What has changed since Maltese became an official EU language?
Did you know about the complexities of multilingualism in Malta? English, Maltese and even Italian are all used to communicate with other islanders. There have been significant changes in the status of the Maltese language since Malta joined the EU: "We didn't have a culture of translation. The fact that Maltese is an official language [of the EU] has created something which actually didn't happen before. I think it has given Maltese more status in peoples' minds. It is no longer the language of the poor and uneducated. I think the ideal for a country like Malta, which is tiny, is that our heritage should be a heritage of bilingualism. We should be giving our children a possibility of growing up with a minimum of two languages, which for us was always a reality," explains Dr Sandra Vella, senior lecturer at the Institute of Linguistics, University of Malta. To find out more, watch our interview with Dr Vella and Professor Ray Fabri, Chairman of the Institute of Linguistics at the University of Malta. Artist - George scicluna from Gozo (Malta) . . (Maltese Language)
George Scicluna was born on the 16th of July 1966 in Victoria, Gozo. He studied art at the Salvatore Dimech School of Arts in Mosta where he obtained a diploma in Graphic Design. He continued his studies at the School of Arts, Malta, and, eventually, at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Perugia, Italy. In the late 1980s he worked as a scenographer with the Impresa Fasano, Rome, painting perspectives for several opera theaters in Italy. George won the first prize in several art competitions. He took part in numerous collective exhibitions and presented four solo exhibitions to date. In 2006, he was invited by Peter Howson, an internationally renowned Scottish artist, to make a joint exhibition in Glasgow, Scotland. Georges work is to be found on display alongside Peter Howsons in the Third Step Gallery in Glasgow and also in many private collections locally and internationally. During his long career, George has created some outstanding scenes that are so striking, that once seen they are never forgotten.

Crash Course in Maltese in a Taxi
Without mucking about, we start the New Year with the beginning of a brand new series, this time Malta, taken in May of 2012. In this first part a friendly taxi driver explains about the Maltese language. I also wanted him to do one of my "Spot the Language" series, but he was a bit camera shy - (maybe the tax office doesn't know he has a taxi business or something - it's all about tax in Malta!) Enjoy. By the way the paino music (that's piano music but with a more accurate spelling) at the intro is a special composition just for this series so that I don't get third party ads making pennies for music companies who think they own everything. They're MY pennies! Hence I went on the piano and improvised a bit, thinkning about Malta, and took the least excruciating bit for the series theme tune.

Arnold Cassola - Malta: People, Toponymy, Language
Malta - People, toponymy, Language (4 BC - 1600) is a new book by Arnold Cassola, published by The Farsons Foundation. The publication aims to present rare material regarding the Maltese people, language and toponymy in previous centuries. The first chapter, concerns a thriving community of Maltese living in Trapani in the 15th century. These Maltese found refuge, comfort, wealth and prosperity in Trapani and the surrounding area and became involved in various trades, financial transactions and other general activities. The second chapter examines the reference to the islands of Malta, Gozo and Lampas in the earliest known portulan of the Mediterranean, the Periplous attributed to Skylax of Karyanda, dating back to the 4th Century BC The author discusses the possibility that the name Lampas, normally associated with Lampedusa, could actually be a reference to the island of Comino. The vast richness of toponymic references to Malta, Gozo and Comino to be found in three ancient Italian portulans (1296-15th century) is dealt with in the third chapter. These Maltese place-names and landmarks are to be listed amongst the earliest known references to Maltese toponyms. The fourth chapter studies the toponymic references to the Maltese archipelago contained in the 1572 map which Girolamo Porro had charted for Tommaso Porcacchi's Le isole piv famose del mondo. The fifth and sixth chapters deal with the Maltese language in the 16th century. The former chapter, compiles a number of ...

The Maltese Alphabet
This video interests all those who want to learn more about the Maltese language or who will visit Malta soon and wish to get more familiar with the national language. It is also ideal for those who plan to live on the Maltese Islands for quite some time. My intetion is to provide the actual and correct information on Maltese since all the youtube videos I have seen, all have spelling mistakes or mistakes in the pronunciation. The Maltese language is not an Arabic dialect (unlike what other videos on youtube have stated). It is similar to Arabic because it is a Semitic language but written in Latin script. Please feel free to comment, question, suggest or message me.
