Oil Tankers - Modern Marvels - History Channel Documentary
The biggest moving objects ever built by man, oil tankers dominate the world's waterways, both in size and numbers. Upwards of 10,000 strong, the world tanker fleet's vast number results from the modern, insatiable thirst for oil. We'll dig into the history of oil transport--from Civil War days to the critical WWII years and invention of the supertanker in the 1950s. And we examine the financial impact of modifying these steel leviathans to prevent future catastrophic environmental disasters.
TVPG
An oil tanker, also known as a petroleum tanker, is a merchant ship designed for the bulk transport of oil. There are two basic types of oil tankers: the crude tanker and the product tanker. Crude tankers move large quantities of unrefined crude oil from its point of extraction to refineries. Product tankers, generally much smaller, are designed to move petrochemicals from refineries to points near consuming markets.
Oil tankers are often classified by their size as well as their occupation. The size classes range from inland or coastal tankers of a few thousand metric tons of deadweight (DWT) to the mammoth ultra large crude carriers (ULCCs) of 550,000 DWT. Tankers move approximately 2,000,000,000 metric tons (2.2×109 short tons) of oil every year. Second only to pipelines in terms of efficiency, the average cost of oil transport by tanker amounts to only two or three United States cents per 1 US gallon (3.8 L).
Some specialized types of oil tankers have evolved. One of these is the naval replenishment oiler, a tanker which can fuel a moving vessel. Combination ore-bulk-oil carriers and permanently moored floating storage units are two other variations on the standard oil tanker design. Oil tankers have been involved in a number of damaging and high-profile oil spills. As a result, they are subject to stringent design and operational regulations.

On-board poisoned tanker: Footage from stricken ship
A salvage crew has finally managed to board a cargo ship that has spilled hundreds of tons of oil since striking a reef off the coast of New Zealand. Video filmed on board by the Maritime New Zealand salvage operation team on Thursday showed the vessel had been fractured by a large crack. No decisions have been made on whether oil can be pumped from the ship before the vessel breaks up. Heavy seas had kept the team away from the 775-foot (236-metre) vessel for days, but a break in the weather allowed three crew members to be winched aboard the Liberian-flagged Rena, which ran aground October 5 on Astrolabe Reef, 14 miles (22 kilometres) from Tauranga Harbour on New Zealand's North Island. The vessel has been listing in the stormy ocean. A vertical crack in the ship runs around the entire vessel - meaning the ship is now only held together by its internal components. Several of the 88 containers that fell off the deck had washed ashore by Thursday, and authorities confirmed one container that toppled overboard contained a hazardous substance. Six vessels have been mobilised to intercept the drifting containers and other debris in the water. There were 1,368 containers on board, 11 of which contained hazardous substances. Some of the contents of containers that had washed ashore were strewn across the coastline on Thursday, including thousands of meat patties that littered the sand.

Nisshin Maru Boxes Bob Barker Between Itself and Fuel Tanker, Causes Multiple Collisions
The Japanese whaling fleet, poaching whales from Antarctica's Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, creates a collision as they attempt an illegal refuelling operation. Sea Shepherd Ship Bob Barker peacefully blocks the whalers' factory ship, Nisshin Maru, from refuelling.
The Bob Barker holds their ground, but the Nisshin Maru moves in, pinching the Bob Barker between itself and the fuel tanker Sun Laurel while blasting the bridge windows with high-powered water cannons. The bow wake from the two larger ships causes the smaller one to lose steerage, and the ensuing turbulence throws the Bob Barker off course. The Bob Barker gets helplessly tossed side to side between the two larger ships.
This video clearly shows the fault of the collision on the Nisshin Maru. According to COLREGS, the Bob Barker had the right of way, and the Nisshin Maru had no right to move closer to the Bob Barker.

[FULL] MOMENTS Gas Tanker Explodes on Chinese Highway
Video has emerged of the terrifying moment a gas tanker exploded on a highway in China, killing five people and sending visible shockwaves across the road.
People were filmed desperately trying to escape as smoke billowed from a tanker that had overturned on the major motorway in central China's Hunan province on Saturday.
After the road is engulfed in thick smoke a massive blast rocks the highway and surrounding valley.
Five people, including three firefighters, were killed in the explosion. Two fire trucks and five other vehicles were destroyed.
The tanker was carrying liquefied natural gas and had leaked around 20 tonnes before the blast, The Telegraph reports.
It is not yet known what caused the accident.

The Re-floating of the MT Phoenix tanker
The tanker, the MT Phoenix got in trouble in the vehement storm that was belting on the Kwazulu-Natal north coast on the 26th of July 2011. It eventually stranded on the beach off Sheffield Beach with its stern coming in first and as the stern got stuck it swung around until the bow almost rested on dry beach the next morning after the storm subsided...
On the 27th of July 2011, the storm had subsided and the tanker set the scene for what would bring many tourists to the area. There was a strange kind of beauty in the stranding, like a majestic elephant bull that has come to the end of the road
The first refloating attempt took place at about 16h30 on the 31st of July 2011. The ZTUG SMIT AMANDLA was the only tugboat used in the operation with the ZTUG SMIT AYANDA an onlooker. A single cable was used that was attached to the original anchor chain of the tanker. The swell was good but probably not good enough for the day and the ship didn't move during this operation. The operation was eventually disbanded.
After the first refloating attempt took place, salvaging work continued and the oil that was in the tanker were pumped out through the attached tubeline.
The second refloating attempt took place at about 16h30 on the 1st of August 2011. The ZTUG SMIT AYANDA was tied to the front of the ZTUG SMIT AMANDLA and a single cable was used that was attached to the original anchor chain of the tanker. The swell was impressive following the recently passed spring tide. The attempt swung the hull of the MT Phoenix around but the chain proofed to be weak and broke in the process, forcing the team to give up the attempt for the day.
After the second refloating attempt the ship is pushed back to its original position by the successive swells. The swip swivels around its stern which is the part where it is actually more firmly stuck and it originally stranded with its stern first as well..Later the maritime helicopter removes the crew from the ship and the operation for the day is abandoned again...
The third refloating attempt took place after dark at about 18h30 on the 3rd of August 2011. The ZTUG SMIT AYANDA was again tied to the front of the ZTUG SMIT AMANDLA and a single cable was used that was attached to the original anchor chain of the tanker. The tanker didn't want to move nothwithstanding the bigger force of the combined two tugboats. At about 18h50, the chain that was attached to the bow snapped again and in this long 30 second exposure we can clearly see the sparks that eminated as the chain was pulled at high speed through the holes.
The opportunity that lied in the remains of the spring tide was now exhausted and the operation was now postponed for a month till the next new moon and spring tide and in the meantime more salvaging and cleanup took place as well as planning for the next operation..This time two cables would be used connected to the two tugboats seperately.
On Friday the 2nd of September 2011 the final refloating exercise on the
MT Phoenix off Sheffield Beach on the Kwazulu-Natal North Coast of South Africa was to commence. The refloating required a swell of at least 2m and as New Moon went past a few days earlier, the spring tide was still dominant. It was anticipated then that inclement weather from the south would hopefully contribute to the effect and the peak of the tide was going to be at 18h27. Earlier the afternoon the two tugboats ZTUG SMIT AMANDLA and ZTUG SMIT AYANDA were already present and connected with seperate cables to the bow section of the ship. The ship was more firmly fixed on its stern side and the idea was to swivel it around by pulling the bow away from the beach to face seawards.

Saudi Arabia: fuel tanker explosion kills at least 22
At least 22 people were killed and dozens injured when a fuel truck crashed into a flyover in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Thursday, triggering an explosion that brought down an industrial building, Saudi state television reported.
A fuel tanker reportedly swerved and hit a bridge in eastern Riyadh, causing a gas leak and an explosion in a nearby industrial building, according to the state news agency SPA.
State television quoted a Saudi civil defence official as saying that 22 people died and at least 111 people were injured in the incident.

Hurricane Sandy: Huge Tanker Ship Ashore on Front Street in NY
Powerful storm surges from Superstorm Sandy caused a nearly 170-foot water tanker to run aground in Staten Island, N.Y., on Monday night.
The front third of the tanker is grounded into Front Street. The city's waterfront was largely destroyed, which includes a number of businesses on the water.
The 168-foot tanker was moored about a mile away when Sandy's powerful force propelled it toward land.
No one was on the tanker and no one was hurt as a result of it running aground.
Sandy struck the East Coast on Monday night, leaving a trail of massive flooding, power outages and destruction. President Obama has issued disaster declarations for New York and New Jersey.
