Arthur Kazumi Miki, CM (born 1936) is an activist and politician in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He was president of the National Association of Japanese Canadians from 1984 to 1992, and is best known for his work in seeking compensation for Japanese-Canadians who were interned by the Government of Canada during World War II.

Miki's younger brother Roy is a well-known Canadian poet and academic.

Early life[link]

Miki was born in British Columbia, and was among the 22,000 Japanese Canadians from that province who were displaced and interned during World War II. He and his family were forced to leave their six-hectare fruit farm near Vancouver, and were relocated to a one-room house in Ste. Agathe, Manitoba that they were forced to share with other families. He was educated in a French school, despite the fact that he did not speak the language.^[1]

Miki received a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Manitoba in 1969, and a Master of Education degree in 1975.^[2] He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Winnipeg in 1999. He was a teacher for 29 years, and was for several years a high school and elementary school principal in the Transcona neighbourhood of Winnipeg.^[3] In 1991, he was appointed to the Order of Canada.^[4]

Redress for Japanese Canadians[link]

Miki became president of the National Association of Japanese Canadians in 1984, and announced that his organization would seek a formal apology from the Canadian government and full compensation for property that was confiscated in the 1940s. His announcement was seen as an important, as the NAJC had previously been divided on the issue of reparations.^[5]

Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's government responded to Miki's request by expressing its regret for the wartime internment policy, but did not offer financial compensation.^[6] Trudeau argued that other ethnic groups, including the Acadians and Chinese-Canadians, had also suffered historical discrimination, and said that the government could not begin to correct all past historical injustices.^[7]

Following the election of Brian Mulroney's Progressive Conservatives in 1984, Multiculturalism Minister Jack Murta announced that the government would offer a formal apology to Japanese-Canadians.^[8] The Mulroney government also offered $6 million for a foundation dedicated to human rights projects, but did not offer individual compensation.^[9] Miki rejected the settlement figure as arbitrary, and called for a formally negotiated settlement.^[10]

Miki had a good working relationship with Murta despite their disagreements over policy, and described him as having a good understanding of the issues affecting minority groups.^[11] His relationship with Otto Jelinek, appointed as Murta's successor in 1985, was by contrast very poor. Jelinek argued that any apology to Japanese-Canadians should be made as part of a larger apology to other ethnic groups who were victimized by past government decisions, and argued that an apology to a specific group would set a poor precedent.^[12] In 1986, Jelinek offered a compensation package of $10 million to be administered by the Japanese-Canadian community.^[13] Miki again rejected the offer, and called for a negotiated settlement.

In May 1986, Miki released a Price Waterhouse study which indicated that Japanese-Canadians had lost $443 million in the 1940s due to discriminatory government policies. The release did not recommend a specific compensation figure, but was intended to provide a framework for further negotiations. Jelinek responded by saying that the report would have little effect on the government's plans.^[14]

David Crombie replaced Jelinek as Multiculturalism Minister in late June 1986. Miki welcomed the change, saying that Jelinek "[had] been dealing around us instead of dealing with us and the group that represents us", and adding "[f]or our particular issue, I'm not too sure he had much sympathy for it."^[15] Discussions over compensation soon became stalled again, notwithstanding the change. Crombie offered a $12 million community fund without individual compensation, which Miki rejected as inadequate.^[16] Miki's association requested $25,000 for each of the 14,000 survivors and a $50 million community fund, figures that Crombie rejected as beyond the government's means.^[17]

A breakthrough finally occurred shortly before the 1988 federal election, when Miki and Gerry Weiner (the Mulroney government's fourth Multiculturalism minister in as many years) concluded private negotiations for a comprehensive settlement.^[18] The government agreed to pay $21,000 for each survivor and $12 million for a community fund, and pledged to set up a Canadian Race Relations Foundation.^[19] Mulroney also delivered an apology for the wartime internment policy to the Canadian House of Commons.^[20] Miki described the settlement as marking "a great day for justice and human rights" and "a historic day for Canadians of Japanese ancestry who have been struggling so long to resolve the injustices of the 1940s".^[21]

The Canadian Race Relations Foundation was later established by the government of Jean Chrétien. Miki himself served as a director.^[22]

Political candidate[link]

Miki campaigned for the Liberal Party of Canada in the 1993 federal election, challenging New Democratic Party incumbent Bill Blaikie in the working-class riding of Winnipeg—Transcona. He received an endorsement from the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees, a railway union of some influence in the area.^[23] Miki was regarded as a star candidate and ran a strong campaign, but fell 219 votes short on election day.^[24]

He later campaigned for the Manitoba Liberal Party in Radisson in the 1995 provincial election, but finished second to New Democratic Party incumbent Marianne Cerilli. A poor central campaign by the Liberals prevented him from mounting an effective challenge.^[25]

In addition to his work on the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, Miki has also been a director of the Japanese Canadian Redress Foundation, and served as executive director of the Organization for Co-operation in Overseas Development.^[22]

In February 1998, he was appointed as a Citizenship Judge in Manitoba by Citizenship and Immigration Minister Lucienne Robillard.^[26]

In 2003, he lent his support to Avvy Go's efforts to seek an apology for past state discrimination against Chinese Canadians.^[27]

Mark Crilley is an American comic book creator and children's book author/illustrator. He is the creator of Miki Falls, Akiko, and Brody's Ghost. He is also noted for his instructional videos for drawing in the manga-style.^[1]

Akiko is an American comic book series written and drawn by Mark Crilley and published by Sirius Entertainment. The series ran for fifty two issues and was a thirteen-time Eisner nominee. Miki Falls[link]

Miki Falls is an OEL manga series created by Mark Crilley and published by HarperCollins under its HarperTeen imprint. It is structured as a four-volume series, each book taking place during one of the seasons over the course of a year. It follows the main protagonist Miki Yoshida in her senior year of high school, and she plans of making it the best year yet. However, a strange new boy arrives in town and Miki is going to find out what he's up to. It has been optioned for development as a feature film by Paramount and Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B, with Sera Gamble attached as screenwriter.

Brody's Ghost[link]

Mark has announced in recent videos a new comic book series that is going to be published by Dark Horse Comics. The story, set in the near future, is that of a young man unaware of his magical powers. Only when he is approached by a mysterious girl in need of his help he begins with a training process to awaken and master his powers.

Book One in the Brody's Ghost series was released July 14, 2010. Book Two is set for a January release in 2011. Upon release, the series received positive feedback including a grade B+ from Detroit News's Eric Henrickson.

Brody's Ghost contains several differences from Crilley's previous work, Miki Falls. The story follows a male main character and contains more action and fighting sequences.

Personal life[link]

Crilley distributes drawing advice to artists via YouTube videos and his DeviantArt account. In August 2010, he starred in some how to draw videos for Funimation on demand. Mark Crilley's wife is Miki Crilley who he named Miki Falls after. The two have a daughter, Mio, and a son, Matthew.

Miquel "Miki" Roqué Farrero (born 8 July 1988 in Tremp, Lleida, Catalonia) is a Spanish footballer who plays for Real Betis. Mainly a central defender, he can also appear as a defensive midfielder.

Football career[link]

At only 17, Roqué was signed from local side UE Lleida by Liverpool, managed by countryman Rafael Benítez.^[1] He came on as a substitute in both legs of the 2006 FA Youth Cup Final against Manchester City, and made his first-team debut in the 2006–07 UEFA Champions League against Galatasaray SK on 5 December 2006 - also coming from the bench, replacing another Spaniard, Xabi Alonso - in a 2–3 away loss.^[2]

Roqué spent the end of the 2006–07 season on loan at Oldham Athletic in League One,^[3] appearing rarely for the Latics as the club finished in sixth position. In the following two years, still in that predicament, he played in his country, with very different fates: in 2007–08, he only appeared once for second division side Xerez CD. In the following season, he was much more used by FC Cartagena, helping the Murcian club promote from level three.^[4]

On 16 June 2009, Liverpool released Roqué after a four-year stay. He returned to Spain and joined Real Betis' reserves the following month.^[5] In the 2010–11 season, he started appearing with the main squad.

On 5 March 2011, after undergoing a routine check-up due to back problems, Roqué was diagnosed with pelvic cancer,^[6][7] undergoing surgery to excise a malignant tumor the following day. The club sought to help the player raise funds to pay for treatment by the sale of wrist-bands to fans.^[8]

Miki Ando (安藤 美姫, Andō Miki^?, born December 18, 1987) is a Japanese figure skater. She is the 2007 and 2011 World Champion, 2011 Four Continents Champion, 2004 World Junior Champion, and a three-time (2004, 2005 & 2010) Japanese National Champion.

Ando is the first and only female skater to complete a quadruple jump successfully in competition. She accomplished this at the 2002–2003 Junior Grand Prix Final in The Hague.

Ando was born in Nagoya, Japan in 1987. Her father died when she was eight years old.^[2] In 2006, she joined Toyota and also entered Chukyo University as an adult learner, from which she graduated in March 2011.^[3][4] Ando learned English during her time training in the U.S.^[2]

Early career[link]

She began skating in 1996 at the age of eight.^[5] She soon turned to Yuko Monna whose students at that time included Mao Asada and Mai Asada. Beginning in the 2000–2001 season, she was coached by Nobuo Satō, and her program already featured a triple lutz-triple loop.

In the 2001–2002 season she won the Japan Junior Championships, as well as the Junior Grand Prix Final. She also earned bronze medals at the Japanese Championships (senior) and at the Junior Worlds.

Ando made history the next season at the 2002-2003 Junior Grand Prix Final, when she landed a quadruple salchow and became the first female skater to land a quadruple jump of any kind in a competition. She remains the only lady ever to perform this feat. That season she defended her national Junior crown and took silver at the World Junior Championships.

Ando was prominent in 2003–2004, winning all her junior games including the Junior Grand Prix Final, her third consecutive national junior title, and the Junior Worlds. She also won the Japan Championships (senior) and placed 4th at her first senior World Championships.

2004–2005 season[link]

The 2004–2005 season was her first full season as a senior skater. She won two medals in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series and qualified for the Grand Prix Final, where she placed fourth. She won her second national senior title and placed sixth at 2005 Worlds.

2005–2006 season[link]

Ando relocated to the United States to train with Carol Heiss Jenkins in preparation for the 2005–2006 season which included the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino. The season began well, when she won the silver medal at the 2005 Cup of Russia, but she finished 4th at the 2005 NHK Trophy and narrowly qualified for the Grand Prix Final, where she placed 4th. At Japanese Nationals, she placed 6th.

Ando was named to the Japanese Olympic team in accordance with the criteria that were to include two seasons into consideration. At the Olympics, she placed 15th, after falling three times in her free skate, once on her quad attempt. She was not placed on the team to the World Championships the following month.

2006–2007 season[link]

Ando changed coaches again for the 2006–2007 season. Training with her new coach, Nikolai Morozov, Ando made a strong showing in the 2006–2007 season, winning the 2006 Skate America and taking silver at the 2006 Trophée Eric Bompard. She qualified for the Grand Prix Final, where she placed 5th. It was later revealed that Ando, along with the rest of the Japanese team, competed in Saint Petersburg while suffering stomach flu.

At the Japanese Nationals, Ando dislocated her shoulder while performing a spin in her free skate but skated on to place second overall behind Mao Asada.

At the 2007 Worlds, Ando placed second in both the short program and the free skate, and scored a total of 195.09 points to win the World Championship by less than one point over Asada. Ando set new personal bests in both the short program and the free skate, and a new personal best total score. She was named one of Vogue Japan's "Women of the Year for 2007"^[6] and received six other awards including the "most valuable mention" from the Japanese Olympic Committee.^[7][8]

2007–2008 season[link]

Ando's 2007–2008 season began with a silver medal at the 2007 Skate America but went down to 4th place finish at the 2007 NHK Trophy, where she fell three times in her free skate. She did not qualify for the Grand Prix Final.

At the Japan Championships, she won the free skate to place 2nd overall, again behind Asada.

In the following February, Ando competed for the first time at Four Continents, where she attempted a quadruple Salchow but popped it to a double. She won the bronze medal. At Worlds, Ando was 8th after the short program and was forced to withdraw during her free skate due to a leg muscle strain she had been suffering since that morning.

2008–2009 season[link]

In the 2008–2009 Grand Prix season, Ando placed third after Kim Yu-Na and Yukari Nakano at Skate America and placed 2nd, behind Kim, again, at the Cup of China. At the Grand Prix Final, Ando stayed on her foot after an attempted quadruple salchow in her free skate program, the first time in competition since 2004, though the rotations were not considered enough and the jump was downgraded. Despite her last place finish, Ando stated that she was very happy with her performance, and that she would continue to work on her quad salchow.^[9]

At the Japan Championships, she was in 3rd place after the short program. During the free skate warm-up, she collided with Fumie Suguri, and injured her knee. She placed 3rd place, and earned one of three spots to represent Japan at the 2009 World Championships. Before the event, the Japanese skating federation wanted her to leave Morozov.^[2] There, she won the bronze medal with a total of 190.38 after placing fourth in the short program and second in the free program.

Ando represented Japan in a team competition, 2009 ISU World Team Trophy, in Tokyo, Japan, where she placed 3rd at the short program, 6th at the free skate and 5th overall. Team Japan was placed 3rd, winning the bronze medal.

2009–2010 season[link]

Japan Skating Federation set, as one of its criteria for choosing the skaters to send to the 2010 Winter Olympics, the highest Japanese medal finisher in the Grand Prix Final. With this in mind, Ando competed at Rostelecom Cup, where she placed 3rd in the short program and won the free skate to win the competition overall. At the NHK Trophy, she placed 2nd in both the short program and the free skate, which placed her 1st overall. The two wins qualified Ando for the 2009–2010 Grand Prix Final, which was held in Tokyo.

At this GP Final, she scored 66.20 points in the short program and was placed in 1st at that segment of the competition, 0.56 points ahead of second place finisher Yu-Na Kim. In the free skate, she placed in 2nd scoring 119.74 points, and winning the silver medal overall behind Kim but ahead of the bronze medalist Akiko Suzuki, which made Ando earn a place to the 2010 Winter Olympics.

At the Japanese Championships, Ando placed 4th overall. At the 2010 Winter Olympics, the short program took place on February 23, where Ando executed a triple lutz-triple loop combination, however the triple loop was downgraded. She earned levels 3 and 4 on spins. She scored 64.76, ending in fourth in this segment. ^[10] In the free skate on 25th, Ando placed sixth with 124.10 points and settled for fifth overall with 188.86 points.^[11] Although she originally intended to miss the 2010-11 season, she changed her mind following the Olympics.^[2]

Ando competed at the 2010 World Championships. She placed eleventh in the short program with 55.78 points due to a fall in her opening triple lutz, but came back third in the free skate with 122.04. She earned 177.82 points to finish fourth overall.

2010–2011 season[link]

Ando was assigned to Cup of China and the Rostelecom Cup for the 2010–2011 ISU Grand Prix season. In August, shortly before the beginning of the season, she changed her training base while abroad from Hackensack NJ, USA, to Daugavpils, Latvia.^[12] She was originally said to have intended to move to Russia, but this plan had to be changed due to the smog and heat wave in Moscow.^[12]

At Cup of China, Ando attempted a triple Lutz-triple Loop combination in the short program, but the loop was deemed underrotated by the Technical Panel and she placed in 3rd in this segment. She won the free skate segment with a clean performance and won the event overall, ahead of silver medalist Akiko Suzuki and bronze medalist Alena Leonova.

Ando competed with a back injury at Rostelecom Cup after a collision with Abzal Rakimgaliev, from Kazakhstan, earlier in the week in practice.^[13] Despite the injury, she skated two clean programs, and though the underrotated triple Flip in the short program left her in 5th place going in to the free skate, she was able to win that segment with 120.47 points, winning the gold medal ahead of silver medalist Akiko Suzuki and bronze medalist Ashley Wagner.

With two gold medals in the Grand Prix circuit, Ando qualified for the Grand Prix Final in Beijing, where she performed her renewed short program that was completed only a week prior. Mistakes on two jumps left her to 5th place following the short program, but she performed a near flawless free skate which earned her 122.70 points for 1st place in that segment of the competition. However, this was not enough to make up the gap from the short program, and she stayed 5th with 173.15 points.

On December 26, Ando won her third Japanese National title over silver medalist Mao Asada and bronze medalist Kanako Murakami, and these three were nominated into the Japanese team for the World Championships, which at the time were scheduled to be held in Tokyo in March 2011. At the Four Continents Championships in February, Ando placed first in both the short program and free skating segments to win the competition overall. Her total score of 201.34 was a season's and personal best.

Ando won the gold medal at the World Championships in Moscow, Russia, beating silver medalist Yu-Na Kim by 1.29 points and bronze medalist Carolina Kostner by 11.11 points.^[14]

2011–2012 season[link]

In June, it was reported that Ando would sit out the 2011-2012 Grand Prix series.^[15] She later decided not to compete all season, and in ISU events she only showed herself once as an invited skater at the Exhibition of the World Team Trophy. Instead, Ando participated this season in numerous shows worldwide, and among them, a benefit event for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami of 11 March 2011, called "Reborn Garden"^[16], should be noted for being planned, co-choreographed and co-produced by Ando herself.^[17] The characteristic choreography by Ando and Tsurutani is to a non-stop sequence of various music assembled into one story scene, similar to a ballet program.^{[18] [19]}
