Zhang Jue (died 184)^[1] was the leader of the Yellow Turban rebels during the late Han Dynasty period of Chinese history. He was said to be a follower of Taoism and a sorcerer. His name is sometimes read as Zhang Jiao, since the Chinese character of Zhang's given name can be read as either "Jiao" or "Jue". "Jue" is the traditional reading, while "Jiao" is the modern one.

Yellow Turban Rebellion[link]

Giving himself the title of "Great Teacher", Zhang Jue led the Yellow Turban Rebellion with his younger brothers Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang in a campaign called "The Way of Heaven" or "The Way of Peace". He and his brothers had their own power: Zhang Bao was the General of Land, and his brother General of the People; and Zhang Jue was the General of Heaven. The Yellow Turbans claimed to be Taoists, and rebelled against the Han in response to burdensome taxes, rampant corruption, and famine and flooding, which were seen as indications that the Han ruler had lost the mandate of heaven. They conquered much in the early years of the rebellion, but when the Han sent out a distress call, gaining the talent of people such as Liu Bei, Cao Cao and Sun Jian, the lack of ability that his generals held clearly showed itself. Although the Yellow Turbans still remained somewhat capable even in face of their more powerful foe, they were nonetheless torn apart upon the death of their leader, Zhang Jue, and were ultimately quelled.

It is said that Zhang Jue is a grandson of Zhang Daoling, founder of the Taoist sect Way of the Celestial Masters.

Zhang Jue is also featured in Luo Guanzhong's historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He is introduced in chapter 1 as follows:

At that time, there lived three brothers in Julu Commandery: Zhang Jue, Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang. Zhang Jiao was a failure in the county level examination. He had gone into the mountains to gather some medicinal herbs, when he came across an old man; the old man had a youthful countenance, and was carrying a fat-hen walking stick. The old man beckoned Jue into a cave, presented him with a book in three volumes which had come from the heavens, then said, "This book is called The Essential Art of Great Peace. Once you have mastered its contents, you will represent the heavens in spreading this knowledge, and thereby save all of mankind. If you start to have second thoughts, there will be terrible consequences for you." Jue enquired as to the old man's name. The old man said, "I am the old immortal spirit from the southern lands."^[2] With that, the old man vanished into thin air. Upon receiving this book, Jue practiced night and day. Eventually, he could summon the wind and rain, and came to be known as the Great Peace Taoist. (Wikisource translation)

He then goes on to found the rebellion known as the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Little time is devoted to Zhang Jue in the book, and his death is given a line in the second chapter: "Zhang Jue had died before his (Huangfu Song's) arrival."

Modern references[link]

Zhang Jue appears as a playable character in Koei's Dynasty Warriors and Warriors Orochi video games series. He is referred to as "Zhang Jiao" in the games.

He is also seen as one of the antagonists of the light gun shooting game SEGA Golden Gun in the final part of the Baijiafang stage. In this game, Zhang Jue transforms into a snake-tailed Genbu. His attacks include rolling himself in his shell to attack the players, using his snake tail to summon rocks or write "天" to summon lightning to attack players, the latter of which is shown during the second half of the boss fight. He is eventually defeated by the players and asks himself: "Am I going to sleep for another thousand years?"

Zhang Hui (simplified Chinese: 张会; traditional Chinese: 張會; pinyin: Zhāng Huì; born 8 March 1988 in Harbin, Heilongjiang) is a short track speed skater who competes for China. As part of the 3000m relay team, Zhang won the gold medal. She was accidentally injured the face by making contact with the blade of her teammate Wang Meng during the celebration.

Kelly Lin Hsi-Lei is a Taiwanese actress and model who has appeared mainly in Hong Kong films.

Biography[link]

Lin was born in Taiwan in 1975. She moved to Santa Barbara, California with her family at the age of 12. She graduated from the University of California, Irvine with a Degree in Economics. Not knowing what to do after college, Lin decided to pursue a career in show business in Taiwan.^[1]

Career[link]

Lin initially wanted to be a singer and has already recorded demo tapes for a record company, but she was given numerous offers for modeling on television and print ads. She was hailed by FHM as "Asia's Sexiest Woman" in 2002, and has graced the cover of numerous fashion magazines in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China. She has also appeared on copies of Marie Claire - French Edition (2005) and VOGUE Italia (2007).

Lin has been seen in various Hong Kong films and has worked with film directors such as Tsui Hark, Patrick Tam and, most frequently, Johnnie To. Lin has co-starred alongside Asian superstars, including Andy Lau, Stephen Chow and Ekin Cheng. With her success as an actress, she decided to drop her hopes of becoming a singer.

After a two-year hiatus from the film industry, Lin returned to acting with films such as Tokyo Trial and After This Our Exile for which she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 2006 Hong Kong Film Awards.

In 2006, she worked with award-winning French director, Olivier Assayas, and shared film credits with Italian-born Hollywood actress, Asia Argento, in the film, Boarding Gate, which aired at the Midnight Screening of the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. She also co-starred in the three-part-segment film, Triangle, which was also shown at the festival, and in Mad Detective, which was a runner-up and a "surprise film" at the 64th Venice International Film Festival 2007.

Her newest film, Sparrow, directed by Johnnie To, which took three years to make, was nominated for the "Golden Bear" at the Berlin International Film Festival 2008. Lin seem to have wisely chosen her movie projects, making herself be involve in art films, and giving her opportunities to travel around the world attending various film festivals. She gained the reputation of "Film Festival Queen" in Chinese entertainment.

In 2008, Lin is the first artist to be signed up with Stellar Entertainment Ltd., owned and managed by international superstar Michelle Yeoh, international film producer Terence Chang. The new company aims to launch Asian artists for international stardom. But Kelly has set her goals to making only 2 films a year, dedicating more time for family and friends, and to be involved in charitable projects.She is one of the celebrity prime movers of BVLGARI "Rewrite The Future-Save The Children" campaign, alongside global celebrities like Isabella Rosellini, Lena Headey, Mischa Barton, Willem Dafoe and many others.Being a dog lover herself, she is also a staunch supporter of adopting stray puppies/dogs in Taiwan.

Lin's latest film is Wai Ka Fai's "Written By", co-starring alongside award-winning actor Sean Lau once again. The film opened the 2009 New York Asian Film Festival last June, and released in Hong Kong on July 10, 2009. Taking a break from her numerous serious art films, Kelly stars alongside Mainland's comedy King Ge You, in a dark comedy film called "Gasp", which also stars Hollywood actor John Savage, released in Mainland cinemas in August 2009; Dirt Rich In Shanghai is set to be released also in October 2009. In this romantic comedy film, her screen partner will be versatile Mainland actor Sun Honglei, and the film is produced by John Woo, Michelle Yeoh and Terence Chang and under the direction of Taipei-based film maker Peter Lee.

After making two comedy movies in a row, Kelly Lin appeared in the Wuxia movie Reign of Assassins with Michelle Yeoh and acclaimed Korean actor Jung Woo Sung. Production began in 2009 with release in 2010.
