Jimmy Dorsey & Helen O'Connell - Embraceable You, 1941
Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra with Helen O'Connell -- Embraceable You (G.& I.Gershwin), Decca 1941 (USA)
NOTE: Helen O'CONNELL (b.1920 in Lima, Ohio -- d.1993 in San Diego, CA) American singer, actress and dancer. In 1939 she joined the Jimmy Dorsey's band and achieved her best selling records in the early 1940s (. "Green Eyes", "Brazil", "Amapola," "Tangerine", "Yours"). In each of these Latin-influenced numbers, Bob Eberly crooned the song which Helen then reprised in an up-tempo arrangement. O'Connell was selected by Down Beat readers as best female singer in 1940 and 1941 and won the 1940 Metronome magazine poll for best female vocalist. However, being on peak of her career O'Connell retired from show business upon her first marriage, in 1943. When her marriage ended in 1951, she made comeback appearances on tv. She was one of the first "girls" on NBC's The Today Show, and she had her own NBC program, Here's Hollywood, conducting interviews with celebrities, often in their own homes. Later, she also recorded duets with Bing Crosby, Johnny Mercer, and Dean Martin.

JD's (JayDee's) Boogie Woogie By Jimmy Dorsey
Jimmy Dorsey was a prominent American jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, trumpeter and big band leader. Along with brother Tommy they formed the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, but split in 1935, each with his own band. He had numerous big hits in the 30s-50s, several featuring vocalists Bob Eberly and Helen O'Connell. In 1953 he again combined with Tommy Dorsey with the renamed band "The Fabulous Dorseys". His recording of So Rare, released in 1957, reached #2 on the Billboard chart. This selection, also released in 1957, was the flip side of June Night, which also hit the Billboard chart.

This Scene expresses- FEAR- noun: an emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger (usually accompanied by a desire to flee or fight). noun: a feeling of anxiety and agitation caused by the presence or nearness of danger, evil, pain, etc.; timidity; dread; terror; fright; apprehension. Terrify not your soul with vain imaginary fears. By realizing that you are the one feeding the fire, you can start to take control of your fears. Panic is a vicious cycle that can be broken. When you start to have irrational fears you need to take action quick. Eleanor Roosevelt once said: "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing, which you think you cannot do." We must stop running away from things that frighten us, face our fears head on, and do the thing we fear the most. Most of the time we'll find out that the "thing" was not that scary after all. Our imaginations had behaved like a super fertilizer and grown a grotesque monstrosity in our minds. Remember, our imaginations are incredibly powerful. They can work against us, creating horrible images that leave us paralyzed with fear and they can also work for us, building a world where everything we do is an adventure, a miracle. And the most amazing thing is that we hold the power to control our minds - we allow fear to dominate our lives or we choose to dominate fear. Those are our only two choices.

Tommy Dorsey 1943 - Fascinating Rhythm - Girl Crazy - Stereo
The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra plays Sy Oliver's amazing arrangement of George Gershwin's "Fascinating Rhythm" in the 1943 MGM musical "Girl Crazy." Mickey Rooney mimes to Arthur Schutt on piano.
I've replaced the audio on the mono soundtrack with stereo from the CD. Stereo tracks exist since MGM recorded the music using multiple mics before mixing it down to mono for the film soundtrack.
Happily, dedicated audio techs preserved the orchestral angles on 1/4" tape when Louis B. Mayer ordered all original elements destroyed in the early 50s.
Here's the list of musicians at the January 12, 1943 recording session at MGM Studios in Culver City.
TRUMPETS: George Seaberg, Pete Candoli, Ray Linn, Larry Brooks, Ziggy Elman
TROMBONES: Tommy Dorsey, Dave Jacobs, Sol Train, Jimmy Skiles
REEDS: Freddie Stulce (clarinet & alto saxophone), Harry Schuchman (alto & baritone saxophone), Manny Gershman (clarinet & alto saxophone), Heinie Beau (clarinet & tenor saxophone), Don Lodice (tenor saxophone)
RHYTHM: Milt Raskin, Arthur Schutt (piano), Denny Sandole (guitar), Phil Stephens, George Boujie (bass), Moe Purtill (drums)
VIOLINS: Si Miroff, Bernie Tinterow, Lenny Posner (concertmaster), Bill Ehrenkrantz, Alex Beller, Eugene Lamas, Albert Bertchamp, I. Boguslawski, Sam Albert, Sam Fiedler, Cyril Towbin, Jaime Overton, Louis Sarli, Otto Landau, Sarah Kreindler, Mischa Levienne
VIOLAS: Lenny Atkins, Sam Ross, Virginia Majewski, Reuben Marcus, Sam Noble
