The French President says EU leaders must lift an arms embargo which prevents the supply of weapons to Syrian rebel fighters.French president Francois Hollande has called on Europe to lift a Syrian arms embargo to help rebels fighting Bashar al Assad's regime. The ban, which was extended on February 28 for three months, prevents weapons being supplied to the opposition. Ahead of a two-day EU summit, President Hollande said: "We are ready to support the rebellion, so we are ready to go this far. We must take our responsibilities. "We cannot allow people to be massacred by a regime that for now does not want a political transition." Earlier this month Foreign Secretary William Hague said British support for the opposition had entered a "new phase", allowing rebels to receive new equipment including armoured vehicles and protective clothing. President Hollande met Prime Minister David Cameron for talks on Syria before the EU summit, which begins on Friday. France and Britain are expected to press for new EU talks on the embargo, although the issue is not on the agenda for the Brussels summit. Foreign ministers have agreed to ease the embargo to allow any EU country to provide non-lethal aid or training to opposition fighters. AFP said President Hollande claimed countries including Russia were providing arms to President Assad's regime. He said France "must convince its European partners" to tip the balance by ending the embargo. سوريا حظر الأسلحة: فرنسا تريد رفع الحظر Embargo de armas a Siria: Francia quiere Ban Lifted Síria embargo de armas: França quer Ban Lifted سوریه تحریم های تسلیحاتی: فرانسه می خواهد به بان کی مون برداشته Siria embargo sulle armi: la Francia vuole Ban Lifted 敘利亞的武器禁運,法國希望禁令被取消 シリア武器禁輸:フランスはBanを撤廃ウォンツ

Telegraph correspondent Tom Phillips reports on China's latest health scandal from the foul smelling banks of the Huangpu river in Shanghai where over 3,000 dead pigs have been pulled from the water. Authorities have been pulling out the swollen and rotting pigs, some with their internal organs visible, since Friday - and revolting images of the carcasses in news reports and online blogs have raised public anger against local officials. The surge in the dumping of dead pigs upstream from Shanghai has followed a police campaign to curb the illicit trade in sick pig parts. The effort to keep infected pork off dinner tables may instead be fueling new health fears, as Shanghai residents and local media fret over the possibility of contamination to the city's water supply, although authorities say no contamination has been detected. The curtains open and Pope Francis I, formerly Archbishop Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, appears on the balcony of St Peter's clad in white. Pope Francis delivered his first blessing to a huge crowd in St Peter's Square on Wednesday night, asking for the prayers of "all men and women of good will" to help him lead the Catholic Church. Francis, speaking Italian with a slight Latin American accent, joked with the crowd before delivering his blessing, saying: "As you know the duty of the conclave is to give Rome a bishop. It seems that my brother cardinals went almost to the end of the world." The breakthrough came after the second vote on the second day of the gathering of the cardinals in Rome, and white plumes of smoke were issued from the Sistine Chapel's chimney in front of 100,000 cheering faithful, who were patiently waiting under beating rain.
