Sic transit gloria mundi is a Latin phrase that means "Thus passes the glory of the world". It has been interpreted as "Worldly things are fleeting." It is possibly an adaptation of a phrase in Thomas à Kempis's 1418 work The Imitation of Christ: "O quam cito transit gloria mundi" ("How quickly the glory of the world passes away").^[1][2]

The phrase was used in the ritual of papal coronation ceremonies between 1409, when it was used at the coronation of Alexander V,^[3] and 1963. As the newly chosen pope proceeded from the sacristy of St. Peter's Basilica in his sedia gestatoria, the procession stopped three times. On each occasion a papal master of ceremonies would fall to his knees before the pope, holding a silver or brass reed, bearing a tow of smoldering flax. For three times in succession, as the cloth burned away, he would say in a loud and mournful voice, "Sancte Pater, sic transit gloria mundi!" ("Holy Father, so passes worldly glory!") These words, thus addressed to the pope, served as a reminder of the transitory nature of life and earthly honors. The stafflike instrument used in the aforementioned ceremony is known as a "sic transit gloria mundi", named for the master of ceremonies' words.^[4][5][6]

Emily Dickinson used the line in a whimsical valentine written to William Howland in 1852 and subsequently published in the Springfield Daily Republican:^[7]

Sic transit gloria mundi

How doth the busy bee,

Dum vivimus vivamus,

I stay my enemy!

This parodied her education by its use of stock phrases and morals.^[8]

Gloria Mundi was an early punk rock/gothic rock band. The name comes from the Latin for the glory of the world. This could be a reference to the phrase "Sic transit gloria mundi" meaning "this is how the glory of the world passes".^{[citation needed]}

The members of Gloria Mundi included Eddie Maelov (real name Eddie Francis), their male vocalist, and Sunshine Patteson (now working as Sunshine Gray)^{[citation needed]}, their female vocalist and keyboard player, cc played tenor saxophone. A bassist known as Ice (real name Roland Oxland, a Dagenham native who had learned his craft in a band called "Yours" with Stevie Shears of Ultravox and Faith Global and John Clarke of "Daddio Clarke and the Macon Wailers") played on the I Individual record. When he left to form a band with Stevie Shears he was replaced by later bassist Nigel Ross Scott. The guitarist, known as 'Beethoven,' was Pete Vos (pronounced 'vass'), who later went on to have very limited success as a solo artist on RCA.^{[citation needed]} The drummer was Mike Nicholls. Following the departure of Pete Vos, the guitarist Kirby, ex-Stretch, joined the band for a period and played on the second album 'The Word Is Out'.

After Gloria Mundi disbanded Eddie Maelov and Sunshine Patteson went on to produce music for Survival Records as Eddie and Sunshine. cc contributed a memorable saxophone solo to the Ultravox song "Hiroshima Mon Amour", and Nigel Ross Scott went on to play bass with Bruce Woolley and The Camera Club and Re-Flex, a 1980s pop group.

It was and is generally noted,that the gothic punk band 'Bauhaus' completely changed thier music and presentation after gigging with,hearing and watching Gloria Mundi.It was also known at the time that early Ultravox and Gloria Mundi had previous connections between Jon Foxx and Eddie Maelov.Eddie Maelov being the principal writer as well as lead vocalist for Gloria Mundi.

Generally thought by thier fans to be way ahead of thier time,Gloria Mundis stage performance was regarded as revolutionary both in its visual imagery and underlying story-themes of isolation,individuality,sexuality,meaning and aggression.

Thier later incarnation as 'Eddie and Sunshine' ,an electro-pop cabaret style producing several outstanding singles and one more mediocre album 'perfect strangers' has recently been re-released on amazon and itunes for download,however the overwhelming power of Gloria Mundi,even 35 years on,continues and simply will not go away.We await the re-release of thier 2 albums.

Mircea Cantor (born 1977) is a Romanian-born artist who follows in the tradition of French artist Marcel Duchamp in that he employs readymade objects to elucidate the ambiguities of everyday life .^[1] Cantor's choice of media is diverse, in that he has employed video, animation, sculpture, drawing, painting, and installation in his practice.^[2]

Cantor's 2005 video work, "'Deeparture", which was on view in the contemporary galleries at The Museum of Modern Art, features a deer and a wolf together in a pristine white box environment. The visual effects are often ambiguous. Cantor's work is included in The Museum of Modern Art,^[3] New York, the Walker Art Center,^[4] Minneapolis, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC; Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Kunsthaus Zurich; Museum Abteiberg, Monchengladbach, Germany; Magasin 3, Stockholm, Sweden as well as in other collections worldwide. He was awarded with Ricard Prize in Paris in 2004; in 2011 he won Best Dance Short Film at Tiburon International Film Festival with Tracking Happiness movie. Also in 2011, he is the winner of Marcel Duchamp Prize 2011 in Paris.
