in 2008, following a tour with Dir En Grey, Sevendust, Operator, Thousand Foot Krutch and Chevelle.

On January 29, 2008, "Beautiful," the new single from Division, was released to iTunes and a snippet was also posted on the band's MySpace page. Division was released on May 13, 2008 after being pushed back due to finalization of the album's artwork.^[4]

10 Years was featured on the Revolution Stage of Linkin Park's Summer Projekt Revolution 2008 tour with Atreyu, Hawthorne Heights and Armor For Sleep.

They went on tour with Mudvayne until mid December 2008.

[edit] Feeding the Wolves (2009–2011)

10 Years announced that their upcoming third major label album would be entitled Feeding the Wolves. The album was produced by Grammy-nominated producer Howard Benson and mixed by Chris "Lord" Alge. The band has mentioned the album is of their heaviest material to date and "very similar to some of their early songs."

Throughout the first half of 2010, the band went back and forth between putting on live shows and working in the studio. Before the album was released, the band debuted new songs at live performances such as "Dead in the Water", "Now is the Time", and the new album's first single ""Shoot It Out" ". ^[5][6]

On June 12, 2010, ""Shoot It Out" " was featured on Sirius/XM Radio. The track was released to radio later that month,^[7] and was made available for download on iTunes July 6.^[8] Feeding the Wolves was released on August 31, 2010.

To promote the album's release, the band opened Shinedown's 2010 Carnival of Madness summer tour alongside Chevelle, Puddle of Mudd, and Sevendust.^[9] In the fall they joined Sevendust again on the Hard Drive Live tour with support from Since October and Anew Revolution.

In December, the band went on a mini-headline tour,^[10] where they played some older songs that they had not played in some time. February 2011, their new single "Fix Me" releases to radio while they headline a spring tour with Hollywood Undead.

On June 17 and 18 the band shot a music video for "Fix Me" in Columbus, Ohio with production company Thunder Down Country.^[11] The video was released via YouTube on August 9, 2011.^[12]

[edit] Minus The Machine Palehorse Records (2012-present)

On twitter the band has shown pictures of Brian Vodinh's home basement turned studio for future workings on their next album.

On April 2nd, 2012, the band announced on Facebook that their upcoming record, Minus The Machine, is to be released on July 30th on their own independent label, Palehorse Records, which the band stated is a part of Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group. They also announced a 4-week headlining tour to support the record, which begins on June 27th in New Orleans.

On May 11th, the band unveiled the cover art of the album and it was announced that the album's release has been pushed back to July 31st.^{[citation needed]} 10 Years will release their first single "Backlash" on radio and iTunes on June 21st.

Nicole Monique Wray (born May 2, 1981), also known as simply Nicole, is an American R&B and hip hop singer. Her 1998 debut single "Make It Hot" was certified gold.

Musical career[link]

Wray was born in Salinas, California on May 2, 1981,^[2] and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia. After being introduced to Missy Elliott, Wray was featured on Missy's platinum certified debut Supa Dupa Fly. When Elliott started her own label, The Goldmind, the then 17-year-old Wray was the first artist signed.^[3]

In 1998, her debut album Make It Hot was released. Heavily criticized for Elliott's heavy-handed involvement (she produced, wrote, and performed on much of the album)^[3] the first single, "Make It Hot", peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was certified gold.^[4] Her second single, "I Can't See", reached #36 on the Rhythmic Top 40 chart.^[5] Make It Hot peaked at number nineteen on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart (number 42 on The Billboard 200) and dropped off by the end of the year.^[6][7] The third single, "Eyes Better Not Wander", peaked at #71 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.^[8] Later that year, Wray would sing the hook to "All n My Grill" on Missy Elliott's platinum certified second album, Da Real World.

In July 2001, Nicole released "I'm Lookin'", the first single from her planned second album Elektric Blue.^[9] "I'm Lookin'" peaked at number 66 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart,^[10] but the album would never see the light of day.

After amicably parting with The Goldmind, Wray was sought after to feature vocals on various albums and soundtracks. She would go on to sign a new album deal and under the guidance of Damon Dash was featured on Cam'ron's gold certified 2004 release, Purple Haze. Later that year she released the single, "If I Was Your Girlfriend" from her scheduled Roc-A-Fella Records debut and sophomore studio set LoveChild.^[11] Though garnering some buzz, there ultimately was not enough push to release the album. After the temporary halt of Roc-A-Fella, LoveChild would suffer the same fate as its predecessor.

Wray moved through the Dame Dash Music Group, and also Channel 7 Records, with nothing to show but several guest vocal appearances.

Still maintaining her work relationship with Damon Dash, Wray joined The Black Keys rock/hip-hop collective Blakroc, and was a major vocal contributor to the group's self-titled November 2009 debut. Wray was then enlisted to add her background vocals on The Black Keys' seventh studio LP, Brothers, which was released in May 2010.

In 2010, she appeared on Kid Cudi's second album Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager on the song "The End", alongside Chip tha Ripper and GLC.

Simon Francis Dumont (born July 9, 1986) is a U.S. freestyle skier.

Dumont is notable as one of the best freestyle skiers in the world today.^{[citation needed]} He is known for his amplitude in half-pipe competitions, airing easily up to 20 feet out of the pipe, and doing superman double fronts. Dumont had a rough season in 2006-07 when he overshot a 100-foot jump in Park City, Utah, by some eighty feet, landing flat, rupturing his spleen and breaking his pelvis in three places, although he was back up and skiing two months later.^{[citation needed]} In 2009 he also won the X Games Big Air competition stomping a double front flip.^{[citation needed]}

He has participated in many freestyle events, mostly big air and half-pipe, and was part of Team America for the Jon Olsson Super Sessions (JOSS) along with American freestyle skiers Tom Wallisch, and Alex Schlopy. They have withdrawn from all future JOSS events because of an argument with Olsson about the release date of their video for JOSS.

In 2008, Jon Olsson and Dumont announced their involvement in a new open freeskiing event, the North American Open, at Breckenridge, Colorado. He also participates in Jon Olsson's Super Sessions competition where skiers from each country compete to try to make the best ski video (JOSS).

He was added to the US Freestyle ski team for the men's superpipe in the 2014 Winter Olympics. «»=== World quarterpipe record === On April 11, 2008, Simon Dumont set the current world quarter-pipe height record at Sunday River in Bethel, Maine. He aired 35.5 feet out of a 38-foot quarter-pipe, while performing a cork 900 tail grab.^[1] Previous attempts earlier in the week had resulted in Dumont falling 55 feet after hitting an over-vert section of the quarter-pipe. On other various attempts, Simon hit the snow with a flat landing, severely bruising his heel in the process. On April 22, 2008, Dumont was a guest on the Ellen DeGeneres Show where he discussed his record-setting performance.

Dumont Cup[link]

On April 11, 2009, Dumont hosted what was called the inaugural occasion of an annual contest for skiers ranging in age from about 8 to 18 at Sunday River.^[2] A specific course was set out for the contest with a combination of rails, boxes, and jumps. All entrants had a chance to qualify for the final few runs with pro skiers like Dumont, with a chance to win a spot on the podium. The first-place prize was $10,000,^{[citation needed]} won by American freestyle skier Tom Wallisch.

The second edition of the Dumont Cup was held on March 27, 2010, and was won by amateur freeskier Alex Schlopy. Schlopy out-skied 105 amateur athletes to gain entry into today's semi-finals and finals. During finals, Schlopy and nine others competed against such freeski professionals as Simon Dumont, Peter Olenick, Jossi Wells, and Henrik Harlaut. Schlopy was joined on the podium with Joss Christianson from Park City, Utah who took second place and the 2009 winner of the first-ever Dumont Cup, Tom Wallisch from Salt Lake City, Utah, who took third. Schlopy walked away with $12,000 in cash plus a one-week scholarship to Camp Woodward, an action sports camp and training facility located in Woodward, Penn.

On March 26, 2011 Dumont hosted the 3rd Dumont Cup, changing up the course from the previous years. Nick Goepper got first followed by Gus Kensworthy and Jacob Wester in second and third.

Auto racing[link]

On April 25th, 2009, Simon participated in the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup season opening race at Virginia International Raceway as a guest driver in the Red Bull-sponsored #10.^[3] Qualifying 25th, he moved up six positions to finish 19th in the 30-minute race. After his performance, Simon commented on a possible future in road racing, saying:

"The entire experience was way more than I ever imagined that it would be. The first time for me to get in a professional-level racecar was yesterday, and I'm definitely hooked," said Dumont. "My goal heading into this was to try to be competitive and not finish last, and I accomplished both goals. I'm going to do some work with my personal sponsors when I get home to see if I might be able to give the series a try full time next year."^[4]

Simon also expressed interest in racing full time after retiring from skiing.^[3]

Dumont was born in Bethel, Maine on July 9th, 1986, to Francis and Barbara Dumont. Simon has an older brother, a younger sister, and a multitude of cousins. Dumont weighs 150 lbs. and is 5'7" tall.^[5]

He attended Telstar Regional High School in Bethel, where he graduated in 2004. He was a participant in the school's golf program as well as a star soccer player. His home ski resort is Sunday River. Simon also was a child model, and at one point even auditioned for Home Alone three.

He first became recognized at the X Games when he was fifteen. At sixteen he competed in Honda Sessions at Vail Resort in Colorado. At seventeen, he won his first gold medals. At age eighteen, he was badly injured in a failed jump at Park City. The video of that crash -- he plummets eighty feet to the ground -- became an internet phenomenon. Dumont admits he's lucky to be alive. He fractured his pelvis and ruptured his spleen, but just six weeks later he returned to the slopes. Dumont, now 23, figures he's got 3 years of freestyle left in him. "Then I'd like to go backcountry and start landing in powder," he says, "it doesn't hurt so much."^{[citation needed]}

Jon Olsson born in Mora, Sweden is a professional freeskier and alpine ski racer. Jon started his career as a ski racer but at age 16 he switched his race skis for twin tips and quit ski racing. Eight years later after a 50 000 Sek bet with fellow skier Jens Byggmark, Olsson started ski racing again with the goal of the bets being to make it to the Olympics in 2014. He now competes in both Freestyle and Ski racing. Olsson is known for his invention of several new double flips, including a D-spin 720 into a flatspin 540 (DJ Flip), a switch double rodeo 1080 (Hexo Flip), a double flatspin 900 (Kangaroo Flip), and a switch cork 720 to flatspin 540 (The Tornado).

Olsson made his debut in the Alpine Skiing World Cup in Val d'Isère in December 2010, as part of a plan to make the Swedish alpine ski team at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Hans Olsson, a Swedish alpine skiier specialising in the speed events, is Jon Olsson’s brother. Olsson holds nine Winter X-Games medals (+ 2 podiums in Big Air). He has also won many other events including Big Air at Winter X-Games 08, The US Free Skiing Open in Vail, The Red Bull Big Air in Åre, Scandinavian Big Mountain Championships in Riksgränsen and the World Superpipe Championships in Whistler BC. Since Olsson’s return to alpine ski racing in 2008 he has won five FIS gs ski racers, with a 10 point fis result at Coronet Peak at the New Zealand National Championships which included a field of Olympians including Ben Griffin and Olivier Jenot.

Since 2005 Jon Olsson has hosted the Big Air event Jon Olsson Invitational, also known as JOI. In 2007 the event was voted best Big Air event by freesker magazine. Since 2007 he has also hosted Jon Olsson Super Sessions (JOSS), a freeskiing film contest that takes place in Åre, Sweden. The event consists of teams of skiers skiing for approximately two weeks with a film crew and creating a short ski film. Since 2008, Jon Olsson has hosted Jon Olsson Super Sessions, also known as "JOSS". JOSS is a freeskiing film contest that takes place in Åre, Sweden. The event consists of teams of skiers skiing for approximately two weeks with a film crew and creating a short ski film.^[3]

JOSS did not take place in 2011.
