Dholes - Wild Dogs Kill Tigers & Leopards
The Dhole (Cuon alpines) is a fairly small member of the canine family, weighing in at 20-45 lbs. Though diminutive on an individual scale, as a pack, they can be ferocious enemies. Throughout history, dholes have reflected their tenacity in fearless contest against prey, leopards, and even tigers. Some people do not believe this is possible, but according to Arcane, a big cat enthusiast, what many westerner's doubt as truth, it is a well known fact in India. She provided a list of literature that has, throughout the ages, cited the relentless reputation of the dhole in dispute with leopards, tigers, and even bears.
"The wild dogs of India go under the name of Buansa, Dhole, and Kolsun, are found in Nepal, the Nilgiris, Coromandel, the Dekkan, etc...They kill tigers and cheetahs, and the remains of hogs and deer are to be found in their path." Anecdotes of the Habits and Instinct of Animals - 2007
"Dhole will kill tigers and bears that compete with them for kills." - The Welfare of Dogs - 2006.
"Schaller (1967) reports that packs of dholes are capable of driving a tiger (panthera tigris), 10 times their size, from kills." The Biology and Conservation of Wild Canids 2004
"One fear is about the dhole is that a high density population can supress tiger and leopard populations" On Jim Corbett's trail and Other Tales from Tree-tops - 2004
"Tigers and leopards take flight after a clash with a pack of dholes, perhaps over the ownership of a kill, and they are frequently forced to take to trees. If caught, the pack can overwhelm and kill individual big cats." International Wildlife Encyclopedia - 2001
"Dholes hunt various Mammals, generally associating in packs of up to 30 individuals; they usually hunt prey such as deer and wild sheep but are reported to attack animals as large as tigers and bears." Students Britannica India - 2000
"The dhole, or red dog, is the most dreaded by the natives, and many are the stories they tell of its ferocity and determination. They say it will even attack a tiger and drive it off its kill." Sport and Adventure in the Indian Jungle - 1904
"And even the Tiger will snarlingly relinquish his kill to the dhole." The Monist - 1898
"There is a persistent tradition that the dhole hunt and kill the tiger. The general belief of the wild tribes of India is borne out by two stories told by Colonel Baldwin of their attacking the bear and the tiger, which put the fact beyond doubt. A bear was found by an English officer standing at bay before the dogs. He had killed one, but his hide and body were torn in strips by the bites of the pack. In the other case, the fresh bones of a tiger were found, from which the flesh had been eaten; one paw still remained whole, and close by lay the freshly killed bodies of three wild dogs which had fallen in the night." Animals At Work And Play - 1897
"They are said to be quite fearless toward all other denizens of the jungle and do not hesitate to attack tigers, wild-boars, or leopards. A pack of dholes are said to be equal to the task of killing even the royal-Bengal-tiger, and the natives will tell you that fierce battles between the two are waged daily in the depths of the jungle, and that the dholes are always victorious. The natives believe, in fact, that the dholes enjoy fighting tigers better than anything else, and they are always on the warp-path after these striped monsters, and that they hunt down weaker game only to satisfy their hunger." St. Nicholas, Some Asiatic Dogs - 1890
"The panther, the wild bull, the tiger...fall an easy prey before a pack of wild dogs. The natives asser that they kill tigers and cheetahs (these cats once roamed Asia) and there is no doubt of the fact." Dogs - 1874
"But the Dhole is apparently the only animal that, although individually so far the inferior of its fierce prey, in size, strength, and activity, his sufficient confidence in its united powers, to chase and kill the terrible tiger." Woods Animal Kingdom - 1870
"Not withstanding the immense power and activity of tigers, it is asserted that not even the largest can hold out against the dholes." Sporting Magazine - 1808
Arcane finds it important to note that Tigers will harm dholes as well, taking their young, charging drifters, or killing loners whenever feasibly possible. If desperate, or confident in the presence of a small pack, a tiger may even force dholes from their kill.

Wild Dog or Dhole (Cuon alpinus) Chassing Deer by Shirishkumar Patil.mpg
The dhole (Cuon alpinus) is a species of canid native to South and Southeast Asia. It is the only extant member of the genus Cuon, which differs from Canis by the reduced number of molars and greater number of teats. The dholes are classed as endangered by the IUCN, due to ongoing habitat loss, depletion of its prey base, competition from other predators, persecution and possibly diseases from domestic and feral dogs. The dhole is a highly social animal, living in large clans which occasionally split up into small packs to hunt. It primarily preys on medium-sized ungulates, which it hunts by tiring them out in long chases, and kills by disemboweling them. Unlike most social canids (but similar to African wild dogs), dholes let their pups eat first at a kill.Though fearful of humans, dhole packs are bold enough to attack large and dangerous animals such as wild boar, water buffalo, and even tigers.

Rabindranath Tagore (Bengali: রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর, Robindronath Ţhakur) was a Bengali poet, novelist, musician, painter and playwright who reshaped Bengali literature and music. As author of Gitanjali and its "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse",he was the first non-European who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. His poetry in translation was viewed as spiritual, and this together with his mesmerizing persona gave him a prophet-like aura in the west.

Amazing wild dogs - The Dhole
The dhole or Asiatic Wild Dog* (Cuon alpinus) is about the size of a border collie (12-18 kg), but looks quite different. The coat is usually a rusty red colour, but varies regionally from sandy yellow to dark grey. Watch this dog video. 3
Within the canid family the dhole is something of an enigma. It doesn't fit neatly into any of the sub-families (i.e. the foxes or wolf-like dogs) and is classified in a genus of its own - Cuon. Among its unusual features is a strange whistle call which it uses to re-assemble the pack when animals become separated in dense forest. The dhole also has more teets than most other dogs and has a shorter jaw with one less molar on each side of its lower jaw.
The dhole* is a highly social and cooperative animal, living in organised packs of around 10 individuals. Groups often contain more males than females, with usually just one breeding female. Occasionally, large groups of over 40 dogs have been seen, possibly arising from the temporary fusion of neighbouring packs.
Together with the grey wolf, African hunting dog and Amazonian bush dog, the dhole is one of the few dogs that regularly hunts in packs. This requires intelligence, co-ordination, and sometimes courage! In India, one of the dhole's favourite prey is the medium-sized Axis deer. On occasions, however, it will tackle even larger prey like the banteng (a large bovid), and highly aggressive prey like the wild boar, + lions, tigers, leopards, asiatic black bears, cheetah, water buffalo, deer, striped hyena, asian elephant, raccoon dog, giant panda, hog badger, golden jackal, wolf, golden langur,vs ,boa, lynx, mongoose, cats, hawks, eagles, egrets, caracal, ocelot, dingo, black panther, fennec, crocodile, shark, penguins, zebra, rhino, snake, python, polar bear, giraffe, hippo, orca, tarantula, komodo dragon, black mamba, piranha, human, wolverine, and attack in groups! With such dangerous quarry, the dogs can literally risk their lives to secure the food they need to survive. Communal hunting is particularly important during the breeding season when pack members return to the den to regurgitate food for the mother and pups. Sometimes, however, dholes prefer to hunt individually or in pairs, focusing on smaller prey such as hares.
The dhole normally lives in tropical rain forest habitats, but can also eke out an existence in the open steppes of Kashmir and Siberia. As the Latin name, Cuon alpinus suggests, the dhole is often found in hilly or mountainous regions, reflects this great adaptability, extending from India to Russia, and down through China to Malaysia and Indonesia (Java being the southern limit). In recent decades, however, there has been massive habitat loss within this region. Today, very little is known about the dhole's distribution, but restricted surveys indicate serious decline and fragmentation of the former range. The best remaining populations are probably to be found in central and southern India, but even their stability is in question because is an endangered species!!

For people who might be interested in how this film was made I wrote a brief explanation below:
This independent short-documentary was a personal one-man crew / zero-budget experiment in wich I tried to explore the possibilities of creating a film without any crew or external funding, all this in order provided complete independence and a maximum in creative freedom. I managed to do so for 90 percent of the film and had some help from friends on one or two occasions.
After researching and pre-producing the film it was finally shot on different camera's like an XD-Cam PDW 530, Sony EX3 and a Canon 5D markII provided by my employer or rented using personal funds. My main goal in the cinematographic part of the film was to explore new point of views and camera handling wich resulted in different "feels" throughout the scenes in the film. I used a Cineslider for the grip parts and a monopod to stabilize the Canon 5D MarkII instead of an (expensive) rig. The sound was captured on a TASCAM DR-100 witch I positioned strategically amongst the musicians using a small tripod. The sound was synced later on in AVID Media Composer using PluralEyes. Colorgrading was done using Red Giant's Magic Bullet plugin. The overall production costs are estimated to have been 500 euro's or less (This of course excluding the investments made in gear and software). Production time took nine months in total, from scratch idea to a subtitled online version.
Hope this can be of any help for people wanting to make a film on a shoestring!
