The Bahamas
The Bahamas officially the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, is an English-speaking country consisting of 29 islands, 661 cays, and 2,387 islets (rocks). It is located in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti) and the Caribbean Sea, northwest of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and southeast of the United States of America (nearest to the state of Florida). Its total land area is almost 14 000 km², with an estimated population of 330,000. Its capital is Nassau.
Originally inhabited by Arawakan Taino people, The Bahamas were the site of Columbus' first landfall in the New World in 1492. Although the Spanish never colonised The Bahamas, they shipped the native Lucayans (as the Bahamian Taino settlers referred to themselves) to slavery in Hispaniola. The islands were mostly deserted from 1513 to 1650, when British colonists from Bermuda settled on the island of Eleuthera.
The Bahamas became a crown colony in 1718 when the British clamped down on piracy. Following the American War of Independence, thousands of pro-British loyalists and enslaved Africans moved to The Bahamas and set up a plantation economy. The slave trade was abolished in the British Empire in 1807 and many Africans liberated from slave ships by the Royal Navy were settled in The Bahamas during the 19th century. Slavery itself was abolished in 1834 and the descendants of enslaved and liberated African form the bulk of The Bahamas's population today.
Economic activity is mostly based on tourism and financial services. A relatively high degree of economic freedom has made The Bahamas one of the most prosperous countries in the Caribbean region. The financial sectors domestic and offshore activities contribute around 15 percent of GDP. The economy has a very competitive tax regime. The government derives its revenue from import tariffs, license fees, property and stamp taxes, but there is no income tax, corporate tax, capital gains tax, value-added tax (VAT), or wealth tax. Payroll taxes fund social insurance benefits. In the most recent year, overall tax revenue as a percentage of GDP was 21.8 per cent.
The Bahamas has the 47th freest economy in the world according to the Heritage Foundation 2010 Index of Economic Freedom. The Bahamas is ranked 7th out of 29 countries in the South and Central America/Caribbean region, and its overall score is higher than the regional and world averages. Total government spending, including consumption and transfer payments, is relatively low. In the most recent year, government spending equaled 23.4 percent of GDP. Authorities are committed to improving the transparency of budget planning. Annual FDI into The Bahamas is $700 million a year. The Bahamian legal system is based on British common law.

Tour Old Nassau - The Bahamas - History & Travel - On Voyage.tv
The Bahamas contains over 700 islands and 2,000 cays totaling 100,000 square miles. Not as small as you might think, this popular Caribbean destination is overflowing with culture and history. Get a comprehensive tour of Old Nassau, the historic center of The Bahamas. Because of the ports treasured safe harbor, the city preserves its British colonial style buildings and architecture. Originally built to protect the island from attacks, there are three forts in the area, including Fort Charlotte. For a tasty and authentic bite, stop by McKenzies in Potters Cay. Serving up a fresh conch salad, this hotspot presents the centerpiece and Bahamian staple of the islands fish dishes. Dive right back into more culture at The National Arts Gallery of the Bahamas, a beautifully restored building housing both modern and native Bahamian art. Stroll down the Queens Staircase, which was originally built as a means of escape for soldiers in a nearby fort. Now it is used for tourists who marvel at the fact that every part of the staircase, as well as its adjacent passageway, were carved by hand. End this historic tour of charming Old Nassau with a walk on the beach at sunset.

When the Kyles arrive at the Atlantis Paradise Island resort in the Bahamas for their family vacation, Michael announces that all he wants to do is get some rest and relaxation-by himself. But no sooner does he settle into his lounge chair for some peace and quiet than his talkative and annoying golf buddy, Jimmy, shows up and insists that they spend time together. Michael is relieved to find a way out when Jay invites him to the isolated Magic Island so they can have some romantic fun. As their day winds down and it's time to leave, the boat never shows up to take them back and the couple find themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere.

To the outside world, the Bahamas are an idyllic holiday hotspot, but for its residents, a surge in violent crime is turning these islands into one of the most dangerous places in the Caribbean.
Type 'Bahamas' into Google and it throws up pictures of beautiful beaches and luxury resorts. But there's another side to this holiday haven. Easy access to weapons from the United States along with the country's weak laws has brought a rise in violent drug and gun crime. "I don't see my country the same way I saw it 10 years ago. We sell it as a paradise. That's a sales pitch", says Jerome Sawyer, a well-known TV reporter. With elections coming up, the Bahamas government has to decide whether it supports popular public demands for capital punishment, or comply with the United Nations' demands for an end to state executions. With its economy almost entirely reliant on tourism, any worsening of the crisis could prove catastrophic. "If you drive through the communities, all the homes are barricaded. That's the fear that people live in."

HECTOMETER - World Record
This is the visual poem of William Trubridge's world record freedive to 100 meters (one hectometer, basically one football field length and back) in order to bring light to the plight of the world's smallest cetacean, the Hector's Dolphin of New Zealand. With one breath of air and diving without weights, fins or any propulsive assistance, William descended to 101 meters in the waters of Dean's Blue Hole, Bahamas, the deepest blue hole in the world.
This short documentary of the record attempts to transmit what it is like to freedive deep beneath the surface, and how we can return to explore our potential as an aquatic mammal in the search to help our endangered cousins of the seas.

The HECTOMETER freedive
William Trubridge becomes the first human being to dive completely unassisted to 100 meters (one hectometer).
With a single breath of air, and only his hands and feet for propulsion, he set this historic world record in Dean's Blue Hole, Long Island, Bahamas, on December 13, 2010.
Directed by Matthew Brown http://www.vimeo.com/matthewbrown/videos. Music by Hans Zimmer.
The names listed during the descent were the supporters who each purchased a meter of the 100m rope.
For more information on William Trubridge, freediving and courses, visit http://www.verticalblue.net
The dive was done to raise awareness of the plight of the Hector's Dolphin. There are now only 100 remaining North Island (Maui) Hector's Dolphins - one of the smallest and most beautiful species of dolphin in the world. Hector's Dolphins are found only in New Zealand, and only in shallow coastal waters, less than 100 meters deep, putting them at the mercy of gill-net fishing that takes place in those waters. Their population has been reduced by 75% in the last 30 years, and the Maui Dolphin subspecies is teetering on the verge of extinction.

Bahamas is better known amongst his friends and family as Afie Jurvanen and before embarking on a beautiful solo career, he provided sublime guitar support for Feist on her albums and tours. Now with his second solo album released (titled Barchords), he's touring North America, Europe and beyond with his band - including two wonderfully talented backing vocalists in this session.
We caught up with them whilst they were in London in a very old church near Kings Cross and they performed some seriously lovely songs, including Lost In The Light and Overjoyed.

This video is about the island of Eleuthera and Harbour Island. It is our intent to show a glimpse of our two hosts (Kevin Oestenstad and Jennifer Fox) discovering the Out Islands of the REAL Bahamas for the first time. Join them on their journey to discover truly authentic Bahamian destination experiences in Eleuthera.
http://www.myoutislands.com. They get off the beaten path and SEEK what historical, natural, and cultural wonders these beautiful islands in the Bahamas offers to visitors. What they found in Eleuthera and Harbour Island completely changed their perspective of what they thought about the Bahamas. The Out Islands is not a place for everyone, so if you are looking for touristy resorts, crowded beaches, casinos and cruise stops, or marine life behind aquarium glass, don't come to the Out Islands. More importantly, our hosts found themselves. These tranquil islands of the Bahamas also allows you to RECONNECT to yourself and your loved ones.
