Charles Anthon (November 19, 1797, New York City – July 29, 1867) was an American classical scholar.

Life[link]

His father, George Christian Anthon, was a German physician who served in the British Army during the American Revolution until the surrender of Detroit in 1788. He attained the rank of surgeon general, resigned, married the daughter of a French officer, and settled in New York City.^[1] The son, after graduating with honors at Columbia College in 1815, began the study of law, and in 1819 was admitted to the bar, but never practiced. In 1820 he was appointed assistant professor of Greek and Latin in his old college, full professor ten years later, and at the same time headmaster of the grammar school attached to the college, which post he held until 1864.

He produced, for use in colleges and schools, a large number of classical works, which enjoyed great popularity, although his editions of classical authors were by no means in favor with schoolmasters, owing to the large amount of assistance, especially translations, contained in the notes. He also wrote A Manual of Greek Literature from the Earliest Authentic Periods to the Close of Byzantine Era providing a list of all Greek writers in that period, with a summary of their life and works and a bibliography of editions then in use. The overview is still useful today, but outdated. His intention to provide a similar volume for Latin Literature was never fulfilled.

Dr. Anthon's work was carried on by his successor, Henry Drisler.

Anthon Transcript[link]

Charles Anthon is famous among members of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also known as Mormons) because of his interactions with Martin Harris concerning a fragment of Joseph Smith's translation of the Book of Mormon. The fragment was later known as the Anthon Transcript. According to Harris, Anthon wrote Harris a letter of authenticity declaring the fragment to contain true Egyptian characters. Anthon was also reported to have confirmed the translation of these characters as correct. When informed that an angel of God had revealed the characters to Joseph Smith, Anthon tore up the authentication. Anthon later claimed that he recognized a hoax and never wrote a letter of authenticity.

Acquaintance with Poe[link]

Dr. Anthon was a friend and correspondent of Edgar Allan Poe, who attempted to use the acquaintance with him to gain a national reputation in literature and journalism as well as publication in 1845 of Poe's collected stories through Harper and Brothers. This was, however, unsuccessful due to an accusation of plagiarism against Poe.

Anthony Perkins (April 4, 1932 – September 12, 1992) was an American actor. Perkins was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his second film, Friendly Persuasion. He is best known for playing Norman Bates in the Psycho films. His other films include The Trial, Fear Strikes Out, Tall Story, Pretty Poison, and The Black Hole.

Early life[link]

Perkins was born in New York City, the son of Janet Esselstyn (née Rane) and stage and film actor Osgood Perkins. Anthony was five when his father died.^[1] He is a descendant of a Mayflower passenger, John Howland. He attended The Brooks School, The Browne & Nichols School, Columbia University and Rollins College, having moved to Boston in 1942.^[2]

Career[link]

Perkins made his film debut in The Actress (1953). He received the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year – Actor and an Academy Award nomination for his second film, Friendly Persuasion (1956). The tall (6'2") Perkins also portrayed the troubled former Boston Red Sox baseball player Jimmy Piersall in the 1957 true story Fear Strikes Out.

Following this, he released three pop music albums in 1957 and 1958 on Epic and RCA as "Tony Perkins".^[3] His single "Moon-Light Swim" was a hit in the United States, peaking at #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1957.^[4] He starred with Shirley Booth and Shirley MacLaine in the film The Matchmaker (1958).

Perkins also acted in theater. In 1958, he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in Look Homeward, Angel on Broadway. During this time he also co-starred in Desire Under the Elms (1958) with Sophia Loren, and played a basketball star in the romantic comedy Tall Story (1960) opposite Jane Fonda.

Perkins was cast as Norman Bates in the Alfred Hitchcock-directed film Psycho (1960). The film was a critical and commercial success, and gained Perkins international fame for his performance as the homicidal owner of the Bates Motel. Perkins' performance would garner him the Best Actor Award from the International Board of Motion Picture Reviewers. In 1961, Perkins would receive considerable critical acclaim for his performance in the film Goodbye Again, opposite Ingrid Bergman, a performance which won him the Best Actor Award at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival.

After that came a successful career in Europe, including the role of Joseph K. in Orson Welles' 1962 adaptation of Kafka's The Trial (both 1962). Upon returning to America, he took the role of a disturbed young murderer in Pretty Poison (1968) opposite Tuesday Weld. He also played Chaplain Tappman in Catch-22 (1970).

Perkins co-wrote, with composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, the screenplay for the 1973 film The Last of Sheila, for which they received a 1974 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Motion Picture Screenplay.

In 1974, Perkins played the lead role in the romantic drama Lovin' Molly with Blythe Danner and Susan Sarandon. In 1972, he appeared in The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, and was one of the many stars featured in the 1974 hit Murder on the Orient Express. Perkins also hosted television's Saturday Night Live in 1976 and was featured in his only science fiction film, the box office-smash and space opus, Walt Disney's The Black Hole, in 1979.

His Broadway credits also included the 1967 Neil Simon comedy The Star-Spangled Girl, the Frank Loesser musical Greenwillow (1960), for which he was nominated for another Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical and Bernard Slade's 1979 play Romantic Comedy opposite Mia Farrow.

Perkins reprised the role of Norman Bates in three sequels to Psycho. The first, Psycho II (1983), was a box office success more than 20 years after the original film. He then starred in and directed Psycho III (for which he was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Actor) in 1986, but refused to reprise his role as Bates in the failed television pilot Bates Motel, famously boycotting the project in a very ardent, and well-received, oppositional public campaign. He did play Bates in the following made-for-cable Psycho IV: The Beginning in 1990, over which he had much creative control although he was turned down for director. Anthony directed a film in 1988 called Lucky Stiff.

Perkins starred in the sitcom pilot, The Ghost Writer, which blended horror and fantasy elements Perkins is known for. The show was created by Alan Spencer and was unaired but praised for its dark humor and Perkins' rare foray into comedy.

Films in which Perkins appeared in which his character had much resonance with Norman Bates include Ken Russell's Crimes of Passion (1984) with Kathleen Turner, and the Hungarian-produced Jekyll-Hyde remake Edge of Sanity and Daughter of Darkness.

Perkins has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, an honor he received for his influential and exceptional contributions to the motion picture industry. It is located at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California.

In 1991, Perkins was honored with the Donostia Lifetime Achievement Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival.

Although he was fighting AIDS, the actor appeared in eight television productions between 1990 and 1992, including Daughter of Darkness (1990) with Mia Sara and The Naked Target (1992) with Roddy McDowall. He made his final appearance in In Deep Woods (1992) with Rosanna Arquette.

Perkins had agreed to provide the voice for the role of the dentist, Dr. Wolfe, in The Simpsons episode "Last Exit to Springfield" after Anthony Hopkins and Clint Eastwood both turned the role down,^[5] but he died before the role could be recorded. In the end, the role went to Simpsons regular Hank Azaria.^[5]

Personal life[link]

On August 9, 1973, Perkins married photographer Berinthia "Berry" Berenson. They had two sons: actor Oz Perkins (b. February 2, 1974), and musician Elvis Perkins (b. February 9, 1976).

He once said he felt too nervous around women, and resisted actresses Jane Fonda and Brigitte Bardot, who had tried to seduce him during his youth. He was a very shy actor, especially in women's company.^[6] According to an unauthorized biography by Charles Winecoff, he had affairs with Chris Makos, actor Tab Hunter, dancer Rudolf Nureyev, composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim and dancer-choreographer Grover Dale prior to marrying Berenson.^[7] He had his first intimate heterosexual experience at the age of 39 while working on the 1972 film The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean with an actress who also appeared in the film. Perkins declined to identify the actress, but "other sources" have identified her as Victoria Principal; Principal herself confirmed this in a People magazine article about Perkins.^[6]

Death[link]

Perkins died on September 12, 1992, from complications of AIDS.^[8] He was cremated, and his ashes were given to his family. His widow, Berry Berenson, was killed on American Airlines Flight 11 during the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.^[9]

Anthony Geary (born May 29, 1947) is an American actor. He has starred on the ABC daytime drama General Hospital as Luke Spencer from 1978 to 1984 and from 1993 to present.

Life and career[link]

Geary was born in Coalville, Utah, the son of a homemaker and a contractor.^[1]

His character in General Hospital began as a "hit man" and later as a rapist who fell in love and subsequently married his victim, Laura Webber (played by Genie Francis). The character became so popular that the writers turned Luke into a protagonist.^[2] Luke and Laura's November 17, 1981 wedding began what was arguably the greatest love affair in the history of General Hospital, if not daytime television. The early 1980s saw Luke Spencer in a series of nearly improbable storylines seemingly lifted from the pages of a spy novel, which only served to further the character's popularity.

He also portrayed Luke's lookalike cousin Bill Eckert on General Hospital from 1991 to 1993.

He has won the Daytime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series" for General Hospital six times, a record for male actors and tying with Erika Slezak and Justin Deas for the most Daytime Emmy wins by an actor.

A notable exception from his series of dramatic roles is the part of a scientist/studio engineer in the comedy/spoof movie UHF. He also starred in 1987's Disorderlies with rappers The Fat Boys.

In 1971, Geary guest-starred on an early episode of All in the Family with fellow future soap star Phil Carey.

Geary has a winter and summer vacation from General Hospital.

In 1994, he appeared in an episode of "Roseanne", alongside with his co-star Genie Francis.

Miguel Sánchez (1594–1674) was a Novohispanic priest, writer and theologian. He is most renowned as the author of the 1648 publication Imagen de la Virgen María, a description and theological interpretation of an apparition to Juan Diego of the Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Guadalupe which is the first published narrative of the event. The precise nature of the cult before that date and whether the tradition as to the apparition dates back to 1531 (as Sánchez claims), constitute a vexed historical problem. The existence of a cult of the Virgin Mary at a chapel (or ermita) at Tepeyac, focussed on a painted cult image of the Virgin and enjoying a reputation for miraculous healing, was certainly established by 1556.^[1] Professor Brading, a scholar of Mexican history, noted of Sánchez: "even if he did not initiate the devotion, he determined the manner in which the image was exalted and justified."^[2]

Sánchez was born in New Spain (today's Mexico) and studied at the Royal and Pontifical University in Mexico City. He sought teaching positions but did not get them. On various occasions he served as chaplain of the chapel of Our Lady of Los Remedios, and in 1662 he joined an archconfraternity of secular priests which was later constituted as the first Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in Mexico.^[3]

His work makes use of the typology of Augustine of Hippo, although applying it not to events in the New Testament but rather to events alleged to have occurred the previous century in Mexico.

He was buried at the sanctuary of the Virgin at Guadalupe, having been her lifelong devotee and the first of the "four evangelists" of the Guadalupan apparition.^[4]

Gregory Carlton Anthony (born November 15, 1967 in Las Vegas, Nevada) is an American former National Basketball Association (NBA) basketball player and former personality on the ESPN family of networks. He is currently an analyst for NBA TV and CBS's college basketball coverage. Anthony also contributes to Yahoo! Sports as a college basketball analyst.

Early life[link]

Growing up, Anthony aspired to enter politics. He wanted to become Nevada's first African American Senator.^[1] A graduate of Rancho High School in North Las Vegas, Nevada, Anthony played his freshman year of college basketball for the University of Portland where he was the WCC Freshman of the Year before transferring to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In his junior season with UNLV, the Runnin' Rebels won the 1990 NCAA Championship game over Duke with Anthony starting at point guard. He played almost the entire season with a broken jaw. He was a three-time All Big West performer and 3rd Team All America his senior season. This talented team was coached by Jerry Tarkanian and also included future NBA players Stacey Augmon and Larry Johnson.

NBA career[link]

Anthony was drafted by the New York Knicks in the first round of the 1991 NBA Draft, with the reputation of being a poor outside shooter but an excellent defender. He served as a point guard and defensive specialist, and typified the hard-nosed defensive reputation of Pat Riley's Knicks.

In 1995, Anthony was picked up in the expansion draft the 2nd pick (1st overall by the Grizzlies) by the Vancouver Grizzlies, where he was the full-time starter at point guard for two seasons. After a journeyman career, in which he played mostly off the bench for Seattle, Portland, Chicago and Milwaukee, he retired in 2002.

Broadcasting career[link]

Upon retirement, Anthony joined ESPN as an analyst for both NBA coverage on ESPN and ABC. He has been politically active with the Republican Party since his days at UNLV, where he graduated with a degree in political science and served as the vice chairman of Nevada's Young Republicans.^[1] However, he did appear on the October 28, 2008 episode of the Michael Baisden Show, during which he publicly endorsed 2008 Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama [1].

On December 13, 2008, Anthony made his debut as a college basketball analyst for CBS Sports, replacing Clark Kellogg, who was promoted to lead commentator.[2]
