Afro Argentines
This video is about the African presence in Argentina. It includes a brief history of Afro Argentine and famous Afro Argentines. It is in English and Spanish.
The term Afro Argentine is referring to someone of African living in and/or from Argentina and/or having roots in Argentina. Of course, African descendants have other roots and lineages too.
All comments that I find offensive, racist, stereotypical and negative will not be approved. Please be respectful.
It should be noted that many persons of African descent in "Latin" America and the Caribbean do not refer to themselves as, "Afro + nationality" but either as "negros", "afrodescendiente" or by their nationality.

Thousands of workers have held a national strike in the Argentine capital, demanding that the government extend tax cuts amid spiralling inflation. The walkout was called by Hugo Moyano, the head of two powerful labour unions and a former ally of President Cristina Fernandez Kirchner. Moyano is currently being investigated on corruption charges, and Kirchner says the tax cut is impossible. Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Becoming Jewish Argentines
In "Becoming Jewish Argentines: Sephardim, Marriage Choice, and the Construction of a Jewish Argentine Identity (1920-1960)," Adriana Brodsky explores the marriage patterns of Argentine Sephardic Jewish communities, paying special attention to when Sephardim began marrying Ashkenazic Jews, thereby giving birth to a new type of Jewish identity, neither fully Ashkenazic nor fully Sephardic, but Argentine. Although initially Sephardim usually married "within," as the 20th century progressed, and new spaces for interaction of Jews from different origins became available, choosing a marriage partner outside of the group became more common. The presentation suggests that loyalties to communities of origin were slowly superseded by a sense of belonging to the Argentine nation.
Speaker Biography: Adriana M. Brodsky is a professor of history at St. Mary's College of Maryland and received her Ph.D. at Duke University.

Argentines flood the streets to protest against President Cristina Fernandez
Brandishing banners and banging on pots and pans thousands of Argentines took to streets of Buenos Aires to protest against President Cristina Fernandez's interventionist policies and combative style.
An estimated 700,000 people gathered around the city's landmark obelisk and other main avenues to march towards the Casa Rosada, the Argentine seat of government.
High crime, inflation of roughly 25 per cent a year, and a possible bid by government allies to reform the constitution to allow Ms Fernandez to run for a third term are also stoking unrest, particularly among middle-class Argentines. Her government has virtually banned dollar purchases and it limited imports this year, worsening a steep economic slowdown.
Protesters in neighbourhoods throughout Buenos Aires waved signs demanding freedom, transparency and an end to crime and corruption.
The event, known in Argentina as 8N, for the 8th of November, was planned months in advance and was heavily advertised in social media networks.

FMP - Mark Wells on Afro-Argentines
Although people don't usually think of black people when they think of Argentina, the country does indeed have a history of African descendents. Given the common belief among Argentine citizens that all blacks who reside in the country are foreigners, Afro-Argentines often must fight to be recognized as both black and Argentine. Although the black population of Argentina is small, there are many organizations and artists who are fighting for the recognition of the history, culture and population of black Argentina.

Argentines rally over inflation and corruption
Tens of thousands of demonstrators take to the streets of Buenos Aires in Argentina's largest anti-government protest in over a decade.
Thousands of people took to the streets of Buenos Aires on Thursday night to voice their anger over the government's failure to bring the crime rate and inflation under control, and against corruption within the government.
The march continued for around four hours and was the largest anti-government demonstration to be seen in Argentina in over a decade.
Demonstrators filled the Plaza de Mayo in front of the presidential palace, banging pots and pans, and holding up banners condemning the government and planned changes to the constitution.
Many Argentines fear that President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner could push through constitutional changes to allow herself to run for re-election.

A decade since Argentina's economic collapse
Buenos Aires, Argentina (NTN24) - Argentines take to streets to remember ten years since economic meltdown, set Christmas tree ablaze outside presidential palace.
Argentines took to the streets on Tuesday ten years after a 2001 economic breakdown turned those same streets into a battleground.
A decade ago, then-President Fernando de la Rua was forced to flee the country in a helicopter from the roof of the government palace as enraged citizens demonstrated.
A bankrupt Argentina declared the world's biggest-ever debt default, froze bank accounts, and spiralled into chaos. The peso was severely devalued, Argentines lost billions in savings, and five presidents filed in and out of office in a matter of weeks.
When the smoke had cleared, 38 demonstrators had been killed and Argentina was in shatters, without a clear leader and facing an uncertain future.
Demonstrators cut roads, burned tyres, marched and chanted throughout Buenos Aires to remember the dead and continue to warn against the policies that led to the meltdown.
Some left candles and messages on plaques to remember those killed in 2001, and demonstrator Diego Alejandro lauded a new generation of protesters.
"We are proud to be here in the street, proud to continue with the same idea. Our dead are being vindicated, all those who died for the people's struggle. Today they aren't with us, but morally and spiritually they struggle with us. And these young people here renew themselves and come out to fight for a more just society and for a better world," Alejandro said.
Protesters also set the national Christmas tree outside the presidential palace ablaze.
The memory of December 2001 is still fresh for some, when thousand poured into the streets, clanging pots and pans and trying to break open cash machines.
Banks pulled down iron curtains, but frustrated savers tried to force their way in, and police ruthlessly cracked down on them.
But for others, an economic comeback has all but buried the image of De la Rua fleeing the country.
Riding a soy price boom, unemployment is currently at a 20-year low and Argentina has the fastest growing economy in Latin America.

Argentines protest foreign companies
A Canadian company has suspended a proposed gold mining project in Argentina following a series of protests.
Environmental groups and residents in the town of Famatina, near the proposed site where mining company Osisko wants an open pit goldmine say the mine would pollute the local water supply.
"They will have to pass over our dead bodies," says Juan Carlos Rivero, a nut farmer in the north western province of La Rioja.
Residents in Famatina fear the mine would take and possibly contaminate the water supply.
"Water is worth more than gold", read one sign, a reference its scarcity in this arid region.
The 800-person strong protests, along with similar protests in Peru, El Salvador, Chile, and Argentina where local communities demandedtheir interests take precedence over those of mainly foreign mining companies, forced Osisko to suspend exploration plans in Famatina for the time being.
In the capital, masked demonstrators threw rocks at British businesses in Buenos Aires to protest Britain's continued control of the Falkland islands as Prince William arrived in the country.
About 60 members of the group Quebracho, calling William the 'Pirate Prince', marched to demand sovereignity of the islands for Argentina.
"We came here today to speak out against this
character, but most of all to argue the sovereignty of Las Malvinas. They are trying to step on that sovereignty by taking about people's right to self-determination," said leftist leader Juan Miguel Gomez.
Britain has controlled the islands, about
480 kilometres off the southern Argentine coast, since 1833.
In 1982, Britain sent a naval force and thousands of troops to reclaim the islands after Argentine forces sent by the country's then-military junta occupied them.
About 650 Argentine and 255 British troops died in the 10-week conflict.

Afroargentines - Trailer - TWN
Most Argentines, if you ask, will tell you: "In Argentina there are no black people". So opens Afroargentines, a film which unearths the hidden history of black people in Argentina and their contributions to Argentine culture and society, from the slaves who fought in the revolutionary wars against Spain, to the contemporary struggles of black Argentines against racism and marginalization. The story that unfolds provides a counter narrative to the national myth of Argentina's exclusively European heritage.
